24.01.2022 Raspberries on the go again. Thank goodness the sun has come out and the rain has backed up. Drop in or ring to get some raspberries this Christmas. Blackberries and cherries also available. Apricots about a week away. Shop open every day.

23.01.2022 New post added Blackcurrantshttps://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/blackcurrants/In 2014 we started selling black currants on line. Our entre into this market was heavily supported by Farmhousedirect and Australia Post. The following is the article that was written at that time. we have learnt a lot since that time about packaging and handling and hope we will have

23.01.2022 New post added Summer Joys and Woes`https://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/summerwoes/It has been an interesting summer for us. Well that is one way of describing it. Certainly the driest year in the 26 years we have been settled in Tasmania, We have been continually irrigating our row crops with mixed results. It is very difficult wetting sandy soil. The more you water the more likely you are to remove the nutrients that the plant needs. With rainfall the mechanism is different an...d the nutrients outside the rootzone can migrate back to the plant. We have had a couple of showers one of 30mm and the improvement in growth for the strawberries was impressive. But alas that was some time ago and now it is back to the dry conditions. The main orchard is some distance away from the farmhouse and much higher. It is on a north facing slope on sandy soil with hard pan less the a metre below the surface. Very poor soil obvious by the lack of vegetation outside the paddock. Even the bracken is having a hard time this year. Gums trees have also been dying. But inside the paddock we grow apricots, plums, citrus and other trees. The citrus have really struggled with many dying. These are shallow rooted trees and thus much more susceptible to drought. A different story for the apricots. Picked a couple of tons this year versus a negligible pick last year. Quality was very good too. Apricots unlike citrus have a deep root structure as they obviously liked these harsh conditions. There were so many that at least 8 tonnes were left and dropped to the ground.

23.01.2022 Open for takeaway coffee weekends only. Why not get a pick me up when you get your fruit. . However super special in PYO granny smith apples as we have too many. $2/kg for box loads (12kg). These will keep for a long time in cool spot .

22.01.2022 New post added Hot- Hot-Hothttps://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/hot-hot-hot/The weather is starting to cool off. Still night last night and quite cool. I had permission for a control burnoff and was blessed with the expert help of the Scamander Fire Brigade. It is still very dry here and burnoffs in thickly forested areas with a lot of undergrowth and fallen dead trees from the 2006 bushfire can lead to some very interesting times if things get out of control. All went well unt...il the next day. I started to clean up unburnt logs and fallen branches , also some stumps were alight and I keep these going. Later I went to pick some fruit and was soon visited by a very worried wife. The fire had started up again on the fence line as a result of strong winds and was moving fast. Lots of smoke making it look worse than it was. Never the less it is a warning that although we should be dong burnoffs at this time of year we shouldn't relax our vigilance until the fire is completely out.

21.01.2022 Tasmanian East Coast residents are encouraged to prepare their properties for possible heavy rainfall and predicted thunderstorms this weekend. The Bureau of Me...teorology has advised the SES that predicted heavy rainfall is highly possible this weekend - and is expected to impact the East Coast in a line from Swansea to Eddystone Point. Lower rainfall totals are expected to fall in the North and North West on Saturday and Sunday. "This rain event is expected to start on Friday afternoon and move away overnight Sunday, said SES Acting Regional Manager North, Michael D’Alton. We are working closely with the BOM to monitor the weather situation, which is difficult to predict in terms of the location that will be most impacted. While we’re preparing to assist community members in need of assistance, we would ask people to be prepare themselves for the hazards associated with heavy rainfall, flash flooding and thunderstorms. We ask farmers on the Northern river systems to move stock and farming equipment from low lying areas to high ground. Some rivers, notably the South Esk River are forecast to flood to minor or moderate levels. SES advises people to: Ensure drains and gutters are clear of debris and running freely Never drive, walk, swim or cycle through flood waters Never play near floodwaters, drains or culverts Beware of fallen trees and power lines Take care when driving Be prepared in case of power outages and report outages to TasNetworks on 132 004 Keep up to date with the latest weather warnings at www.bom.gov.au/tas Check that family and neighbours are aware of any warnings Visit www.ses.tas.gov.au for further preparation advice For road closures: www.police.tas.gov.au Listen to ABC Local Radio for updates in an emergency For flood and storm assistance call SES on 132 500 In a life threatening emergency call Triple Zero (000) Remember, preparedness is a shared responsibility.

