14.01.2022 TULS wishes to invite you ALL to the Ninth Annual Women in Law Breakfast! This event will be held on Wednesday, October 7 at the Old Woolstore in Hobart and we ...are elated to announce that the keynote speaker for this event will be Her Honour Magistrate Jackie Hartnett. Many young lawyers and law students, particularly women, face the challenge of building a career in an increasingly competitive environment while also pursuing other endeavours. By holding the Women in the Law Breakfast, TULS hopes to bring members of the legal profession together with students to acknowledge and discuss the challenges faced as well as the opportunities for women within the Tasmanian legal profession. More broadly, we aim to foster a strong relationship with the legal community and encourage further interaction between students and professionals. We wish to stress that both men and women are warmly invited to this event! Tickets will be $40 which includes breakfast and one raffle ticket. More raffles can be purchased at the breakfast as the prizes will be fabulous! All profits will go to Women's Legal Service Tasmania and the Hobart Women’s Shelter. For more information, follow the event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/328463108241607

13.01.2022 ***Meditation sessions open to legal professionals over four weeks at the Law Society*** The Law Society of Tasmania is joining with South Hobart Yoga and Meditation Centre to bring members in person, bite-sized low impact (no sweat!) lunch-time meditation sessions. These will help you take charge of yourself, reduce the impact of stress on your body and mind, learn relaxation techniques, and find ways to live in the present. In these half hour sessions, access a part of you ...that is often lost in the turbulence of daily life and become mentally clearer, calmer and more balanced. The Law Society of Tasmania has currently opened 4 half hour sessions that run FROM 16 November 2020. The sessions are $5 each so why not book a few and reap the benefits of some regular meditation time-out. Register here. This is a seated (on a chair) meditation, classroom style in the Law Society’s downstairs training room at 28 Murray Street. No change of clothing is required. The sessions are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. This class is being trialled for 4 weeks in Hobart. Expressions of interest for classes in the North and North West are welcome [email protected] Current members of the LST only

13.01.2022 The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) are requesting Tasmanians call the office of Senator Jacqui Lambie in relation to The Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities) Bill 2020 The ASRC say that- 1.This Bill will increase unchecked powers of Minister Dutton and the Department of Home Affairs while removing accountability and transparency of Australian Border Force conduct and treatment of people held in detention.... 2. The Minister already has the power to remove phones with cause via the police, therefore does not need these new powers to remove mobile phones from individuals or whole groups of people without cause. 3. This bill has been around for three years, and the government has failed to provide evidence for the need for these expanded, unchecked powers, or evidence the Minister does not already have the power to currently remove phones with cause. 4. There is no independent oversight into detention, so seizing mobile phones would make transparency in detention impossible, nor to expose ABF abuse of power. For more information please see the ASRC website or links in comments
