22.01.2022 Hi All, Please see below an update from Simon Hackett with important information about The Vale upgrade. Regards Ian... Ian Tucker Secretary Devonport Aero Club PO Box 787, Devonport, TAS, 7310 0419 397 326 [email protected] Hello all, Just a quick update about the runway status and a procedural request to pass on to DAC membership and (if possible) to the local Tas flying community in general: --- Substantial earthworks are well underway at The Vale - per the photo below. At completion, the slope and wet-weather resilience of the western half of the runway will be very substantially improved. The entire 1300M runway will be useable most of the year, with the historical challenges at the western end (boggy in winter, and steep slope) eliminated. In the interim, however, the remaining runway length (the grassed/untouched segment to the east - the RWY 24 end) is down to a total of 700m. The runway ends just past the concrete pad (where the earthworks visibly commences in the photo) Low bushes on the road at the 24 end and a low earthworks safety fence at boundary of the earthworks area (red dotted line on the photo) mean that both landing approaches need to be slightly displaced. As a visual guidance point: There is a white windsock on the southern side of the runway, located almost exactly half way along the remaining runway extent, at the 350m point. The location of this windsock is marked with an orange circle on the photo below. The earthmoving work is happening now. Once complete it will be some months before the grass runway can be regrown - hence the runway will remain shorter for some time. The Vale runway is a Prior Permission Required (obviously except in emergency) runway in general - noting that permission is routinely granted - but for the time being (until that earthwork is done), two important factors apply: 1) Wed prefer there were *no* non-emergency itinerant operations until the heavy machinery has finished its work on the runway - well send a note around when thats the case, but likely to be sometime around the end of March into the first week of April. 2) Please absolutely do ensure to ask ahead first - contact Philip de Bomford: [email protected] +61 409 669 433 so he can coordinate with the earthmoving equipment operators to clear off of the runway before any intended landing/takeoff operations occur. This is both for pragmatic safety reasons and also because their work safety regulations require it. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the new and improved runway in due course! Simon Hackett [email protected]

18.01.2022 **GOOD NEWS** Flight training at the TAC has resumed with hygiene requirements in place for the time being, however the weather isnt playing ball with us so lessons are happening when the weather allows. The TAC can now offer private hire of our aircraft to RPC holders. This would be a good opportunity for those unfamiliar with controlled airspace to gain experience and become familiar with controlled airspace procedures. RPC holders must meet certain requirements to privat...e hire the aircraft. The TAC can also offer flight reviews, endorsement training and training in your aircraft. Email or msg through Facebook to find out more.

16.01.2022 In 1978 Aminta Hennessy became the first Australian woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in a single-engine aircraft. She is also the first woman to complete s...olo back-to-back flights across the Pacific . Not so long ago Australians were refusing to fly with female pilots. Aminta was one of those pilots who had to fight to be accepted in the cockpit. She was inspired by her friend and mentor, Nancy Bird Walton, to enter the aviation industry and she has never regretted that decision. : 7.30 Report ABC
