25.01.2022 Fuel Reduction Burn - Glenorchy If you're in the Greater Hobart area, you'll see smoke coming from Goat Hills at the back of Glenorchy this weekend. We'll have lots of resources on the ground from the Fuel Reduction Program to ensure the burn is appropriately managed. ... The Goat Hills burn will be around 155 hectares in total and will burn for the whole weekend. During burning operations public access to this area will be restricted. The public is asked to remain well out of the burn site while the burn is taking place and for the following days until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails. Please comply with directions from staff or any signs if you are in the area. This objective of this burn is to minimise the bushfire risk to life and property, particularly areas south of Glenorchy, including Hobart. It will serve to slow the spread of any fire from the Collinsvale Road area where fires have started in the past. The Goat Hills area also has significant infrastructure assets including a major communication tower and critical electricity transmission lines which will be protected by this burn. People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for the smoke. Advice is available from the Department of Health and Asthma Australia websites: http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/publichealth//air/bushfire_smoke and https://asthma.org.au/about-asthma/triggers/bushfire-smoke.

23.01.2022 Does it get more Aussie than Christmas on Bruny?

23.01.2022 Hazard icons across the country have a new consistent look. The new Australian Warning System introduces several changes to the way the community will be notified about hazards. We're rolling out the first stage of the changes to the Australian Warning System for bushfire in Tassie today. The changes will include the way bushfire warnings are displayed on the TFS website. From today, consistent colours will be used for: ... Advice (yellow), Watch and Act (orange); and Emergency Warning (red) The icon shapes will also change on maps from diamonds to triangles. While the colours and icons change, the meanings of the levels do not change. The changes are designed to bring consistency to the way warnings are displayed across Australia. Over time more states will use the new colours and icons and they will be used for other hazards like floods and storms. Further changes will occur in Tasmania in 2021, including enhancements to our warning messages. The Australian Warnings System is based on community research and good practice, in terms of what communities recognise and what gets people to take action during an emergency.

19.01.2022 The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook has been released today. Tasmania is currently experiencing significant grassland growth while we are in an unusual rainfall pattern. These grasslands will dry out during January when we should expect fast moving grass fires to occur on days of fire danger. Even later into the season, heavy fuels and peat will be available to burn.... We have seen a recent increase in escaped burns on private property which are burning into the night, which is an indication the fuels are drying out and the bushfire season is at our doorstep. The most important thing that Tasmanians can do now to prepare themselves for the upcoming season is to develop a 5-minute bushfire plan. We've launched a new online tool that can be accessed via www.fire.tas.gov.au and the Bushfire Why Risk It? campaign. The ‘5-minute bushfire plan’ in an easy to use online tool that allows people to run through a simple questionnaire to plan what they will do to keep themselves and everyone in their household safe in the event of a bushfire. 5 minutes is all it takes to give yourself the best chance of surviving a bushfire. The outlook is available here: https://www.bnhcrc.com.au/hazardnotes/85
