24.01.2022 My partner Hannah and our dog Murray are currently living in a 7m diameter Mongolian yurt. We built it ourselves with dogwood trees, reclaimed hardwood door frames and a mix of canvas and modern insulation. Weve been in it for 2 years this winter. People often ask if it gets cold living in a tent in Tasmania... We thought it would be. We installed an oversized old woodheater only to learn that it is much harder, in fact, to keep the yurt cool through summer, as anyone whos woken up in a tent pitched in full sun can attest! - Daniel Lizotte, Performer

19.01.2022 "I once travelled across Malaysia with a group of friends. And on a whim we decided we would go to a particular town earlier than we thought - I cant remember why. In any case we didnt have a lot of money or time so we just grabbed whatever accommodation we could find available. We had a group of around eight so we couldnt all fit into one place. When we arrived we dropped the first groups off, those two lucked out. They were in two B&B style places, quaint and quite bea...utiful. We then arrived at ours, the lift doors wouldnt quite close so you could see the wall of the shaft pass by the small gap in the door. The room was as to be expected not great, but hey you roll with it. We dropped our stuff off and went to meet the rest of the group. We did the usual things grabbed some food, but somehow we got found ourselves in a backroom pool hall where a game of cards was happening. Apart from anything else we soon realized we could quite possibly be in some underground gambling den - that was definitely the vibe. Apart from us and the people playing cards, there were maybe one or two people in the joint. Every one of them turned to look as we entered. Just like in an old western. Nobody seemed to mind us being there, so we played some pool and observed the game. It was some form of pyramid poker. Later on, we returned to our accommodation and the went up in the same lift and wandered darkened halls with only the dimmest flickering globes glowing. It looked like something out of a horror movie. I was on a mattress on the floor - and the room when we opened the door had a few cockroaches skittering around. Needless, to say I didnt get much sleep from trying to keep my mouth shut that night. I should say the rest of our trip was amazing and beautiful and sometimes when you travel these are the kinds of places you have to stay because that is all there is. And I ended up with a half-decent story out of it." - Chris Jackson, Sound Designer
19.01.2022 Once I squatted in this empty apartment in and old textile factory in the Brooklyn Navy Yards. It had no power but it was summer and there were a few candles around. Full disclosure my friend also lived next door, the landlord just never bothered to lock it so we were free to roam around the entire floor of the building. Inside the apartment it was empty save for a swing hanging from the ceiling and a grand piano, which was in pretty good tune. - Marcus McKenzie, Performer

16.01.2022 The #AmplifyMelanatedVoices challenge calls on social media users to focus on the social justice work of BIPOC (black, indigenous and people of color) amid the international protests surrounding racial injustice and police brutality in order to give a platform to those who are historically silenced or looked over. Over the next twelve days we will be platforming the works of BIPOC artists. Naarah is a Gidja performer and musician who lives in Lutruwita, Tasmania. 14.01.2022 "We were performing in Queenstown for an event and wed been given free board at the old deserted nursing quarters. From the beginning the place gave us all weird vibes...it could have been a number of things, perhaps the empty hallway with a single lit lamp on the floor, the room full of smashed tvs, or the creepy doll sitting in the communal space. Anyway, we walked into our bedrooms, and I immediately opted to stay with my colleague because my door was so warped from the w...eather it wouldnt close. That night after performing we came back and were settling in for the night with a cup of tea when some fellow artists came into the common area and asked us if wed heard about the quarters being haunted. We said we hadnt and they proceeded to tell us that on the previous evening one of their mates had woken up to a ghost child sitting on the edge of their bed asking, "are you mummy?". Now Im by no means a believer when it comes to the supernatural, but this story still freaked the crap out of me. Later that night, as we lay wide awake in terror of the child ghost, both my roommate and I realised we had to wee. However the idea of leaving the room was so overwhelming that we decided to uitilse the sink that was right above my mattress head. We took turns relieving ourselves in fits of laughter as we watched each other, legs flailing in the air whilst attempting to not sit in our own wee. The next morning we packed our bags and legged it out of there. Needless to say it would have received a 0 star rating from me - Ellen Roe, Stage Manager (Hobart)

11.01.2022 During the lead up to Caravan Boat Treehouse we collected stories from the cast and crew about the strange and wonderful places they had inhabited. Now more than ever we want to share these stories with all of you. Heres a photo of my boys jumping rocks at dusk on Sarah Island, Tasmania. We camped the night with a friend and while we were snuggy warm, in the back of my mind was the reality that we were 28kms by boat from anyone. Sarah Island is known for its dark convict history of isolation and hardship. No doubt hundreds of people died there under shocking conditions including the local Indigenous people who too were captured and incarcerated. While the island today is incredibly beautiful, it was a little spooky when the sun went down thinking about all those lost souls. - Melissa King, Director

05.01.2022 More great independent theatre initiatives coming out of this less than great time.
05.01.2022 It was my first international trip. 30 hours in transit. We arrived in a small airport around midnight, fell into a taxi, and drove through the pitch black night to the house that would be our home for the next month. Threw ourselves in the door and into bed. Woke up the next day experiencing the joys of jetlag for the first time, with no real bearing on where wed been deposited the night before. I will never forget stepping out our front door onto a street lined with rainb...ow coloured houses, and into the brightest, whitest, crispest, most perfect Newfoundland day; and feeling the energy of that incredible Island in every cell of my body. The house we stayed in wasnt out of the ordinary, but that moment of opening the front door on our first morning in Newfoundland was totally extraordinary. And the Island claimed a piece of my heart forever. - Jane Johnson, Performer

03.01.2022 Penumbra Theatre Company is based in Minnesota and creates professional productions which illuminates the human condition through the prism of the African American experience. Their goal is to create an American mythology that includes African Americans and other peoples of color in every thread of the fabric of society. https://penumbratheatre.org #Aboriginallivesmatter #amplifymelanatedvoices #blacktheatre Repost @penumbratheatre ... As early as third grade, kids subject to zero tolerance policies are at risk for suspension and expulsion, which significantly increases school dropout rates, and sets into motion a whole host of legal issues as students are labeled delinquent. Small infractions add up and shadow children throughout their school age years, shaping their futures at age seven, ten, and fifteen. We are criminalizing our kids. This season Penumbra will present Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau, a powerful play that will raise awareness and prompt inter-district discussion as we work with educator partners, families, and child advocates. #Pipeline See more
