05.01.2022 Anglers, lets go fishing was the trigger for a wild dash to start the annual Tuna Club of Tasmanias 26th Australian Bluefin Championship competition at the b...eautiful Eagle Hawk Neck in Tassies rugged south east. Seventy boats lined up for the standing start eagerly awaiting the checkered flag to drop, yet these werent race boats, instead they were a myriad of sportsfishing weapons varying in size from 4.5 metre tiller steer tinnies right through to large floating Gin palaces. We lined up in the all new Surtees 700 Gamefisher Hard Top with a gutsy Evinrude ETEC 250HO powerplant. The latest trends in sportsfishing muscle are developing high speed offshore capable hulls that are comfortable with big horsepower. Our engines are powerhouses of modern engineering that achieve enormous power to weight ratios combined with frugal fuel consumption making long offshore dashes an everyday event. There were trailerboats of every size, material and make in contention. Stabis lined up, next to Signatures, Quinnies with Crushers, Stessls with Savages, Caribbeans with Cruises and Straiters next to Sonairs. There were new boats and old, repowers and refits, and even a Stabi with a length enhancement. We were well prepared for the race. Tassies Surtees dealer Hadley Deegan, a second generation boating guru took the wheel and arranged the load. We were not only carrying all the equipment of a fully equipped game fishing outfit but also the four large heffalumps (me included) that formed his crew loosely described as ballast. I got the navigators position with local identities from Team Deegan/Penn/Simrad completing the crew. Hooch, Mozza and Pete shuffled around in the centre and rear adjusting the balance as we drove. The new Evinrude RX4 prop bit hard from the exhilarating start right through to the flying finish as Hadley expertly negotiated the head on swell. Its fair to say that we spent as much time flying out of the water as we did in it and the new 7 metre deep V well and truly exceeded the dreams of my wildest imagination. Not once did we hit hard; and not once did the hull moan or creak as is common for many competitors alloy offerings. A few years back I made the statement that 2013 was the year that premium aluminium hulls actually performed as well, if not better than their heavier fibreglass counterparts and Im delighted to now declare that the 700 Surtees Gamefisher has taken the bull by the horns by going even better again. This boat is simply a weapon! The further we travelled deep into the southern ocean on our way to the Hippolytes the rougher it got as the wind and swell gained strength as we left the protection of Tasman Island to the south. Visiting the Hippolyte was one more tick on my lifes bucket list but I never expected to be travelling to it in a white knuckled rampage locked into the passenger position in this airborne Surtees speedster. The main Hippo is a granite monolith rising over a hundred metres from sea level and yet another 100 metres to its foundations on the ocean floor directly below. It is a spectacular sight that remains indelibly stamped in my brain, yet its grandeur is somewhat diminished by the magnificence of the Tassie coastline itself. We had a fast start from a good position which is an essential element in any race. Hadley was quick off the mark as he planted the throttles and the big V6 ETEC roared into action. Its note hasnt quite the balls of a big V8, but rather the sporty confidence of highly tuned V6 performance. I braced myself into the passenger slot with white knuckles on the Jesus bar and flexed off my knees as the rodeo ride erupted. Pete took centre spot becoming a thankful air cushion between Hadley and I while Piss and Wind (alias Mozza and Hooch) played trim tabs as they dangled from the strong handrails of the hardtop. It later dawned on me that our Surtees Gamefisher steed probably resembled the Flying Nun with its big Simrad Halo radar aerial prone atop the very welcome hardtop enclosure as we lept from peak to peak out front of the seventy strong contenders in our wake. It is most important to get a good start in any race but clean water is vital in the briny. The large safety glass windows allowed exceptional vision forward and to both sides as we kept an eye on close contenders to the sides. The drivers wiper actually had very little consequence as the hull flew over most of the slop and when gravity did take its inevitable course the big soft hull pushed the deluge aside like Moses parting the Red Sea. Hadley drove like a man possessed but with the full control that comes from long experience behind the wheel. He read the sea perfectly as the rest of us hooted and hollered at the thrill. I have been amazed with the instantaneous control of the new ETECs, not only in with instant and constant acceleration throughout the rev range, but the snappy response when you need to back off quickly to mount a larger than usual peak with the inevitable hole that follows. The control is reminiscent of breaking allowing you to hold onto max speed longer and back off later giving even more edge through precise control. There was more than one heart a pounding as we delved deeper into the race and it was clear within a few kilometres that we had left most challengers trailing, but we never backed off. We called the finish line as we neared the Hippo and breathless celebration began like a bunch of teenagers recounting our first sexual experience. (with company that is:) This was Hadleys third consecutive win in the Race to the Rock and a proud moment for us all. There were surprisingly few bruises and no breakages, but the thrill may have taken a few years off our lives! The Surtees 700 Gamefisher was simply outstanding the 250 ETEC thrilling, the surroundings enthralling and the companionship heartwarming. Some say we had an unfair advantage! Then came the serious job of going fishing..
