16.01.2022 Labor’s Mic Drop Commitment to Tassie Tourism TICT Media Release Saturday 27 April 2019 The extraordinary package of tourism investments committed today by ...the Federal Opposition could lay the foundation for Tasmania to emerge as one of the world’s premier visitor destinations. Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO, Luke Martin, said the $100 million-plus tourism package was unprecedented on a Tasmanian and national scale. ‘The is a jaw-dropping outcome for our industry from this federal election campaign,’ Mr Martin said. ‘It represents a sign of confidence in tourism and its importance to the Tasmanian economy and community. ‘Critically, the commitments announced today are not ‘pork-barrelling’ in the context of an election campaign, but highly strategic investments in the core pillars of Tasmania’s tourism brand; our National Parks, regional destinations and, of course, our global drawcard in MONA. ‘It is inevitable Hobart will one day have a new convention centre, but not another costly cookie-cutter convention centre the same as what every other Australian city has. ‘This commitment today, leveraging MONA’s private investment, will give Tasmania convention and performance facilities unique on a national and global scale. ‘It will be a drawcard in itself, achieving a MONA 2.0 effect on our industry and the State. ‘The investments at Cradle Mountain, Mt Field and Freycinet National Park are all about providing the facilities and infrastructure these iconic National Parks need to sustainably manage current and future visitor and community expectations. ‘The Australian Government has a moral responsibility to invest in Tasmania’s protected areas, especially our world heritage areas, which also underpin Tasmania’s visitor economy. ‘The commitments to Tahune, Beauty Point, Smithton, and for regional trails are all sensible investments in supporting regional parts of Tasmania to share in a growing visitor pie. Mr Martin acknowledged the scale of today’s commitment represented a watershed moment for the Tasmanian tourism industry. ‘Should these commitments lead to actual funding, they will stimulate business confidence, encourage private investment and ultimately create new Tasmanian tourism businesses and jobs, which is ultimately what we’re all trying to achieve.'
