23.01.2022 **** TOO MUCH, TOO YOUNG *** Whilst all horse owners aim to do the best by their horses I have to take a minute to bring up a topic that seems to be a recurring... theme in my line of work. All too often I will see the results of a horse that has been pushed too hard too young. I often find some majorly ingrained problems such as lumbo-sacral arthritis, hock arthritis, cervical spine issues and depressed sacrums to name but a few. A lot of the time these horses have put up and put up for quite a while. Unfortunately, most people are not fully in tune with their horse and miss the signs. Often mistaking pain responses for naughtiness. It's not until they can't cope that the problem is noticed. At this point it can be quite hard to pull them back. Now I must be clear here. Not all problems I encounter are due to too much too young nor are they as a result of the current owner. Often they are the results of previous owners and situations. Obviously there can be freak accidents and incidents that can result in these issues. Also, you can have congenital problems and conformational issues for which you can do little to affect. However, that being said there are plenty of things that owners can do to reduce risk of the issues occurring. The first is to get a knowledgeable horse person to back your horse if you are not sure. Try to find someone that has a good reputation and works using natural horsemanship techniques for example. They should be able to listen to the horse and make the process well rounded and easy on the horse. The second is that once backed, do not push young horses!! It is a fine balance but if you're not careful you could wreck your horse from the start. Backing a horse at 3-5 years old is ok BUT ridden work must not be hurried into. This is the case even if you think your horse is mature for its age. Anatomically the horse may not be fully developed until it's 6-9 years or older depending on the breed. In a lot of cases this could mean 4-5 years of ridden work on an immature skeleton. (Take a look at the picture below). This causes lots and lots of hidden damage. The other big problem that is linked to this is repetitive strains that can affect major joints not just tendons and ligaments. Pushing the body to perform strenuous moves too frequently can obviously put undue strain on joints and result in injury or damage that the horse will carry with them. Often they can cope with a few for a while but they can build up until the horse simply can't cope. So, before I stumble into a full on rant, I'd like to say: 1) Back them gently 2) Take it steady and let them mature 3) Listen to them. ("Naughty" often = Pain) 4) If in doubt, stop and get them checked out. It's far better to take it steady and get your horse checked regularly than to try to push through major problems!

23.01.2022 Equine Sports Massage Therapy- After much consideration I am back available for appointments, whilst still adhering to the current social distance and hygiene regulations. If you’d like to book an appointment I just ask that only one person is present, that we keep 1.5m apart at all times, and that there is water available to wash hands.... Now is the perfect time to get your horses muscle health back on track ready for the season when it starts... Send me a message to book See you soon!

22.01.2022 Feet, Let's talk feet... in particular horses feet. How important do you rate them in your day to day horse husbandry? How often do you get them done? How of...ten do you evaluate them with your trimmer/farrier? How often does your trimmer/farrier watch them walk out and look at the foot falls and discuss the changes they have found? To me feet are one of the most important parts of my job, if the hoof isn't balanced then the rest of the horse isn't going too be much better. I have my own horses feet religiously booked in every 6 weeks, missing an appointment would never be an option. my trimmer assesses them every time and we discuss the changes and angles, I know the importance of a balanced trim and how it affects the horse above, I feel it every day I work on a horse. Try walking your self with one high heel and a thong on the other foot, I sure as hell reckon you'd get pretty over it quick, your balance would be off, you would trip and stumble and your back would start to ache. Then why oh why do we leave our beloved horses a few more weeks then we should, not care or notice what the poor farrier/trimmer is doing, not glance at the changes that are happening.. Please for the love of your horse assess your horses feet whether it be a broodmare, riding horse, cart horse, paddock mate they all matter. Oh and appreciate your farrier/trimmer, I know I sure do!

02.01.2022 Lunch time views

02.01.2022 Now that I’ve been back treating horses again for the last few months, I have noticed a crucial factor in checking your horses muscle strength and fitness, if you haven’t been riding much due to lock down or have been doing mainly different types of riding (trail riding only) and suddenly are heading out to your lessons/clinics and notice your muscles are aching after doing that hour flat lesson you’ve booked in, then spare a thought for your horses muscles... Not only will... your horse have lost cardiovascular fitness but musculoskeletal condition as well, you cannot simply pick up where you left off for the exercises you are asking.. Please bear this in mind especially when you’re booking XC/ showjumping lessons and different surfaced arena’s etc. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of being able to go to lessons and clinics again and so easy to forget about the health of our horse’s muscles..

01.01.2022 *APPOINTMENT AVAILABLE* Appointment available due to unforeseen cancellation available tomorrow (Tuesday 2nd) Please message to secure a spot
