08.01.2022 World First at Local Canoe Club Tasmanian Canoe Club members were amused when James Casper arrived at the whitewater venue with his sea kayak attached to his ca...r. Jokingly they suggested he paddle it on the stationary river wave. We didn't take his reply seriously, "I'll warm up with my short boat first." Later in the evening James put away his short boat and unloaded the 5.2m sea kayak, carried it to the river and had a surf. Many of us were just shaking our heads but international paddler, Jill Dassing, started laughing as James held his edge and nerve to stay upright and carve slowly across the wave. Club members said they hadn't seen anyone surfing river waves in a sea kayak before and Rob claimed it was a world first. It certainly was a first time that the Forth Whitewater wave has been paddled in a sea kayak and provided plenty of entertainment to the 40 paddlers enjoying a Thursday afternoon on Forth River, courtesy of Hydro Tasmania recreational releases.
