18.01.2022 Another panel member has joined our ranks for Cross Pollinate 2020 - Tom Westcott. Chef Tom McHugo's Hobart Hotel, fermenting fanatic and amazingly committed an...d genuine human being. I (Jen) first met Tom when I had just started at Sprout in 2016, when Tom was heading up the Heavy Metal Kitchen at MONA, here is a great snap of him on that day. From then on, Tom has always been a part of our food conversation here at Sprout, always ready to offer his thoughts on various challenging aspects of our food system here in Tassie. We LOVE Tom for his unfaltering commitment to Tassie growers and farmers, he builds incredibly strong relationships in this space, and treats them like a very even two way street, which we think is exactly how it needs to work for both parties - hospitality and farmer! Tom will be bringing his insights and thoughts about the Tassie food system to our panel on Monday at Cross Pollinate 2020. Get your tickets now - they close on 29th October!

Each tag is worth $10,000 to the angler that returns the fish, tagged intact to the Inland Fisheries Service. Well done and thanks also to the Westbury Fishing Club, who organised a competition at Lake Rowallan last weekend and gave Fiona the opportunity to reel in the trout, Mr Barnett said. 17.01.2022 Tomato seedlings TOMATO and garlic growers Annette and Nevil Reed have opened their Selbourne farm with the second of two main sales this weekend. Tasmanian Natural Garlic and Tomatoes grow almost 150 tomato varieties each year on their tomatoes are sold fresh over the summer, both within Tasmania and interstate, as seed throughout the year and as seedlings throughout October and November. We have been madly planting and potting up seedlings for the last six weeks in time f...or the annual sale, as well as putting in our own crop, Mrs Reed said. Alongside the tomatoes, garlic is quickly approaching harvest time. With the main part of seedling sales taking place on the farm, COVID this year has presented added challenges. Our thousands of seedlings are well spread out across four large areas. We have established one way vehicle and foot traffic, a sign-in register and other precautions. More information contact Annette Reed on 0438 009 522.The farm is at 338 Four Springs Road, Selbourne. See more

12.01.2022 In response to the potato risk alarm story Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Guy Barnett responded in a statement today 25 September. "Strong support for our potato farmers The Chief Plant Health Manager has approved a conditional exemption to import potatoes from a single South Australian company earlier this year based on the best available evidence and in accordance with agreed terms of biosecurity risk management and trade. "I have spoken with potato farmers an...d other members of the agricultural community, and I have heard their concerns around this decision. "While the Government has complete confidence in the independence and ability for Biosecurity Tasmania to make this decision, I have asked the Department to look into this matter further and provide an update early next week on the reasoning for the decision. "To be clear, trade between States is not unusual and happens regularly. Tasmania relies heavily on this freedom certification to underpin our own export trade. Whether it be cherries, apples, pears, broccoli, peas, carrots the same rules apply, and I have confidence in Tasmania’s biosecurity system." "

07.01.2022 Tasmanian Working Sheepdog Association State Championships COMPETITORS from throughout the state will compete in the Tasmanian Working Sheepdog Association State Championships starting today at the Campbelltown War Memorial Oval. Competition starts10am with the Novice and Encourage events, which are classes for inexperienced dogs and new competitors. Tomorrow morning the Open and Improver events begin, which are for the experienced dogs and handlers .Sunday is the big day wi...th the state’s top dogs competing for State Champion title. There are 50 dogs entered in the Open class, 16 in the Improver, 19 in the Novice and 5 in the Encourage. TWSDA president Lee Jamieson said it is a great opportunity for Tasmanians wanting to explore their own backyard to make their way to Campbell Town to see the incredible skill of dogs and handlers as they compete for the title of State Champion. The standard is expected to be high, but recent form really means little, it always depends on the three sheep you draw on the day and how well you and your dog can handle them, Mr Jamieson said. You always need a bit of luck to back up all the hard work that goes into preparing your dog for competition. Realistically there are at least 10 different combinations of dogs and handlers who could take out this year’s Open class, and there’s plenty of healthy rivalry amongst competitors vying for the win. The other standout for this weekend is the number of new competitors. We have seen a significant number of new competitors since the season started and if there is one positive to come out of the COVID-19 for us, it is that our competition is growing and there is plenty of opportunity for new participants to have a go. The only disappointing thing for us this weekend is that we were due to be hosting the national event, the Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championship and Australia against New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman. Like so many events this year COVID has forced a postponement until 2021. The championships are event free and spectators are welcome See more

To the former publishers, I pose this quiet question: "Where would you be without farmers?" --J. B. Robson
