21.01.2022 In recognition of NAIDOC week, we are reflecting on the rich history - past and present - of Tasmania's Indigenous community in fishing and seafood. The following is 2 of 2 excerpts we're sharing this week from our booklet 'An Oral History of the Tasmanian Seafood Industry - Volume 2: South'. Bryan Denny is a modern day, proud indigenous commercial fisher who has not lost sight of his ancestor’s respect for and reliance on the sea. ‘I’ve always been proud of my indigenous he...ritage. My ancestors actually farmed the ocean. There’s middens around the west coast that are 50 metres high, they look just like sand dunes from a distance’. ‘Sea Country was a prime source of food for indigenous mobs 1000’s of years ago and they looked after it for 40 odd thousand years’. ‘I actually look at myself as one of those indigenous custodians of Sea Country. I encourage everyone to take a bit of care and responsibility, and actually look after the fish, put the undersized ones back on the bottom properly and treat them with care’. ‘To me it is not a financial thing, it’s because I love being on and under the water’. This year’s Working on Water program will be hosted online due to the coronavirus - and there’s still plenty of opportunity to engage with people working across the seafood industry. Students will complete ~2 hours of content in the form of short videos and quizzes, and then attend live webinar...s with industry members. The video and quiz content explores the seafood and marine resource industry in four sections: marine science and research, marine resource management, seafood industry, and training and transferable skills. During the webinars, students can ask people working in the industry questions about their current roles, how they got there, and what skills and qualifications have been useful in their pathway.

09.01.2022 The TSIC Working on Water school program would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. This year's program was hosted online, with video and quiz content complemented by a live industry webinar. Students went on a virtual tour of a Huon Aquaculture ocean trout hatchery with Matt Jones (Seafood and Maritime Training - SMT), learned about seafood training opportunities from Shane Gillie (SMT), and heard from Petuna Aquaculture Fish Health Manager Phillipa Sims and ...Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS research fellow David Moreno. Thanks to Seafood and Maritime Training, two students were awarded Coxswain 2 (NC) scholarships, giving them a real head start in their careers. The WoW program introduces students to the diverse career pathways available in our industry, and gives them an understanding of how our industry operates. The support and time that our sponsors and contributors give helps shape the future of our industry.

01.01.2022 In August 2020, the Tasmanian Commercial Divers Association were part of a collaborative effort between the Handfish Conservation Project and Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies - IMAS, working alongside DPIPWE to tackle one of the key issues threatening red handfish populations: habitat loss through urchin overgrazing. A team of TCDA divers removed an incredible 1276 kg (almost 17000 native urchins) across two sites where handfish were subsequently released. Although not all the urchins were of harvest quality, TCDA President Renison Bell commented that contributing to a good cause and helping red handfish populations was worth their effort.