21.01.2022 New post added Apples- Pears and Morehttps://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/apples-pears-and-more/{It is now March 17 and still no sign of rain. 16.01.2022 New post : Australia's Housing Crisis{ Everyone needs a roof over their head. No one should have to sleep rough in Australia. Public housing is always going to be needed. Many people are not equipped or happen to be in a locality where housing costs are prohibitively expensive. It is really unfortunate as these people often never have the opportunity to be independent and develop a capital base for themselves. ... high density apartments not the answer for every one In many country areas the cost of land can be minimal . For example where we live land is plentiful. However having said this, housing hasn't taken off as a way for people on a budget to get a house for themselves. Some time ago I proposed a mechanism whereby housing could be made more affordable for people living in rural communities. The initial reaction of our council was favorable however somewhere along the way Council became cautious or reluctant to step off into the unknown. Taking the initiative even on a trial basis is not something that Council's are likely to participate in. So many things like this really rely on someone else doing it first ( whether it be bike trails, walking tracks or anything.) I grew up in a outer suburb of Sydney. Many people had to build a home for their families. It was not uncommon and as such people soon had a home. (the movie "There a Weird Mob" encapsulates this theme). Often people worked together and maybe built in stages. It is not overly difficult to comprehend how people built their own security without being overly indebted to anyone. Somewhere along the way to the present time the situation about housing has completely changed. To the point now that it is regarded as almost madness to go it alone and this is not helped by the regulatory madness that surrounds the building process. Strange as it may seem we are quite prepared to look at people living in shelters or worse rather than giving them a chance to do something for themselves. a great experience and confidence builder My proposal hasn't really changed. But the mindset of our controllers must change. Ways have to be trialled which give younger people a proper place in our society. I am from that older generation. Yes you could say we have seen it all. We know what is right and so on. But that's not the way the world works. Experimentation has risks but making real housing opportunities in my opinion is a risk worth taking. https://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/australias-housing-crisis/

16.01.2022 Early birds can still get raspberries but very limited this year due to birds even though we have put netting up. Now picking Cox's orange pippin apples. Best crop of this variety we have ever had. Funny when you think how sparse our yield has been with other varieties. As well as lots of cooking to replenish our jam stocks I also took time out to make the Crostata that I talked about the other day.Turned out pretty good.(if I may say so myself). For the jam I used some plum powidhl (plum tar) that I made last year using prune d'argent plums instead of blood plums. The pie crust uses some almond flour and the top layer was basically an apple crumble crust.

16.01.2022 Sorry about the sign at the junction of Upper Scamander Road (our street) with the Tasman Highway. It was vandalized some time ago and we are in the process of replacing it. We are open for great apples mainly pink lady and granny smith from $2 /kg. Jams and other goodies always available.

15.01.2022 Now selling just picked fruit. Blood plums (2 Varieties), nashi pears, peaches, white nectarines, apples and peaches. Open every day except starting this week Tuesday and Wednesday. Most fruits now $5/kg or $10/3kg lots ordered. European pears Williams and Buerre Bosse now picked. Fruit varieties can be mixed to make 3kg. If you want real quality fruit on the East Coast buy from your local producers.

15.01.2022 The big apple - no this is not a disaster area. Mutsu's are a japanese apple. Yellowy green somewhat like a Granny smith but generally much bigger and very fruity and scrumptious. Also many other apples from $30/12kg or $35 for mixed lots. Also pears and nashi and I last box of prune d'agen. Why not drop in and stock up with your favourites and pick up some jams. We are also running a special on jams - 6 of our best berry jams -in the big round jars just in a gift box and take away coffee available too this weekend. Open every day 11am to 3pm.

14.01.2022 New post : Bushfires - Scamander\{ It is definitely looking like a hot summer. We at Eureka Farm have done a lot of work with back burning around our house. However I don't think their is a limit to how prepared you have to be especially when you are surrounded by State Forest.... Yesterday we had a first bushfire in the area when a bushfire started in the Scamander Sanctuary. The brigades from Scamander, St. Helens, Falmouth and St. Marys worked together with support with water bombing from a helicopter. These guys performed back burns as the fire approached houses in Dune Street. The tea tree was very dry and it was easy to see how quickly a fire can start when you saw the bush catch fire from the back burns. The teams worked together very well and should be congratulated on their efforts. https://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/bushfires-scamander/ See more

10.01.2022 Lots o f fruit this year. Apricots and cherries have been fabulous. Berries also good although there are less this year because staving kangaroos have been eating the foliage. A severe drought can make life difficult. Good news is that we have opened our accommodation. Our original home (3 bedrooms) and Aimee's bungalow are now available for holiday rental. Two days minimum stay. It is a good opportunity for families to see what happens on a fruit farm. The bonus is we are close to some of Australia's best beaches and national parks. https://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/farm-house-accommodation/

06.01.2022 all of you may be wondering how a couple of old fogies meaning Ann and myself(72 years old) can keep going. We are constantly asked what is our retirement plan. Well to be honest we never had one but lately we have started given some thought to it. We think that we can continue for one more year winding down some of the less obvious and non remunerative sections of the farm. We would love to know if there are others out there who would love to take on a project such as this.... We still see great opportunities for an enthusiastic family. However another possibility is for us to continue to stay here operate our shop with our best products and selling off the unused section of our land. This is not the land that is visible in the photos and hence we would retain our raspberries and cherries, some other trees and obviously our dam which is crucial to growing in these potentially drought stricken years. Love to hear your comments on this or other topics. Maybe how to live longer- hah! Hah! See more

06.01.2022 Our society has reduced shopping for groceries to a one stop shop in cities as well as rural areas. We hardly see butchers or vegie shops anywhere anymore. We are told to shop local but the options are very limited for the above reasons. The same applies to us growers where the option to supply local shops has also diminished. You have to be big to gain the attention of the Coles and Woollies of this world. What can we do about it? Your comments would be appreciated.

