12.01.2022 THE NEWS WE'VE WANTED TO SHARE IS HERE! Our series will proceed this summer. After much discussion with government, clubs, associations, sponsors, athletes and other stakeholders, we're excited to announce we've got a series this summer. It will look different, with no Latrobe or Devonport. But we are adding a running only meet in Penguin, bringing George Town cycling carnival into the series and putting Hobart on December 27. 07.01.2022 LATROBE CARNIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Latrobe Bicycle Race Club (LBRC) announced today that the 123 year old Latrobe Carnival will be cancelled in 2020. The committee indicated it is only a cancellation for one year due to the impact of COVID-19. President of the Sports Carnivals Association of Tasmania (SCAT), Mike Gunson, said that while the decision is heavily disappointing, that the future for the series remains optimistic.... "SCAT notes this development and understands the reasons as to why the LBRC have made this decision. However SCAT is still moving ahead and preparing for an exciting and entertaining carnivals over the Christmas and New Year period," Gunson said. COVID-19 has claimed many major sporting events around the world in 2020 and the impacts have been felt across many Tasmanian communities. Gunson confirmed that the other major carnivals in the series are progressing with plans to conduct their carnivals in the 20/21 summer, working with local authorities to ensure the events are delivered within the new 'norms' of COVID-19 evening planning. "While it will be a challenge to attract international cyclists, runners and woodchoppers, SCAT is in negotiations with a variety of parties to ensure this can occur. SCAT is also very hopeful that the borders within Australia will be open by December this year to allow for the normal movement of so many mainland competitors to attend the carnivals. "SCAT will be working with all the clubs and sports to ensure all COVID-19 Return to Sport protocols are delivered in the appropriate manner and will be supporting clubs in the coming months to adapt accordingly. "We remain confident of hosting another exciting series of the Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals this summer," Gunson said.
