25.01.2022 Your mistakes do not define you! Lets not even call them that, lets say they have been opportunities for you to learn about yourself, others and the world. No matter how many mistakes (opportunities to learn) that youve experienced, what truly defines you is the type of person you have chosen to be based on things like your experiences, you values, your attitudes and your behaviours.

24.01.2022 As we enter into stage 2 of easing the COVID19 restrictions we have to now re-learn how to adjust our behaviours and routines as we settle into a new normal. As a parent during these stressful times it can raise all sorts of anxieties and worries as we think about things like; Whats it going to be like for me and my family once the job keeper allowance stops? Will I have a job to return to? Will I have to go on unemployment until work picks up again?... Now that we are allowed to go out in small groups and reconnect with family and friends, what will that look like for me? Will I feel safe reconnecting or will it increase my anxiety? How can I manage my level of emotional distress in a way that doesnt negatively impact on my family? Prof. Matt Sanders, Parenting and Family Psychology expert and founder of the Triple P, Positive Parenting Program talks about these issues and how you can effectively learn ways to change the way you think about things. This in turn can help you decrease your stress levels so that your children do not witness bad conflict between their parents. He also offers up other strategies to help you effectively manage these stressful times so that your anxiety remains at a healthy manageable level. Please click on the link below to Prof. Matt Saunders podcast. It is 13 minutes worth listening to.

24.01.2022 This time of year can be particularly challenging for a lot of people due to a number of reasons. But never forget this message below.

Quite often feelings of anxiety can be triggered when you get stuck in your head worrying about the future. Feelings of depression can be triggered when you get stuck worrying about the past. ... Bring your focus back the the present moment. Try not to get stuck in your head worrying about things that may or may not happen or things that you cant change and no longer have any control over. Enjoy the moment you are in.

22.01.2022 It’s been a big year for everyone so we would not be surprised if you are feeling, stressed, anxious or overwhelmed right now. With Christmas just around the corner it can be a joyous time but in our current times of COVID it can be very stressful. Perhaps financially things are a little more challenging this year. Wanting to connect with your loved ones can be challenging due to border and social distancing restrictions. ... If you are feeling overwhelmed and feel like your anxiety has risen, that’s a perfectly normal reaction given what’s happening in life at the moment. Anxiety is a fear driven emotion that can trigger a response from your emotional and survival brains where you can go into fight, flight or freeze modes. Basically this can manifest in the following ways. Fight - your window of tolerance is significantly diminished so you may find yourself being more snappy, irritable, getting angry over silly things that normally wouldn’t bother you. Flight - you may be feeling so overwhelmed that all you want to do is run away from the situation and be alone. People bother you, they zap the little bit of energy you have left, you have no patience for other people’s dramas. You just want to retreat. Freeze - this can be the stunned mullet or dear in the headlights response to stress. You’ve got nothing, you withdraw, words just wash over you. It’s like you are going into shutdown mode in an attempt to self preserve. Again, these are perfectly normal reactions to a stressful event. But don’t despair, don’t lose hope and please don’t think you’re going crazy. You’re not, you’re probably overloaded and overwhelmed. At TasLife Counselling we can help you develop a skill set to be able to recognise sooner when your stress responses have been activated. We can teach you coping and defusing skills so that it aids in building resilience and strength. I like to refer to going to counselling, a bit like going to Bunnings when you have a project to work on. Sometimes you have the tools you need at hand and they work perfectly well. But other times you might find a tool has been worn out so you need to update it or you just need more tools in your tool kit that’s better suited to the task at hand. That’s what counselling is like. At TasLife what we offer to do is look at the reaction you are having to your experience and help you to find the tools to manage it better. If you’re interested in finding out more about how we can help you to Calm your Farm please send us a DM. It costs nothing to ask your question. We are here to help you live a happier, healthier life. TELEHEALTH options available if you can’t make it to our Launceston office.

19.01.2022 I guess a lot of people are missed out on hugs these days thanks to Covid but if you’re able to safely hug your loved ones, go ahead, you’ll feel better for it. If you can’t physically hug due to social distancing, sending a virtual hug or air hug is the next best thing in these challenging time’s. Receiving a special hug like this shows that someone cares and is thinking of you.

