24.01.2022 PRODUCER PROFILE | Matt Tack & Coreen Ung Our Mates Farm Matt & Coreens farming story began with a taste of bacon at a farmers market in the heart of London. A taste that took them back to when we were kids, to what food tasted like then (like eating bright colours when other food was monochrome). They followed the journey of that bacon, and the other food they were eating, growing more and learning more. They didnt know much about farming, they just knew they wanted to... grow great tasting food and connect people to the place it was grown. Their journey eventually brought them to a neglected apple orchard in the Huon Valley. After much perseverance, Our Mates Farm now successfully grow organic apples, beef, lamb and pork packed full of flavour. #ourmatesfarm

10.01.2022 Stop Throwing Away Your Eggshells... Eggshells are natures suit of armor, an excellent source of calcium and minerals, and can be reused in many ways. Use as a calcium rich soil additive. Eggshell is a natural source of calcium with the shell made almost entirely from calcium carbonate.... Eggshells provide further benefits such as enhanced aeration when added directly into the soil. It is also claimed that eggshells act as a slug deterrent because of the sharp surface they create for the pests. If you fancy being creative, half shells can be used as starter pots for seedlings providing them with calcium benefits from the very start. Whatever the use, the general advice for using eggshells on the garden is to wash, dry and grind and be prepared for them to take a while to breakdown.

05.01.2022 The solutions are at hand for agriculture to become a driving force in the regeneration of landscapes, waterways and biodiversity, while sequestering carbon and actively reversing climate change. There are many good reasons to support regenerative agriculture but the most significant is as a response to the climate emergency. The food system contributes up to 37% of TOTAL greenhouse emissions. When farmers receive a fair price for food, they have more opportunity to shift pra...ctices and undertake regenerative methods. It's all apart of the changes we are working to achieve in our local food system.

04.01.2022 Australias food system, like the food system globally, is dominated by a handful of corporate players. Private control of agriculture, food processing and retailing means that decisions about what food is processed, how it is processed and where it is sold are driven by profits, all at the expense of our needs and the environment. Changing our food system is a big and complicated issue. But changing your own relationship to food is more easily addressed. What you buy is the ...key. Buy seasonal Tasmanian produce, from farmers who use the land conscientiously and ecologically, whenever possible! And why not grow some of your own food? You wont regret it.

02.01.2022 It may seem like common sense... but diversity is the answer! Whether we are talking diet, communities or agriculture, it just works. "Different species create a dynamic, networked ecosystem that together makes everything healthier and stronger" (Dalrymple & Hillard, 2020). But the loss of species diversity in modern agriculture is the norm. The plant and animal species grown have been reduced dramatically since industrialisation of agriculture.... While monoculture systems provide us with amazing beauty (such as this almond orchard they offer only short term benefits, but it's not sustainable. As soon as you narrow species diversity, things start to go wrong and that's when farmers need to start applying... water, fertiliser, pesticides, antibiotics, etc. rather than letting the ecosystem work as it should. The future of agriculture will come from people, not technologyfrom a new generation of farmers who embrace small-scale, ecological, nourishing farming techniques.

02.01.2022 Celebrating World Lion Day... Lions mane mushrooms, also known as hou tou gu or yamabushitake, are large, white, shaggy mushrooms that resemble a lions mane as they grow. Lions mane mushrooms can be enjoyed raw, cooked, dried or steeped as a tea. Their extracts often used in over-the-counter health supplements.... Many describe their flavour as seafood-like, often comparing it to crab or lobster. Why not give some a try? Our TPC producer Jordon from #hillwoodfreshfoodco grows these beauties, so watch out for them.

01.01.2022 WHO WILL FEED US? On top of an unpredictable climate, the rise in food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much concern. One of the biggest concerns is the resilience of the industrial food chain. We are told the industrial food chain feeds the world. But the truth is, peasant (small-scale) farms currently feed 70 percent of humanity, using less than 25 percent of the worlds agricultural land using less resources and creating less waste.... Maybe bigger isnt better? Love local. Love small producers.
