16.01.2022 Let’s get excited! Two amazing and informative events are about to hit Tasmania’s shores, with a focus on nature and health. The Australian Association for Bush... Adventure Therapy Inc. (AABAT) National Forum 2020: Healthy Country Healthy People (1-3 May, Dover) and the Nature & Health - Research, Practice and Policy Symposium (29-30 April, Hobart) are just weeks away and lutruwita/Tasmania is ready and waiting for you! These AABAT events are an opportunity to connect with like-minded people who work under the broad umbrella of Bush Adventure Therapy - practitioners, researchers, students, professionals and anyone who is interested in the use of the outdoors and adventure for therapeutic outcomes. With a focus on facilitating experiential learning and conversational, generative connections, a special feature of the programs are the contribution and participation of local cultural elders inviting us all to consider BAT practices through the lens of representatives of the oldest continuous culture on the planet. AABAT National Forum 2020 essentially is presented as a two-part package (a forum and a pre-forum symposium) providing a unique opportunity to introduce and extend your understanding and experience of the interdependent relationship of the natural world and human health. AABAT NATIONAL FORUM 2020 (1-3 MAY, DOVER) will focus on creating an active learning space and providing Experiences, Conversations and Inspirations for those interested in, new to, or working in the field of Bush Adventure Therapy (BAT). Led by Tasmanian Aboriginal and First people, attendees can expect a culturally rich and participatory learning environment. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Far South Wilderness Camp near Dover (1.5 hours south of Hobart), you’ll be sure to experience BAT practice in action. Presenters are encouraged to embrace interactive and immersive style workshops at this year’s AABAT Forum! As with all AABAT forums there will be a number of fantastic guest speakers including local aboriginal mob welcoming us, sharing stories and providing their perspectives on the theme Healthy Country, Healthy People’, including elder Aunty Verna Nichols, Luke Mabb and Anthony King. Health and wellbeing perspectives from key individuals working across the health sector in Australia and those working within the BAT field will also be presented, and so far we have Judy Atkinson, Ben Knowles and Cathryn Carpenter presenting. NATURE & HEALTH RESEARCH, PRACTICE AND POLICY SYMPOSIUM (29-30 APRIL, HOBART) This inaugural event will be hosted in central Hobart, at communal creation hub LongHouse. Day one is set to be opened by the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Cr Anna Reynolds, followed by a stimulating line-up of speakers designed to explore the intersection between human health, environmental health and Aboriginal/First Nations approaches. Day two of the Symposium will showcase leading BAT research, practice and innovation alongside presentations from proponents of other evidence-informed nature-based health interventions and explore the establishment of a consortium of Outdoor Healthcare providers set to engage with government. If you register for the symposium at the same time as the forum, you will receive a 50% discount on the symposium registration, meaning you only pay $100 rather than $200). At the symposium so far we are thrilled and looking forward to welcoming and hearing from inspirational speakers Judy Atkinson, Ben Rea, Glenn Woods, and Kara Spence. Wondering which event to attend? We recommend that you think about what you would hope to gain from attending either event, and encourage you to ponder the possibility of attending both - the Forum for deeper immersion into BAT practices and the BAT community, and the Symposium for high-level research, practice and innovation. Let us put it this way - you might choose to attend the Forum for relationships, community and practice, and the Symposium for ideas, innovations and evidence. Can’t choose? Come to both. People who register for both are eligible for a significant discount as above. We hope to see you there! Visit: www.forum-2020.aabat.org.au/