16.01.2022 A very important vote was held today. This proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill will now advance to the next stage. Which is a vote by the committee in March. We are nudging closer and closer to making Volunteer Assisted Dying, Legislation. This gives terminally ill people the right to choose a death that is dignified. Well done to the 17 MPs who supported this very important cause in the Lower House today.

15.01.2022 Just because people put on a brave face or a happy face, it doesnt mean that this is how they feel in private. If you notice a change in mood or behaviour of you family member or friend, dont be afraid to ask if they are ok or if there is something they need. You dont have to fix their problem, you just need to acknowledge and let that person know you noticed and you are there if they need you.

14.01.2022 I hope this puts a smile on your dial today

14.01.2022 Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) is a term coined by Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun in 1995. It is defined as a positive change that occurs following a traumatic life experience. A traumatic life experience can only be interpreted by the individual experiencing it. What I define as traumatic to me may not be traumatic to you. It can range from something like experiencing abuse, a relationship breakdown, the loss of a loved one, job or home right through to natural disaste...rs. You may think it unusual that someone can find strength in adversity but lets think about Rosie Batty, a mother who tragically lost her son as a result of domestic violence inflicted by her abusive husband. She went on and became Australian of the Year for the efforts she put into putting Domestic Violence on the National Agenda. She rose above adversity and turned her tragic experience into something that can help others. When adversity strikes us we have a choice. We can become a victim of the situation and spiral down hill or we can tap into our inner strength and move forward, we can grow as a strong capable human being, we can stand tall and say Ive got this!

03.01.2022 Its Mens Health Week - 15-21 June, 2020. Mens health is important. What we know about most men is they are not great at going to the doctors when they need to, they seem to think its some sort of weakness to ask for help (its not) and they tend to conceal their ailments until they become so bad that they are virtually forced to do something about it. Now Im not just talking physical health here. Mens mental health really needs more attention in this space. ... Did you know that; Researchers discovered that between July 2015 and June 2016, there were 112,637 ambulance attendances for men experiencing acute mental health issues. (Beyond Blue).

01.01.2022 Thank you to all our paid and unpaid First Responders. You are all doing a fabulous job

01.01.2022 Yesterday was R U OK Day. I personally think every day should be R U OK Day. It’s great to have a specific day dedicated to raising awareness, but let’s get into the habit of raising that awareness everyday. Everyday everyone experiences all sorts of emotions, ranging from happy and joyous to sad, angry, anxious, depressed or suicidal ideation. ... It can be quite normal to have these experiences and in small amounts they can be ok and manageable. It’s when these emotions become overwhelming, consuming or you can’t make sense of them is when they can start to become problematic. A lot of these emotions in this picture on my post can be coping mechanisms or stress reactions. Making sense of why someone is being bossy, angry, frustrated can help with better understanding what they are or have been going through. Remember if that anger is being directed at you, it’s not your fault. That emotion is about that person and I would be wondering if THEY R OK and how you can look after yourself so that YOU R OK. If someone is always making jokes, being silly and laughing at what you perceive to be inappropriate things or at an inappropriate time, perhaps this is a coping mechanism for that person. Again, I’d be wondering if THEY R OK and if it bothers you so much, I’d be wondering if YOU R OK. What has this response triggered in you? We can’t stop having emotional responses to events, situations or experiences, otherwise we’d just be robots. Most of the time when we are feeling happy, healthy, eating well, sleeping well and feel connected to others, we can make sense of and process the array of emotions we experience in everyday life. But sometimes these experiences become overwhelming and our ability to cope in times of adversity can be diminished. And that is when all sorts of emotions bubble up to the surface and can become a little too much for one person to handle. If this is you or someone you know, think about how you can reconnect with feeling happy, healthy, eating well, sleeping well and feeling connected to others. If you’re struggling to do this on you’re own, it’s ok to reach out to someone who cares about your wellbeing (whether that’s a friend, workplace support person or a professional) and say, hey, I’m not really feeling ok today. Connecting with someone and being willing to talk about your situation can help to lighten your load so that you can bring happiness and joy back into your life and have a life worth living. It doesn’t have to be hard or overwhelming. That’s a choice. R U OK? If not, please reach out and connect with someone you can trust to just sit with your emotions and help you to process them. It’s ok, you will be fine, you will get through this and come out a more stronger and resilient person.
