23.01.2022 This is a great opportunity for our schools. Seize this wonderful chance for children to grow your own tomatoes. Great for the school menu as well.
23.01.2022 We had a great time visiting St Brigid’s Catholic School as part of their Move Well Eat Well celebrations. Great working with #familyfoodpatch and #movewelleatwell and serving yummy, tasty food to the students.
23.01.2022 On Friday I visited #RichmondPrimary school to meet with Mrs Caglayan, kitchen/garden teacher, with Libby from #eatwelltas. We had a great time talking with the students at the school about their school and community produce garden and what their plans were for 2021. We also made some yummy, simple lunch options. Richmond Primary School were an important part of the #healthytasmania funded pilot that enabled #richmondprimary#warraneprimary and #triabunnadistrictschool to prov...ide a two course sit down lunch to students 5 days a week for 4 weeks. A big shout out to Russell, Tamara and Kathy and their teams who provided the yummy lunch options during the pilot. #menziesinstituteofmedicalresearch are evaluating the pilot and we are really looking forward to the results being released soon. visit the websites of #eatwelltas #FamilyFoodPatch #childhealthassociationtasmania and #movewelleatwell for some great lunch box ideas. And support your school canteen for some great lunch options as well. See more

20.01.2022 The Tasmanian School Canteen Association (TSCA) recognises the public concern of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the potential impact on our schools and the role of the canteen. The TSCA reminds all school canteens, cafeterias and school cafes that there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 spreads via foods and to ensure thorough hygiene practices are in place (which we know you do anyway). For further information please visit the following link by right clicking on it to open... the link . https://www.foodstandards.gov.au//NOVEL-CORONAVIRUS-AND-FO We also encourage you to visit the Australian Government’s Department of Health website (again right click on the words) which provides up-to-date information to help with monitoring the situation that we are faced with. The website has useful resources such as the print ad ‘promoting good hand washing practices to help stop the spread of COVID-19’. The TSCA is here to provide support to schools and canteen managers on school food at this difficult time. Please contact our friendly TSCA team on 03 62 238023 for further advice and information.
20.01.2022 A morning chat on ABC News Radio about the School Lunch Program!
18.01.2022 It has been a very busy couple of weeks with numerous schools around the state cooking up ready to eat meals for their school community members. This is an initiative by the #TSCA in partnership with Loaves and Fishes Tasmania and Family Food Patch during COVID19. A big thank you to Loaves and Fishes for the amazing ingredients that you are sourcing and dropping off to schools so that staff can cook many ready to eat meals. Also thank you to Family Food Patch for some great ...recipes and advice on cooking. But the biggest thank you goes to all of our amazing Canteen Managers out there along with Teachers and School Business Managers who have seen a way to support their families through the joy of food. We at the TSCA, are so proud of what you are doing. Thank you doesn't seem enough. From the provided carrots, onions, potatoes, mince, chicken, apples, oats and milk, our amazing school staff have been making Apple Crumble with Custard, Cottage Pie, Chilli Con Carne, Chicken Macaroni, Anzac Biscuits, Jacket Potatoes with Savoury Mince and much more to share with their families. If your school is interested in connecting with your school community, during these difficult times through providing meals, please contact the TSCA to get started. See more

15.01.2022 Hello everyone, We have had a number of enquiries to the office in the wake of COVID-19 and wanted to communicate information to all canteens to support you, and provide an update on the services at the TSCA. We know it is an uncertain time for everyone. We encourage you to continue seeking information from reliable sources like the Australian Government and www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au.... We congratulate you if you have been able to safely continue in providing a canteen service and are able to be a friendly face and sense of normal for students at this time. We know everyone is doing the best they can at this strange time to look after their staff, volunteers, and students. Also, take care of yourselves. Please continue to contact us for support wherever you need it. The TSCA Hobart office will be staffed, but at a reduced capacity, with some staff working from home on certain days. Maria and Tina have always worked from their home office, so it is business as usual with them, if they are your main contact. So, we are still here for you. We exist to support canteens and schools and plan to keep doing just that. We will touch base with you next term. We are hoping that even if the children are ‘learning from home’ you will still be at work and we can support you with reaccreditations, accreditations, resources, etc. We are also establishing some on-line learning modules that could support you in addressing your Professional Development Plans. Have a restful school holiday break. Warm Regards, Julie, Kirsty, Laura, Jen, Maria and Tina
13.01.2022 We had a fabulous day at East Launceston Primary school today. Maria joined Susan, from Save the Children, dietitians, Alison and Claire from the Department of Health, and a group of school mums, to cook and then eat delicious multicultural lunch. The mums made two Afghani dishes. The first one was 'bolani', which is a bread dough, rolled out and then filled with a mixture of mashed potato, chopped leeks, coriander, spring onion and chilli, then pan fried until golden. The se...cond dish was 'kuku', which is a mixture of grated raw potato, flour, eggs, garlic, chilli and turmeric, made into patties and then pan fried. Maria and Claire made chicken burgers and potato and zucchini burgers from our Make it Tasty Make it We'll cookbook. A big thankyou to East Launceston Primary for welcoming us into your school and for the use of your great kitchen. We had the best time and enjoyed the day cooking, sharing and eating.
13.01.2022 Look at what Lenah Valley Primary School have been up to. Great work team. If other schools are interested in this project please contact the TSCA for more info.

