22.01.2022 Impression Bay Coastcare Our 200 new plants this year have had a great start but are in danger of being swamped by some epic weed growth. So, we’re back to our monthly working bees, aimed at giving our new plants the best possible chance. And rumour has it there’ll be cake! Date: Thu 19-Nov... Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer). All welcome (unless you are feeling unwell or you’ve just come in from South Australia - in which case you'll be welcome again next month). See more

22.01.2022 Congratulations Tom Dunbabin!! Very well-deserved recognition.

19.01.2022 February’s Impression Bay working bee will be on this Thursday. The intent is to make it a monthly event on the 3rd Thursday of the month (which was actually last Thursday but we missed it). I think we’ll find the plants we put in (and the weeds) are thriving. We did handpull a lot of slender thistles (a declared weed) last time so if you have a decent pair of gloves I’d bring them along as I’m sure more will have popped up. And we still have an ongoing request to tackl...e a few radiata pine seedlings (and maybe some poplars) - so we may tackle them. Date: Thu Feb-27 Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer) As always, all welcome

15.01.2022 One more planting day working bee to get the last 50 plants in. It was a breeze last time with a few people there and great weather since then for our little trees. Hopefully we’ve got some dogwood in the mix this time (by special request) - they seem to love it there. Date: Thu 15-Oct Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer) We’ll be back to our normal monthly working bees after this o...ne. All welcome (but not if you are feeling unwell you’ll be sent home!). See more

14.01.2022 Parkers Beach to Impression Bay Coastcare walk - all welcome To celebrate many years of coastcare activities in Premaydena, Bob Graham is leading a coastal walk from Parkers Beach to the Premaydena shop on Sunday 22 March. The walk will view the weed control and planting undertaken at Parkers Beach, Ferguson Bay and Impression Bay. Local experts on geology, saltmarshes and shorebirds will be present to answer all of your questions. Meet at 12:30 at Parkers Beach for a picnic lunch (byo). The walk is at low tide - suitable footwear required (gum boots / tevas) you may get wet

13.01.2022 What a story! This sheep has been on the run since the 2013 Tasmanian bushfires ... and now she's ready for a trim.

12.01.2022 Hi folks Well that was a longer break than I anticipated but we have got the go ahead to start our working bees again so the next Impression Bay working bee will be on next week: Date: Thu 17-Sep Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer and others)... As with any event at the moment: please don't attend if you are feeling unwell we will be taking measures to avoid contact with each other and we’ll minimise the sharing of equipment so if you can bring your own gloves that will help The good news - most of the plants that have gone in have done really well. A few didn’t like standing in water for such a prolonged period but hopefully they’ll recover as the area dries out. We’ve got around 50 plants to go in on Thursday and there’s plenty of weeding around the recent plantings to do as some of them are getting a bit swamped by grass. It’s likely we’ll try and have a couple of extra sessions quite soon to get the rest of the plants in (another 100) whilst there’s still a bit of rain around. So if you can’t make Thursday don’t despair. As always, all welcome.

12.01.2022 Tasman Landcare Revegetation Project Tasman Landcare has allocated funding for 2000 trees this year for projects that: Enhance/restore native riparian vegetation Create linkages to reserves and remnant vegetation Extend and improve the condition of native vegetation... Plant a shelter belt Control erosion Rehabilitate and enhance vegetation impacted by fire There will be a maximum allocation of 200 per applicant. Unfortunately we don't have funding for guards, stakes and mats this year (there may be some recycled ones available if needed) and you'll have to plant the trees yourself. So, if you have a project that requires trees, please get in touch: [email protected] There is a simple application form to fill in to show your project meets the above criteria where your plants are going to go (if you've already done this you don't need to fill out another one). Once approved the plants can be picked up from Frog Hollow nursery. David and Zoe will be able to advise the best species for what you are doing if you’re unsure. See more

11.01.2022 The yearly Aussie Backyard Bird Count is on this week 19 to 25-Oct. It’s something everyone can take part in and it only takes 20 mins sitting in your backyard (or anywhere else you fancy). You just count and record every bird you see (or every bird you hear if you know your bird calls). To take part go to https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ and register, download the free app (which comes with a handy bird guide) and you're off. Early morning or evening is perfect - preferably when it's not blowing a gale or raining, (or both) but any time will do. Birdlife will then compile the results and we can see how our bird populations are going. And, if you don’t see many birds this year, maybe it’s time to plant a few more flowering natives for next year (wattles, banksias, melaleucas and bushpeas all work well). good luck

11.01.2022 More good news today, with four Tasmanian organisations receiving funding under the Smart Farms Small Grants program. University of Tasmania will increase resil...ience and building capacity in orchards through permanent soil cover; Tasmanian Agricultural Productivity Group will improve soil health with cover crops; Tasman Landcare Group Inc. is future-proofing agriculture with a real-time weather station and soil condition network; and Geeveston Community Centre Inc is regenerating natural resources and viability. Agriculture Minister David Littleproud MP said 113 projects nationally received grants of up to $50,000 from the third round of the Smart Farms Small Grants program. Australian agriculture has a long history of early adoption of innovation - the ingenuity of our farmers never ceases to amaze me, Minister Littleproud said. 11.01.2022 March's Impression Bay working bee will be on this Thursday (19-Mar). We'll be limiting numbers to a maximum of 499 so make sure you get there early (please don't attend if you are feeling unwell, we will also be taking measures to avoid contact with each other and won't be sharing tools). Parks have cleared away some more blackberry so we've got a bit of planting to do - and with rain on the way they should have a good start. Date: Thu Mar-19 Time: 9:30 until a bit later... Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer) As always, all welcome

08.01.2022 Just announced there are approx. 3000 grants of $5000 available from the Tasmanian Government to assist small businesses to recover from the impact of COVID 19. It's aimed at those particularly affected by border closures (lack of visitors), public health restrictions, exporters and those that are reliant on or part of impacted supply chains - which would cover a lot of small businesses Details below. https://www.business.tas.gov.au//covid-19_small_business_s

08.01.2022 Impression Bay working bee - January (our first for the new decade) There's been a surprising amount of weed growth on the site despite the lack of rain so we'll need to hunt for the plants we've put in (which I'm sure will still be going well). And we have an ongoing request to tackle a few radiata pine seedlings (and maybe some poplars) that are cropping up.... Date: Wed Jan-22 Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer) As always, everyone’s welcome.

05.01.2022 Great Field Day and AGM on Saturday. Big thanks to Bill and Guy for their presentations and also to the numerous helpers.

05.01.2022 Hello Coastcarer folk past and present UTAS are doing research aimed at helping coastcare groups achieve their goals. Below is a brief survey aimed at finding out what the barriers are (lack of time / money / people and other stuff) that hold coastcare groups back. The survey is here: https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSfSOhHcZbEjctATw/viewform... It will take about 10-15 minutes and is open until 30 April 2020 - but you may as well do it now.... See more

04.01.2022 Impression Bay working bee - Nov There's been lots of growth over the last month so there’ll be a fair bit to do to keep the plants we want from getting crowded out by the ones we don't. And we have a rollover request to tackle a few radiata pine seedlings (and maybe some poplars) that are cropping up so we can get onto that too. The patch of blackberry that Parks kindly brushcut for us has been treated and looks like its on the way out. (And I believe there’ll be tea and ca...ke afterwards if you need more of an incentive to turn up) Date: Thu Nov-14 Time: 9:30 until a bit later Place: opposite the Premaydena shop (by the saltmarsh sign please leave some room for the trailer) As always, everyone’s welcome.
