24.01.2022 DRAGON 90TH ANNIVERSARY REGATTA POWERED BY PAUL&SHARK: day 1 Vento forte e mare formato, tutti a terra a godersi il villaggio 7 ottobre - Un sole splendente, m...a con un vento troppo intenso e ballerino e una fastidiosa onda incrociata, hanno caratterizzato la giornata di apertura della Dragon 90th Anniversary Regatta powered by Paul&Shark, l’evento che celebra i novant’anni della barca che ha fatto la storia della vela mondiale. La giornata si era aperta con il briefing degli equipaggi nel race village antistante lo Yacht Club Sanremo. Malgrado le belle condizioni di sole e di caldo, l’intensità del vento ha fatto decidere per un posticipo prima e per un annullamento poco dopo le ore 14, soprattutto per il vento instabile di direzione e lo stato del mare confuso. Tutto rimandato quindi a domani con il primo segnale preparatorio previsto per le ore 11.30, quando gli organizzatori si augurano di poter far disputare almeno due prove. Una situazione che ha comunque dato modo ai velisti di godersi il villaggio regata, di incontrare equipaggi provenienti dai quattro angoli del globo, alcuni da paesi molto lontani dall’Italia per tradizione e cultura, ma accomunati dalla grande passione per il Dragone. Come Lowell Chang del Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, una delle persone che più hanno contribuito allo sviluppo della classe in quella parte del mondo, e presente a Sanremo con il suo Phyloong con numero velico Hong Kong 50. Siamo qui perché non potevamo perderci questa occasione! Vogliamo sostenere la classe. E’ una barca su cui ho navigato fin dai primi anni 70, mi piace l’atmosfera di amicizia e cameratismo. La classe di Hong Kong sta continuando a crescere, con sempre nuove barche, quindi siamo felici di essere qui. Naturalmente c’è anche molta competizione ma anche molta sportività. Da molto lontano vengono anche gli statunitensi di Mars USA 325, Paul Lajos, Gordon Stephens e Clint Webb. Veniamo da diversi stati, io vengo dal Tennesse, Gordon dalla Florida e Paul dalla Pennsilvanya. Ha spiegato il giovane timoniere Clint Webb. L’equipaggio a stelle e strisce ha una storia interessante, come spiega Gordon Stephens: Ho regatato con il padre di Paul per oltre quarant’anni sul Dragone, sfortunatamente è mancato qualche anno ga e quindi abbiamo deciso di continuare questa tradizione. Paul mi ha chiamato in gennaio dicendo di essere certo che suo padre avrebbe voluto che noi partecipassimo a questo evento, ed eccoci qui. Secondo Paul Lajos: Il Dragone è una barca bella, facile da portare, molto stabile, richiede solo tre persone di equipaggio e ci sono velisti fra i migliori del mondo. Ci navigo da oltre trent’anni ed è incredibile vedere il mix di età di velisti e skipper. Sono barche spettacolari che tengono tanto vento. Il primo giorno della Dragon 90th Anniversary Regatta powered by Paul&Shark si è chiuso con un party, cui hanno preso parte circa 600 persone, offerto dal Saint Petersburg Yacht Club & Friends, con apprezzate specialità della cucina russa: vodka, caviale e blinis. La manifestazione gode del supporto, oltre che degli enti e partner istituzionali dello Yacht Club Sanremo, anche dello sponsor principale Paul&Shark e di Brugge Zot, Glenfiddich, Yanmar, OneSquare, Amer Yachts. 20.01.2022 Another beaut sailing day on the Derwent in the 2020 Prince Philip Cup for International Dragons. A reasonably consistent sou-easter blew in at about 13 knots, with some right hand swings and a few extra puffs occasionally. Heat One went to multiple Cup winner Karabos IX; with Ray Chatfield sailing Aquila, some might say surprisingly well, up the right-hand side of the course into a solid second spot with West Australian Sandy Anderson bringing Riga home in third place. Nic...k Rogers and Sandy repeated their efforts in the second race of the day, with Derwent River helm Justin Barr grabbing second spot in the blue hulled Magic. Overall, Nick Rogers with Leigh Behrens and Ollie Burnell have sailed the Ridgeway built Karabos IX to a perfect start, with Riga second from Magic and the Dragon yacht named Ridgeway fourth. Racing continues on Wednesday with Heats 3 & 4 starting from 1 pm. See more

03.01.2022 Laser sailor’s first-up winner in Dragons Teenage Laser sailor Max Gluskie added a new dimension to Hobart’s fleet of International Dragon class yachts today wh...en he steered Ridgeway to victory in race six of the Derwent Sailing Squadron’s Winter Solstice Championship on the Derwent. It was his first regatta in the classic one-design keelboats, a class in which the winning helmsmen have generally had years of experience steering the boats. Certainly, the first win in a Dragon by a teenage helmsman in recent years and coincidently Max was steering the Dragon owned by Steven Shield, the youngest Tasmanian to win the Prince Philip Cup. Max won race six by just two seconds, sailing impressively in the final four races of the shortened regatta, placing 3-4-1-3. However, earlier back-of-the-fleet results saw Ridgeway finished fifth overall. Tasmanian champion and current World Corinthian champion Nick Rogers, steering Karabos IX, won the inaugural Innovative Electrical Winter Solstice Champion from Magic (Justin Barr) and Xanthos (Michael Wilkinson). Dying winds limited racing for the Dragons to just two of the scheduled five races on Saturday with Karabos (Nick Rogers) and Xanthos (Michael Wilkinson) each having a first and a third. Today, DSS race officers set out to get in as many races as possible, managing four short windward/leeward races which saw just seconds separating the leading boats. If there is such a phenonium as a perfect winter race day, then today would have to be included, with sunny skies, a light katabatic northerly breeze and superb racing, commented DSS sailing operations manager Peter Watson. Karabos IX set the pace today, winning the first two races, but finished second in race five, followed by two fourth places. Magic, with Justin Barr back on the helm, won the fifth and seventh races to finish second with a net 17 points on a countback from Xanthos.
