25.01.2022 Feral deer are an increasing threat to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area & some other national parks. The Tas govt is preparing a Wild Fallow Deer Management Plan. Deer should be eradicated from conservation reserves. See the link below for our recent submission. Invasive Species Council

24.01.2022 Greens questions during budget estimates last month produced some interesting responses & information from Parks Minister Jaensch regarding then Malbena RAA assessment, wilderness impacts, and the proponent's lease.

23.01.2022 While US-oriented, there are a few locally-relevant messages in this somewhat humorous video.

21.01.2022 De-staffing one of our accessible, family-friendly national parks ahead of summer & a rebuilding of the local tourism industry doesn't seem a great strategic move. Take action here - https://mailchi.mp/tas/keepmariastaffed

21.01.2022 The Invasive Species Council and former Greens leader Christine Milne have written to World Heritage governing body UNESCO in a plea for international help to address the ‘urgent and increasing threat’ feral deer now pose to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

19.01.2022 It was an emergency apparently, for 16 helicopters! Yeah, right. Not a great message here sent by those entrusted to manage our wild places.

19.01.2022 A fine example of the sort of rhetoric we are up against in defending Lk Malbena, and the other wild places threatened by the Tas govt's EoI tourism projects.

18.01.2022 Some significant questions here - has the proposed Malbena project morphed into something much more substantial, or has PWS been incredibly sloppy with its projected $ numbers and tried to inflate the true value of EoI projects? Minister Jaensch chose not to answer.

17.01.2022 CHRIS OLDFIELD SPINS DODGING ABORIGINAL HERITAGE AS A PROCEDURAL MATTER YESTERDAY'S APPEAL launched by the Mount Wellington Cableway Company (MWCC) against the ...Hobart City Council, was stood down for three weeks for mediation and written submissions: https://www.themercury.com.au//978fdbbd9c72f4341bedd515f25 (subscriber only) MWCC states that it has completed a desktop assessment and is arguing that additional information requested by council experts about the project’s potential impact on Aboriginal heritage has breached time limits in the Land Use Planning Assessment Act and is therefore unreasonable. On ABC Hobart Drive yesterday afternoon Chris Oldfield explained: "What we are really asking is a procedural matter. It's not about the Aboriginal heritage question as such. I think we we have shown the greatest respect for Aboriginal heritage on the Mountain." "All through this process we've been very respectful towards the Aboriginal heritage issues and we continue to be so, and we believe the response that we have given reflects the concerns for these matters very deeply." https://www.abc.net.au//mount-wellington-cable-ca/12854158 (10 minute Chris Oldfield interview; link to full episode in comment below) ROCC'S spokesperson Vica Bayley said yesterday: This is a shocking use of the courts to dodge the need to do a proper Aboriginal heritage survey on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, one of Tasmania’s few landscapes given a dual name because of its significance to Aboriginal heritage, http://tacinc.com.au/official-aboriginal-and-dual-names/ Rather than be respectful, the MWCC has blatantly disrespected the Aboriginal community by registering the Aboriginal name kunanyi in a number of domain and business names, which Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre CEO Heather Sculthorpe says is "misappropriation of Aboriginal culture and language", and the MWCC has disregarded the community's repeated requests to return the name. https://ourlanguages.org.au/bold-bid-on-kunanyi-domain/ https://www.abc.net.au//hobart-battle-over-cable-c/9891312 For over seven years the MWCC has ignored the Tasmanian Aboriginal community's opposition to its proposal to build a cable car on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, it has misappropriated Aboriginal culture and language for its own commercial benefit, and now has the gall to dismiss the issue of Aboriginal heritage entirely, spinning it as a technical "procedural matter" to be dealt with in court. What do you think? Image: Screenshot from yesterday's online story by Jessica Howard published on page 3 of today's Mercury "Cable car bid put in park". 17.01.2022 A Biosecurity Strategy for the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is under development. We hope that it will direct some much needed attention and resources onto biosecurity, which has been seriously neglected in recent years. You can view our submission below. There is also still time this week to make one of your own; see here - https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au//tasm/twwha-biosecurity-strategy

15.01.2022 Tourism developments in national parks, and exactly what consitutes 'ecotourism', has been an issue in Qld for perhaps somewhat longer than in Tasmania. In this context, this policy statement from our friends at National Parks Association of Queensland is an informative read.

15.01.2022 Fires have recently ravaged more than 80,000 ha of Qld's World-Heritage-listed Fraser Island. Here's a good article on the islands background. There are lessons for reserve management Australia wide.

14.01.2022 A draft Tourism Master Plan for Kakadu National Park has just been released for comment. Sadly, the 260 page draft plan contains the sort of pro-development stuff we are familiar with in Tasmania. It even proposes an EoI process (then following is an extract): "Undertake the following EOI processes - engage with industry to identify new visitor experience concepts including activities, sites and visitor infrastructure in consultation with traditional owners engage with ind...ustry to develop private accommodation options for glamping / ecolodge / wellness retreats at various locations in Kakadu for refreshment kiosks at key attraction sites to improve food and beverage offerings such as food trucks, coffee carts, campground kiosks. During stakeholder engagement on the Tourism Master Plan several innovative ideas were raised for the Jim Jim and Twin Falls Precinct: a zipline from the top of Jim Jim Falls to the end of the plunge pool glass bottomed viewing platforms and walkways tropical summer helicopter tours to sites such as Jim Jim." You can comment until 13 November (see link below, & a short survey option for commenting is available). See more

09.01.2022 This years Richard Jone Lecture is necessarily a different format (online), next Wed evening, but looks interesting. More info and registration at link below.

07.01.2022 Good to see this peaceful protest in Launceston recently. More in Hobart next week - https://www.facebook.com/events/667545140534361/

07.01.2022 A PWS audit has found Tasmania's major commercial guided walking company has a range of unacceptable issues at their huts on the Overland Track. Some of these have been known for some time. Hopefully they will now be fixed ASAP, and that PWS will have the will to oversee, follow up & implement a proper monitoring system rather than rely on a once-in-a-blue-moon audit.

05.01.2022 The serious impact of feral horses in the Australian Alps has been well-documented. Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley & Peter Garrett separately visited Kosciuszko National Park recently, raising the profile of the escalating problem, hopefully leading towards a solution.

03.01.2022 It's great that some elements of the Tas tourism industry appreciate the true values of Tasmanian's wild places and feel able to speak out. The TICT view has been unchallenged for too long.

01.01.2022 The potential impact of feral deer on the TWWHA has been something of a sleeper issue issue; certainly the govt seems to have been dozing so far. The development of a deer management plan provides a timely opportunity to move things along.
