23.01.2022 103 Today! Dame Vera Lynn. Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (ne Welch; born 20 March 1917) is an English singer of traditional popular music, songwriter and... actress, whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during the Second World War. She is widely known as "the Forces Sweetheart" for giving outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India, and Burma during the war as part of Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her are "Well Meet Again", "The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "Therell Always Be an England". She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the UK and the US and recording such hits as "Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart" and her UK number one single "My Son, My Son". Her last single, "I Love This Land", was released to mark the end of the Falklands War. In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart, with compilation album Well Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn. Lynn also scored a number one in 2014, when she was 97, with the collection Vera Lynn: National Treasure, and remains the oldest person to top the album charts. Further, she released the compilation album of hits Vera Lynn 100 in 2017, to commemorate her centennial year, and it was a number-3 hit, making her the first centenarian performer to have an album in the charts. She has devoted much time and energy to charity work connected with ex-servicemen, disabled children, and breast cancer. She is held in great affection by veterans of the Second World War and in 2000 was named the Briton who best exemplified the spirit of the 20th century.

22.01.2022 The Twelve days of Turkey On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me Im glad weve bought a turkey and a proper Christmas tree. On the second day of Christmas much laughter could be heard, as we tucked into our turkey - a most delicious bird.... On the third day of Christmas we had friends in from next door. The turkey tasted just as good as on the day before. On the fourth day of Christmas Gran came, shes rather old. We finished up the Christmas pud and ate the turkey cold. On the fifth day of Christmas outside the snowflakes flurried. But we nice and warm inside - we ate the turkey curried. On the sixth day of Christmas the turkey spirit died. The children fought and bickered and we ate the turkey fried. On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave a wince. When we sat down to dinner and was given turkey mince. On the eight day of Christmas the dog ran off for shelter. I served up turkey pancakes and a glass of Alka Seltzer. On the ninth day of Christmas poor Dad began to cry. He said he couldnt stand the strain of eating turkey pie. On the tenth day of Christmas the air was rather blue. And everybody grumbled at eating turkey stew. On the eleventh day of Christmas the Christmas tree was moulting. Mince pies as hard as rock and the turkey quite revolting. On the twelfth day of Christmas at last Dad smacked his lip. The guests had gone, the turkey too - we dined on fish and chips.

18.01.2022 Dinosaur Steps! with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Ensemble has been a very popular event at this years TMAG Childrens Festival all the shows have now so...ld out! We asked the composer, Thomas Misson, a few questions about his very special dino-themed musical presentation: Whats your compositional process? How do transform a brief into music? For all briefs and commissions, initially Ill do up a structural plan, research the unique capabilities of each instrument Im working with, and research the topic Im writing about. This phase tends to transition into writing musical material and finally proofreading/addressing notational problems. This is very flexible and I will often decide its more productive to jump forwards or backwards in this process. How did you incorporate the theme of dinosaurs into your work? Instrument selection was important as we had limited space. I thought about the characteristics of dinosaurs (large, impressive, intimidating, powerful), while also thinking about the environments they inhabited and the avian themes the project is trying to get across. Then I decided, in conjunction with deciding the instruments how this would manifest itself in terms of texture, harmony, instrumental capabilities and techniques, rhythm and other layers of musical thought. What do you enjoy most about composing? On a good day, composing feels like being a kid again playing with their favourite toy. Curiosity about music has many useful topics up for research; theory, history, orchestration and instrumentation, acoustics, mathematics just to name a few. Its a wonderfully geeky way to pursue music. Tell us a little about the work the instrumentation, what sounds were going to hear, and whether theres anything in particular for which we should be listening? The instrumentation is Flute, Trumpet, Horn, Bass Trombone, Contrabassoon, Marimba, Bass Drum, Triangle, and String Quartet. There will be a lot of raucous roaring, stomping as well as more gentle bird sounds and bird song. Youll also hear some horn writing that sounds like its from an Attenborough documentary, and look out for the falling out meteors! What did you want to be when you were growing up? I thought psychologist for a little while, but I think music was always going to win out in the end. It hasnt stopped me from incorporating psychological ideas into music anyway and letting some of my other passions fuel my compositions. Did you like dinosaurs as a kid? If so, which one was your favourite and why? Its dorky but I still like them in my mid 20s! Argentinosaurus is my favourite. I was fascinated with the really massive ones.
