04.01.2022 AYRLIE, 322 LIVERPOOL STREET, HOBART Ayrlie is a substantial three-storey Gothic revival villa in a garden setting designed in 1880 by the well-known Hobart architect Henry Hunter (1832-1892). The site is located in an elevated position at 322 Liverpool Street, West Hobart with views of West Hobart. The building is considered to be substantially intact and in reasonably sound condition. The landscape of Ayrlie, which remains partially intact is a contrived and thoughtful inte...gration of house and garden within a town setting. The archaeological potential of the study area is considered variable. There are relatively few phases of built development, c.1840s housing; followed by the c.1880 construction of Ayrlie with associated outbuildings, hard landscaping and ornamental structures. There is no overlap in the locations of past and current buildings which suggests a higher probability for archaeological potential. The key disturbance has been landform modifications with creation of levelled terraces descending down the hillslope. In some cases, cuttings to form these terraces are likely to have disturbed archaeological deposits. However, in others, site levelling may have buried, and therefore protected subsurface archaeology. The study area historically formed part of a larger property, first developed in 1810 with the construction of Hobart’s first flour mill, on the northern bank of the rivulet. What is now 322 Liverpool Street is outside of this mill site, and appears to have remained as pasture or gardens over the ensuing decades. It was not until the 1840s that the first phases of built development within the study area took place. This began with a small hut or cottage fronting Liverpool Street, followed by two dwellings located on the southern side of the study area, and accessed via Molle Street. Little is known about these residences, but they appear to have been working class tenant housing, including in part for employees of the adjacent flour mill. The character of the place changed markedly in the late nineteenth century, with its purchase by Andrew Paton Miller, a prominent pharmacist and leader in the distillation and export of eucalyptus oil. The site was cleared and in 1880, architect Henry Hunter was commissioned to design a grand and imposing house within expansive grounds and overlooking the city. The house remains to this day.
