25.01.2022 I have a one-off 2-3pm slot available for this Sunday. Wanna wail with the power of Janis? Discount available.

24.01.2022 Alot goes in to improving your vocal capacity and agility. Like anything that is worth doing! A good place to start is to record your voice and listen back to it as a way of evaluating your sound. Sing something you are familiar with into your trusty mobile phone. Give it your all! Where is your point of struggle? High notes? Low notes? Is your pitch (ability to sing in tune) consistent? In your singing lesson I can give you tailored instruction on technique for ANY vocal issue so you can start working on the areas of weakness straight away. You will see progress even after a single lesson.

22.01.2022 Singing is an intimate activity. One of the highlights of teaching students over time is that when given the space to stumble, study, laugh and try again...they start to develop their own sound after having copied others they admire (common and not necessarily a bad thing when beginning most creative endeavours. There is much to learn from the greats!). It is quite something to behold.

21.01.2022 THIS SUNDAY 23rd APRIL: Lesson slots available between 10am and 1pm at Valley Sounds, Marino Street, Kings Meadows/Launceston. Contact me if you are interested in making a booking. The next lesson slots are not available until Sunday May 21st.

21.01.2022 PERFORMANCE TIP: Maintaing your focus throughout the silence between notes, during pauses between phrases and before you begin a tune is VITAL. Equally as important as the sound you make. Some singers close their eyes. Others keep them open. Both can be dynamic in their way. Do whatever it takes to keep your mind in the song when not singing. This is something the audience can feel and that they respond to. There are a variety of techniques I can teach you to become more proficient in this.

20.01.2022 CREATIVE ENDEAVOURS: Recently I have begun learning a new instrument (double bass). When learning something completely new, a number of barriers are experienced... as we move toward proficiency. A few things I have learnt recently through my experience that may be helpful for those considering learning to sing: * GOAL SETTING: Setting achievable goals with time frames for completion will keep you on track with your practise as you have set markers to work towards be it an audition for a show, a performance. Even technical goals such as increasing the strength of your voice through 2. 5 octaves by a set date is helpful. Keep at least one goal short term and achievable with a reward. For me it was to sing and play double bass at the same time, with a band, in public. REWARD: Something to wear! Goal achieved yesterday! Now I need to set another one so I dont get complacent with practise! * STAY INSPIRED: (Below image is my current bass hero Esperanza Spalding) Finding your technical limitations can be frustrating when your heart and soul wants to embody the instrument and play/sing like a pro. Use images or listen to your favourite singers and just sing along! Enjoy it! Or go find some new singers to keep the fire in the belly. * NOT EVERYONE WILL SHARE THE LOVE: Im quite sure I have driven my family up the wall with my practise recently. Hahaha. Not everyone will be interested about your journey to pursue singing or your creativity in general but we all should have someone or some folk who we can bounce ideas off and talk music with. Go find those people. If not in your house - via the interwebs! If you feel a bit squashed...go back to the first two dot points. Rinse. Repeat.

20.01.2022 SINGING TIP: Resonance. The face contains some wonderful resonating chambers! If you struggle with vocal projection (singing at a greater volume than your speaking voice) see below pointers. 1) TEETH: Lift your lips slightly and show a bit of teeth! :) To avoid looking creepy just smile a little. Your teeth vibrate and ring as we sing. Think of singers such as Annie Lennox and Freddie Mercury! Great facial bone structure (!) and beautifully large teeth. 2) HUMMING: Hum any no...te until your sinuses tingle then starting singing a vowel sound from that. Still not loud enough for you? 3) BREATHING AND ENERGY: Take a deeper breath before you hum to give the sound some energy from the beginning. Use your Im-telling-you -off-voice. Use a long note. Choose a note. Hum for a second or two then part the lips and sing heyyyyy on a single note.