09.01.2022 We visited Warrane Primary School yesterday to see the children enjoying being part of the School Lunch Program. Happy faces and full tummies!
09.01.2022 Well done Waverley Primary School for providing a hot lunch for your students and staff today. Chilli con carne (minus the chilli) was on the menu and according to the diners, it was delicious . All of the ingredients were kindly donated by #loavesandfishestasmania, Young's Vegie Shed - Launceston and IGA Everyday Ravenswood. Tudors Pack N Wrap donated the reusable cups and the Launceston Benevolent Society donated the metal forks. Here's some pics:
08.01.2022 This will be a great event and you will be able to share with the government your thoughts about Tasmanian children's well-being needs. The Well Fed Tasmania food van, that we partner with the Child Health Association of Tasmania, will be serving up some great school lunch ideas. Hope to see you there. #childhealthassociationtasmania #wellbeingintasmania
08.01.2022 We know that Term 2 was a struggle for some school canteens. Not being able to share your day with your volunteers, preparing and cooking food for the children, having to adjust to a different way to fill your day with very few students and as a consequence a decrease in demand and a drop in sales. During this time some of you have had time to consider your current menu and have revamped your plans for Term 3. Many of you are: offering a smaller number of menu items have... introduced regular rotating daily/weekly specials made the most of seasonal produce e.g. carrots, potatoes, zucchinis and pears, and marketed your specials well to reconnect with the children as they returned to school. If you have been thinking of doing something similar and need help making changes to your menu, we are only an email or phone call away at [email protected] or 03 62238023. We also have lots of new ideas and activities coming your way and we look forward to visiting you and sharing these with you very soon. Here's to a rewarding Term 3 and 4 from the TSCA team. See more
07.01.2022 The wonderful videos that the #TSCA have been involved with making with #FamilyFood Patch and #ClarenceCityCouncil and #RosnyCollege media students was well covered in the Mercury on Saturday with Eden showing us her vegie tossing skills. For a look at the videos please go to the following site: https://www.liveclarence.com.au//eating-w/healthy-recipes/ These recipes would be great to use in the canteen and for schools wanting to get involved with feeding their children whilst they are working from home they could be a great way to go. Please contact the TSCA for further information about the possibilities of cooking for students whilst they are learning from home.

02.01.2022 Here's a peek at the meal Canteen Manager, Toni and Student Networker, Jacinta offered their school families this week at Waverley Primary. They chose the TSCA's minced beef curry recipe, using ingredients supplied by #LovesandFishes Tasmania, plus some bits from their store cupboard. Toni prepared the ingredients needed for 50 serves of the recipe, then added chopped carrot and celery, and diced sweet potato. She also added uncooked rice and additional stock. The mixture was... divided into 4 deep baking dishes (35cm x 30cm and $7at Kmart ) and cooked in the oven. The result was a yummy pilaf style dish. Adding the extra veg and rice increased the serving size from 50 to 60. Once the curry was put into a family sized container, it was topped with steamed broccolini and accompanied with plain Greek yoghurt, to be stirred through after reheating at home. Jacinta created a sticker that was placed on the top of each family meal pack, with instructions for storing and reheating.
02.01.2022 Many congratulations to Hobart College for achieving Bronze level Canteen Accreditation. They are our FIRST EVER Government run College to become accredited. A fabulous achievement! Well done to everyone involved. It is also the first time the TSCA has reached the milestone of having 100 accredited schools. Many reasons to celebrate! Pictured is Canteen staff member Sue serving student Indy Ryan some healthy options at Hobart College.
