21.01.2022 Tasmanian Special Timbers the Huon Pine Specialists Covid 19 announcement, updated 20th June; Our company will continue to operate, within government and health guidelines. The sawmill near Queenstown will operate as usual from Monday to Thursday, while the Strahan shop will be open every day with slightly more limited hours to walk-ins, roughly 12.00 to 4.00pm. He reminisced about his time as a child working on Huon Pine with his sawmiller father and uncles. 16.01.2022 You dont need paint or pencils Dec 27, 2019 Sometimes our clients will send us photographs of the finished items they have made from our timber, and we are pleased to celebrate that work on screens in our shop, and on our website. But just occasionally we get an even closer look at the creative process, and are able to watch as a piece of raw Huon pine is turned into a piece of art.... When Darren and Amanda Wakefield moved to Strahan in 2010 Darren was already an established wood artist, winning awards for his creations in a variety of timbers. Easy access to Huon pine fostered his creativity even more, and we have been delighted to see what wonderful pieces he has crafted out of rough and rugged looking raw pieces of wood. In his day job Darren generally makes largely prosaic items, but still finds time after hours to create pieces flowing, sinuous, stunning and surprising, and the house that he and Amanda are renovating is a focus for much of his recent work. This Huon Pine tree spent many many years growing in the valley of the Upper Gordon River, 30 years in the floating raft of salvaged timber on Lake Gordon, and a terrifying few minutes as a bushfire burnt many of its mates in 2003 before it finally came to us. 14.01.2022 HUON PINE STORY; For some, it is the stories of adventure and resourcefulness that characterised the men who worked in the impenetrable temperate rainforests to extract the timber, creating a simple name for themselves, Piners, and an enduring legend. Huon pine is still regarded as the best boat building timber in the world: The timbers unique capacity to withstand rot for hundreds and even thousands of years, it resists the marine borer which infests all other wooden bo...ats and its ability to float even as a green log has enabled salvage processes unheard of in other timber industries: It is light and extraordinarily stable and has exceptional strength for its weight, and can be bent and moulded to great angles. Equally as famous as the King Billy Piners, are the Huon Piners in Strahan. Families such as the Abels, Dochertys, Cranes and Morrisons had several generations of men working on the banks of the Gordon River and its tributaries harvesting the tress with axe and crosscut saw, and moving them into the rivers using just block and tackle, and lots of muscle. The Morrison brothers had several operations in the Gordon River and its tributaries in the 1930s to 1960s. In 1947 Reg and Doyle established a Sawmill on the Strahan waterfront, which is still operated to this day by members of the family. In later years Reg set up the cruise company now known as World Heritage Cruises while Doyle ran the mill with his sons, Snowy and Randal. In a lovely connection so characteristic of this industry, Randal Morrisons grandfather, Jim, ran a Huon pine sawmill at the mouth of the King River near Strahan from 1910. In 1936 he sold the mill equipment to a young up-and-comer from Queenstown, Cliff Bradshaw, who took it through the rugged bush to establish the Princess River sawmill. Eighty years later, the families are once again connected, when Randal took the opportunity to develop a professional partnership with Bern Bradshaw, and Tasmanian Special Timbers was born. 02.01.2022 KING BILLY PINE; Growing only in the alpine areas of western Tasmania, King William (Billy) Pine has suffered enormously from fire. In an ironic twist of fate, the King Billy is quickly killed by fire, but not actually burnt up. Remarkably, it is these fire- killed trees which have been the major resource for timber-getters. After a major fire ravaged the Raglan Range and nearby Frenchmans Cap in the 1960s the Bradshaw family were tasked with salvaging the dead trees. They... cut tracks up impossibly steep mountains and worked for months at a time winching the dead logs up to the top of the track, and then driving them down dangerously steep roadways. Several decades of salvage and careful husbanding of the logs has created a stockpile at our mill. Bern Bradshaw, one of our companys founders, is a second generation King Billy Pine Sawmiller, while Ian, his son, is a third generation Sawmiller; Custodians and Supplier of the last commercially milled King Billy Pine.
