20.01.2022 Today the UNI hockey club mourns the passing of one our most treasured members, Barry Holmes. Barry was a late bloomer in the hockey world having come to the University club from OHA and then the Wombats. Whilst having little hockey experience he knew that his beloved football (soccer) translated well to hockey. I’m not sure some of the tactical theory he put forward worked, but he was always thinking about it! Champagne 7s needed a keeper and Barry had been overlooked for... a younger version at his then club; Barry was thus welcomed with open arms into his new sporting home. It was like he had always been a member of the team. Barry tended his goal magnificently, often keeping the Sevens in the game and parrying the shots. Barry had a talent for coping with the inevitable one on scenarios we left him with, often shutting down the play. Who will ever forget the Champagne Sevens grand final win off the back of Barry’s Penalty Shootout heroics? As a goalkeeper, Barry was everything you would want, stable, reliable, dependable, just the thing you would want in a friend that he was to us all. As one of the Champagne Sevens team commented on hearing the news ..I’ll miss Barry. Bloody good bloke and a gentleman. We will all have two potato cakes and a light beer soon. The Club extends condolences to Barry’s wife Jan and his daughters, Madeleine and Natalie Vale Barry See more

03.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all of our UNI family members and supporters. What a year we’ve had!!! The excitement of the first game of the season, to no hockey season, then the first game of the season..again!!! We had so many people working tirelessly behind the scenes and volunteering their time so that we’d get to play (THANK YOU!) Things were different but we all accepted the changes required so that we could play our beloved game. ... There were many highlights, we saw our men’s PL team fight their way for a place in the finals, we watched a young goalie named Sticks step up when the odds were against him and OMG, he did not disappoint! We had many senior and junior teams play in grand finals and some were lucky enough to get the big win. The end of the season was here quickly and whilst we had a lot to celebrate, it wasn’t lost on any of us that other clubs in our extended hockey family, interstate and overseas were not as lucky as we were and were/are still doing it tough and our thoughts are with them. Stay safe, enjoy the festive season and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!
