13.01.2022 Never underestimate the power of a black cockatoo! Paul said it only took two birds 15 to 20 minutes to rip apart two trees like this one in Kedron. They didn...'t stop until they reached a small hollow in the centre of the trunk. "It was amazing to watch." Have you witnessed any impressive cockatoo destruction in your suburb? : Paul Petersen

04.01.2022 Stafford State School, 314 Stafford Road, Stafford. Today we are look at Stafford State School as it was when it was first constructed. This building was origin...ally built in 1948 to provide primary education for children in the Stafford district. The area of Stafford dates back to 1886 when it was originally called Happy Valley. In that year a simple timber building was constructed along with a timber residence in nearby Collier Street. Stafford is one of only a few locations in Queensland where the suburb takes its name from the name given to the local school. One other such suburb named after the local school was Coorparoo. By 1940 a tram line was constructed connecting this area to Red Hill, then a housing commission estate was established during World War II. By 1947 there was a need for a new school, so 12 acres of land was purchased along Stafford Road from John Smith for the purpose of constructing a new school. During WWII specialised physical education teacher training had commenced in 1941, with the first batch of graduates employed under the Organiser of Physical Education in 1944. That same year the Director General of Education called for the enlarging of existing school grounds or acquisition of new sites to accomodate facilities for field games. The Department of Public Instruction began purchasing sites which allowed adequate space to be dedicated to physical activity. As a result, this school had two full playing ovals which accommodated for cricket, football, baseball, vigaro, hockey and athletics. It also had a swimming pool and grandstand added at a later stage. In early May 1947 there were reports indicating that many parents did not allow their children to attend the former school, which was condemned 12 years prior. During wet weather students had to shelter under the low classrooms to eat their meals. It was also suggested that many children were instead being sent to be schooled in Wilston, Wooloowin and Windsor. The main school building was designed by Frederick Thomas Warren of the Architectural Branch of the Queensland Department of Public Works. Construction appears to have commenced in May 1947 and was to consist of 10 classrooms, head teachers room, mens and woman’s staff rooms, libraries, cloak rooms, health services room and store rooms. This all appears to have been completed at a cost of 35,500. Construction of the first stage was completed in 1948 and officially opened in January 1949 at a cost of 37,000. The school appears to have been able to accomodate 400 pupils at the time, thought the full design once completed would allow for 600 students. In May 1953 it was revealed that excavations had been completed for the extension to the 1948 building, which was costing 27,600. Once completed this section would house six new classrooms and an under school play area. In June 1954 Stafford State School began fund raising with the goal to raise 4,000 for the construction of a swimming pool. The cost of the pool was reported to be 8,000 and the final 4,000 would be funded by the Queensland Government. At the time of this school had enrolments of 1,150, with the numbers increasing every year. In the 1960s the population of the school grew as high as 1,500. The extension appears to have been completed to the original design in 1955, though I am unsure if the swimming pool was completed at this stage. In 2011 the school celebrated its 125th anniversary. The school had a population of 271 in 2017, dropping to 264 in 2018. Fast forward to 2020 the school appears to have a population of 275. The school appears to have educated actor Geoffrey Rush, former captain of the Queensland Bulls Stuart Law and Mitchell Hard of the Western Bulldogs. **The time and effort put towards compiling these articles are unpaid.
