19.01.2022 The roof over our new orchard! We both have a good feeling about this location and despite our main orchard being nice and healthy we both feel they might perform better with more coverage from direct sun and wind. Im pretty sure our good access to water has been our saving grace for our main orchard so far which is exposed to all the elements.... We get among the states highest rainfall here in Geeveston and also have a small but useful water licence, that came with our farm when we bought it and helps us to irrigate from Kermandie River during summer months. 100 of our highest yielding varieties are going into this new orchard site this week so fingers crossed our rationale of following natures lead pays off! #pepper #food #nativepepper #mountainpepper #pepperberry #geeveston #farm #farmfood #organicfood #tasmania #huonvalley #australia #countrylife

17.01.2022 Were spending Easter this year, continuing ISO, this time at the farm trying to tick off more from our long (and ever growing) to do list. Todays agenda mostly involved mowing, brush cutting and clearing areas of the surrounding bush ready for new fences to go in and cattle to arrive. A small herd of Herefords will be joining us here at the pepper farm soon alongside a lovely duo of highland heifers.... Were setting up the farm for strip grazing to manage our pasture sustainably so we can continue to use natural practices, no fertiliser and no sprays. Weve had some great guidance from our farming mentors who have managed their land like this for years successfully so hopefully we can do them (and Joshs Dad) proud! Anyway, nice to be home now with the fire roaring, a slow cooked lamb shoulder with red wine and Pepperberry bubbling away and a choccy Easter bunny with my name on it! 11.01.2022 The (Kermandie) river on our farm is absolutely gushing at the moment creating the most beautiful sound around the farm! 07.01.2022 New orchard setting. Ive put Josh on the shovel today digging holes while I brush cut the path clear for our new under story orchard. It feels strange planting under here but also right.... We hiked the south coast trail last month and the best, highest yielding wild pepper trees we found had good over head coverage and thick forest litter surrounding them: So, in our mission to replicate the wild and not take from it, our new orchard is in the cleared understory of some of our surrounding rainforest on the farm. We planted 100 trees today to test our rationale, but feel good about the site so well keep monitoring and let you know how this new site progresses Happy Sunday everyone. 06.01.2022 Happy long weekend all. We spent yesterday making the most of the clear, albeit bloody cold, day continuing to clear more space in our second orchard site which is in the understory part of the main farm. No more planting will take place until Spring now thanks to these cracking frosts which would literally freeze any junior trees and prevent their roots from binding with the soil. ... It was still -2.5 at 9am on the farm this morning and feels like were in for an extra cold winter this year, even our local Bennets wallabies that are normally following us around in the morning were no where to be seen, I dont blame them. 03.01.2022 The last juicy berries from harvest 2020. I always thought 2020 would stick out for us in future years because of this first harvest... little did I know!! Also, how is it Friday already? ... Anyone else completely losing track of days and dates at the moment? Ill have company on the farm tomorrow which is nice as I drag Josh in to help me get our new under storey orchard site ready. Our exposed main orchard has done really well thanks to this years cold summer but in the wild they do a lot better with taller trees like gums towering above them, shielding them from direct sun so were continuing our mission to replicate their natural environment using nothing artificial. Were even working on a special forest floor litter that will act as mulch. Another bonus is that well have shade during harvest in future years! Im working on the website today but will show you more of the new orchard site this weekend.
