25.01.2022 When three highly skilled creatives collaborate.... something very special and exciting will emerge! Each year our partner Moonah Arts Centre generously provides rehearsal/development time and space to selected artists from the Tasmania Performs Artist Residency held at Tarraleah the previous year. This year three fabulous artists have been selected: Robert Jarman, Hannah Vermeulen and Hera Pixie Gemini Direen. And they've chosen to use this opportunity to work collaborativel...y and support each other. Really looking forward to seeing the outcomes of this creative development process! The Tasmania Performs Artist Residency is supported by Elise Archer MP, Minister for the Arts, Arts Tasmania and Tarraleah Estate - Cottages, Accommodation & Events. Tasmania Performs is part of Performing Lines.
24.01.2022 Thanks heaps for the shout out! Tasmanian
23.01.2022 RATTLE is a new queer play written by Hera Direen, about radical self care and the intersectionality of care and sexuality. Auditions are being held on 5 & 6 Dec for the following roles for this Hobart production: SAMMY - MAN between 20 and 30. Bit of a dick head, gamer, straight frat boy. EYVE - NON-BINARY between 18 and 25. Naive but provocative. ALICE - WOMAN between 25 and 35. One of the lads, with a fickle conscience.... (Although roles are gendered, people auditioning may be of any gender or sex that does not align with the gender of the characters.) For more information or to book an audition please email Hera at [email protected] Performers will participate in a developmental weekend (Jan 2021) on a volunteer basis, and a performance season (late 2021, dates to be announced) for cut of profit.
22.01.2022 Rehearsals are going really well for the Tasmania Performs production, Hide The Dog, co-written by Nathan Maynard (palawa) and Jamie McCaskill (Mori). Everyone's workin' hard/havin' fun! Look out for a story later this week in The Mercury. Thanks to The Old Nick Company for the great venue.
21.01.2022 It’s definitely time to brag! We’re absolutely thrilled that the World Premiere Season of Hide The Dog, co-written by Nathan Maynard (pakana) and Jamie McCaskill (Mori), will be part of the Sydney Festival (1317 Jan) and Ten Days on the Island (1921 March). Nathan explains the beginning of the project: ‘Jamie and I spent time together at the Tasmania Performs annual residency at Tarraleah and after a blossoming bromance, we decided to we wanted to collaborate. We shared s...tories from our respective cultures and Jamie was really intrigued by the Tasmanian Tiger and I’ve always wanted to write something about the Tasmanian Tiger that actually celebrated the strength and continuation of palawa culture. The plot formed organically and very quickly. Two kids from different cultures discover a Tassie tiger and decide to save it by hiding it in Aotearoa/NZ. But obviously there’s more to the story than what’s on the surface. This Tasmania Performs production is a truly trans-Tasman creation, bringing together First Nation performers and creatives in this celebration of adventure, friendship and the power of culture. All achieved in the midst of a pandemic with artists going through quarantine multiple times to bring the story to the stage. Hide the Dog has been assisted by Elise Archer MP, Minister for the Arts, through Arts Tasmania, and by the Australian Government’s Major Festivals Initiative, managed by the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, in association with the Confederation of Australian International Arts Festivals Inc., commissioned by Brisbane Festival, Rising, Ten Days on the Island, Sydney Festival and also Creative New Zealand. 03.01.2022 Looking after our mental health and the mental health of those we work with is so very important, especially at the moment. Thanks to support from the Minister for the Arts, Elise Archer MP through Arts Tasmania, Tasmania Performs has presented two workshops this week (Hobart and Launceston) for members of the performing arts sector. Clare Pearson (pictured here) from OzHelp Tasmania (a program of Lifeline Tasmania) provided extremely valuable training and information on issues related to mental health and/or mental illness. Thanks to Theatre North for venue support in Launceston. Let's look after ourselves and each other.
03.01.2022 Survey EXTENDED to 30 Aug. Your chance to contribute to a greater understanding of the impact of Covid on our sector. Thanks to Arts Tasmania and University of Tasmania for this opportunity.
02.01.2022 One of our key roles is to identify and develop relationships with performing artists at critical points in their careers. We're very excited to be currently working with several emerging indigenous artists and, with assistance from Elise Archer MP Minister for the Arts through Arts Tasmania, setting them up with exceptional mentoring opportunities. One of these artists is Jamie Graham: a trawlwoolway pakana, an environmental activist, a Marine and Antarctic Science student a...nd an educator. Jamie has travelled down many paths, but all have a singular theme, which is his responsibility to country. Jamie is aiming to use western and southern science, activism and art, tied together with ancestral understanding, to produce work that will challenge and change, grow and heal. He is currently working with his mentor, Peter Oldham, a highly experienced film maker and videographer who has an extensive background in working in the performing arts. Together they are exploring new skills that will contribute to the development of Jamie's work in the future.

01.01.2022 We are so excited that rehearsals are starting this week in Hobart for Hide The Dog, co-written by Nathan Maynard (palawa) and Jamie McCaskill (Mori). Three of our performers recently arrived in Hobart, Melodie Reynolds-Diarra from WA (who has just found out she won’t need to quarantine on return to WA!), Zac Martin from Auckland (while his luggage took a detour to Nowra, NSW) and Reuben Butler from Wellington, NZ. We are so fortunate that the timing of borders opening to N...ew Zealand has allowed these talented Mori artists to travel and make this cross-cultural work possible. lutruwita’s incredible arts community leader Sinsa Jo Mansell invited these new arrivals to spend time on country at piyura kitna/Risdon Cove, to hear the stories about this Island’s past and also the incredible strength and survival of the palawa people and their connection to culture. The chance to breathe and connect with country and community was greatly appreciated. As a non-First Nation Company, given the trust to produce First Nation work, Tasmania Performs is always learning. People like Sinsa, who share their knowledge and continually re-tell stories of deep grief with such generosity, astound us with their strength and resilience. This Tasmania Performs Production is supported by Elise Archer MP, Minister for the Arts, through Arts Tasmania, and by the Australian Government’s Major Festivals Initiative, managed by the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, in association with the Confederation of Australian International Arts Festivals Inc.
01.01.2022 On 30 Sept please show your support for the wonderful tech teams who make events, shows, exhibitions and lots more happen. Without them there would be literally 'nothing to see, nothing to hear'.