20.01.2022 All set for todays vocal coaching. Mimimimiiiiiiiiiii *chuckle

19.01.2022 So many people I know have been told at least once in their life that they "cant sing" or that they dont have a "good voice." In over a decade of teaching I have never met an unteachable voice. I stopped singing publicly in my teens when I wasnt chosen for a particular choir. It happens! I encourage you to take the courageous step to sing. Sing in the car. Sing with your kids. Sing when you walk around the house or garden. The only way to improve is to practise and also to have the courage to ask for some help. Join a choir. Come and have a lesson. Life is short and singing is a joy that you can experience instantly anywhere at anytime.

16.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS! One to One Vocal Coaching is BACK in Launceston. Lessons available from Riverside. $50 per lesson. Discounts available for lessons booked in bulk. *** Put down the hair brush and replace it with a microphone! Itll be fun, I promise. :)

16.01.2022 One of the joys of my life (aside from my babies, family and partner, cheese, hot wings and probably chocolate!) is teaching children singing. I have had some new children start this week and it is always a thrill watching them start to express themselves through their favourite songs. If your child, or one you know, would like to come and have a sing, why don't you join them? You can share the lesson and both get something out of it!... Message me to arrange a time.

16.01.2022 Greetings! If you or someone you know in Launceston (or surrounds) quietly writes songs in the wee hours of the night and would like some tips and tricks and maybe a piece of cake with a bunch of other ladies that do the same, please message me your interest. 2pm to 6pm Sunday April 9. The last songwriting and performance workshop I ran was a huge success plus the catering and venue were excellent (hosted by the glorious Sarah Triffit of Valley Sounds). Relevant advice, welcoming atmosphere, relaxed vibe. Do it. Cant hurt! Susannah x

15.01.2022 New Singing Teacher in Hobart from Ireland!!! Please support the gorgeous and very talented singer Jennifer Bell by liking and sharing her teaching page to anyone interested in lessons. I can attest to Jens solid foundation in teaching technique and she has a particular knack for working with those beginning their singing journey.

15.01.2022 Singing Tip: WARMING UP Awareness of tongue position whilst singing is a crucial step in improving your voice. A good way to prepare your mouth for singing is to swallow. Feel the back of the tongue lower and settle. Always hum for a few minutes before attempting your technical exercises to warm up your vocal folds. So: 1) Swallow 2) Be aware of the tongue position 3) keep the tongue there... 4) simply close your lips gently and hum. I generally hum on a nice and comfy low note (A below middle C) then hum along to music I like. Warming up doesnt need to be boring! Keep it fun. See more

10.01.2022 It has been a joy to meet all of my new students for 2016. From children that just light up singing the songs of their favourite artists...through to more experienced singers working on new productions and those whose desire to sing has laid dormant for years. Make it a better Tuesday by singing something. Does wonders.

08.01.2022 Gosh. Now the word is out, places are filling fast! There are still one hour timeslots available on Sundays and Mondays (day and evening).

07.01.2022 Singing Tip: Position of the head is so important when maintaining control of your voice and preventing any strain. Use a mirror: By lowering the chin slightly and keeping shoulders level, particularly when you are singing an ascending phrase - you should instantly feel more control over the airflow thus allowing you to sing more freely.

06.01.2022 Perfect spot to unwind and have a warble!

05.01.2022 Dear students and followers, One to One Vocal Coaching will be closing its proverbial doors until 2019 due to work and family commitments. Keep singing! Susannah

04.01.2022 A brief pause in teaching this week but resuming next Sunday. Happy Mothers Day to all singing mummas! Today my 3.5yr old asked me for a singing lesson. She wanted to sing scales and stand where my students stand. It was the cutest thing hearing her voice follow mine along the familiar scalic repetitions of vowels. I kept stopping mid-exercise to applaud her but she would scold me and demand I play some more so she can do more singing! Hahahha. Delightful.

02.01.2022 Bring out your inner Billie Holiday. FREE lesson offered should you refer One to One Vocal Coaching to someone and they book a lesson. TWO lesson vacancies remain for new students. Give me a tingle if you are keen to book an introductory session.
