23.01.2022 WORKING HARD AND SMARTER TasNetworks is pleased that its Operating Model Improvement Program (OMIP) has won National Transformation Project of the Year at the 2020 Project Management Achievement Awards. OMIP’s been all about working smarter and more efficiently for Tasmanians. That includes things like fixing power outages more quickly, and improving customer service.... The award win tallies with our own data for 2019-20, which shows our Net Promoter Scores above target and safety performance improving under OMIP. We’ve also helped ease the cost of electricity. The network charges faced by typical residential and small business customers fell by 3.8 per cent in 2019-20 to the same level, in real terms, as they were in 2009-10. We’ll keep working hard to deliver the best service possible for Tasmanians. https://www.aipm.com.au//2020-project-management-achieveme

20.01.2022 WACKY WEDNESDAY WATTAGE In a rare example of water and electricity mixing well The bill of a platypus is covered in about 40,000 electroreceptors.... Like a submarine using sonar, they’re the only mammal in the world to use electroreception to navigate underwater and detect prey. The platypus’s quick head movements help them scan outwards and downwards in their dark, wet environment, while keeping their eyes, ears and nostrils closed (like many of us at primary school swimming carnivals).

19.01.2022 FUN FRIDAY FACEBOOK FACT On this windy Tassie day, did you know? Windmills (and therefore, in effect, wind energy) have been used since about 2000 BC. They were first developed in Persia and China.... Modern windmills (as distinct from energy-generating turbines) are most commonly associated with the Netherlands. There are more than 1,000 windmills in Holland, mostly still used for drainage or grinding. They're also a tourist attraction. On the second Saturday in May, Holland holds ‘National Mill Day’, where about 600 windmills and watermills open to visitors.

17.01.2022 WACKY WEDNESDAY WATTAGE It’s a warm one across Tasmania, as summer looks to have properly started. And heat happens to be a key form of energy discovered by James Prescott Joule in 1847.... Joule was experimenting with liquids, and found that just agitating the fluids was enough to increase their temperature. He then managed to turn that ‘mechanical’ energy into thermal energy. Joule became one of history’s most famous energy scientists, including having a unit of heat energy named after him. He also happened to be an avid beer brewer. He knew a lot about heat and plenty about one of heat’s best antidotes