05.01.2022 We now open for great desserts, coffee and ice cream on Sundays only. Jams , chutneys ,sauces , honey available on other days. From middle November we will have fresh fruits and then we will be open 4 days ( this is our present plan) . In the Summer months open Friday to Monday.

05.01.2022 New post added Horticultural Challengeshttps://eurekafarm.com.au/bloghh/horticultural-challenges/In my last post I talked about the particular summer we have been having. So hot and practically no rain for the entire summer. Amongst other things this led to a bumper crop of apricots. We didn't have hardly any last year and over the years transport difficulties have escalated making the sale of apricots and other stonefruit (with the possible exception of cherries ) difficult.... As you can see a lot of the fruit dropped not just because we didn't pick it but as a result of the drought and windy days. My good friend Alan Savins identified fruit fly as a major threat to Tasmania many years ago. His prophecy at the time was ignored but now it has happened. Fortunately fruit fly checks have been going on for some time and the growers are aware it has entered the State. Which one is it: global warming or a one off hotter than normal summer. Does it matter? What does matter is the potential for wiping out the horticultural industry as we see it today. What happened to me this summer means fruit fly would have a great source of food and possibly spread like wire fire. (another threat to farming on the east coast). My management practices will have to change. Many of my trees will have to be cut down so that fruit droppings are minimised. Throwing out unused fruit to the animals will have to be assessed too. What do we do with waste fruit and general management practices need to be reassessed. Tasmania has been the lucky state horticulturally but those days look like coming to an end. Large scale producers relying on an export market must feel severely threatened. the spread of fruit fly has been stopped in the past probably by the cold winters we normally enjoy. But a hot summer followed by warmer winters creates a completely new scenario. Backyard gardeners could be the avenue by which the spread of this terrible menace will be unconstrained. Likewise greenhouses create a warmer environment by which fruit fly can overwinter and survive to do more damage in the summer months. Fruit fly control measures haven't really stooped the southerly movement through Australia. Sterilisation of the mail fruit fly has helped and of course Bass strait has been a very useful Quarantine barrier but we can see now that it may not be good enough. Yes I am worried. Fruit fly getting into Tasmania is a major threat to all gardeners and measures to control it should be made transparent and immediate implemented.

05.01.2022 The Corona virus is infecting our lives in so many ways. (sorry about the pun on infection) It is also affecting our ability to get out our fresh fruits and other products. We are now offering 12kg boxes of apples in many varieties for $30 and mixed boxes for $35. You can ring us if you wish to order and order online by going to https://www.eurekafarm.net you can actually pay on line and we will have your order ready when you come. I hope this helps. Of course you can just ring us and we will discuss what apples we have and other products. The online system also lets you order jams and preserves. We would be pleased to hear how else we can improve your shopping experience.

04.01.2022 Spring is in the air. Daffodils flowering along all our fences. Cold at nights but we are relying less on the fireplace to keep warm. Many of our stonefruit trees have blossomed. All in all it is a good time to visit if you like seeing the trees in blossom. We have been very busy trellising our blackberries and repairing fences and netting. The shop is open most days for coffee and cake. If unsure whether to come give us a ring. telephone no. is 63725500 Have fun - regards Denis and Ann

02.01.2022 having trouble posting messages so will repeat the gist of what I wrote last night. We would love to have a few more reviews from our loyal customers. We have so many good comments on trip adviser and google but as it is now our intention to promote ourselves more through Facebook we need to improve our image. As you will see we had 2 unfavourable reviews in the 2017-2018 summer raspberry season. This was due to our first attempt to trial PYO raspberries. It wasn't too succes...sful and not just for the reasons necessarily stated in these reviews. Our raspberry patches are not located very conveniently and we had not sufficiently sorted out what was fair if young people wanted to pick just a few berries in that season. We trialed it again this year with a much greater degree of success. With our tree fruit we also welcome pickers but there again the difficulty is when they only want to pick say 3 or 4 apples and we are busy. Most of the time only Ann and I are operating the shop and sometimes it is only Ann as I am already outside somewhere doing farmwork. We always welcome new ideas on how to improve our contacts with our visitors and obviously we don't like upsetting people. Again thanks to everyone who has supported us for the 28 years we have been operating. See more
