24.01.2022 With only a few days left in September that still gives me a few days left to boast about my favourite gemstone, and also the birthstone of the month, Sapphire! heres a few different colours from a few different localities including Australia, USA and Madagascar. I love the variety of colours you can get in Sapphire as well as their hardness and their great dispersion of colour. These 5 are still currently available and if you havnt yet heard the news, I’ve also launched a new website which makes finding beauties like these on the website quicker! You can now search by gemstone, origin, or price using the search filters, and for added fun you can now change the currency on the site as well to shop in your own currency go and see for yourself #tatumgems

24.01.2022 This little bi-colour bluish purple and pink stone was an interesting shape and colour, and it was honestly a surprise what colour it would turn out when finished but pale pink and pale blue mixed to make a nice sweet mauve and it also colour shifts from mauve in daylight to a peachy colour indoors, how delightful! this #transformationthursday is a gorgeous unheated Sapphire from Umba, Tanzania weighing in at 0.71ct and measures 7.5 x 5.2mm #tatumgems

21.01.2022 What gemmology has taught me vs what gem cutting has taught me Being a gemmologist and a gemcutter go hand in hand, but they have each taught me different things about gemstones. Studying Gemmology has taught me a lot about the variety of gemstones, the science behind the optical and physical properties, and how to understand the chemistry and physics to help identify gemstones. However, as a gemcutter I have also learnt the practical side of the gemstones and how they feel ...and perform when grinding and polishing them, how sensitive to heat and friction they are, or even how they smell as you are cutting them. The gemstone in the above photo was a perfect example of where my knowledge of both skillsets helped me. This stone was sold to me as an oval preform of Goshenite, it had no natural surface features or crystal characteristics because it was a preform. During the cutting process it began to feel odd to me and didnt handle like a Goshenite usually would for me. By the end of the cutting process I knew from my years of experience as both a gemmologist and a gem cutter that this wasnt Goshenite, but it didnt handle like any other colourless gem I had cut before either. During cutting it had strong directional hardness but still durable and not soft like Quartz or Topaz, it didnt polish like a Quartz would, and it had strange fraying at the edges but not quite like cleavage planes of Topaz. The only other option it could be in my head was possibly Spodumene, but I had never cut a Spodumene before and they can be quite heat sensitive and delicate to cut. Once I took it off the final dop stick I did some proper gemmological tests like checking its RI, UV and polariscope and sure enough my gut instinct and experience as a cutter was correct, this stone was not Goshenite, Quartz, or Topaz but a Spodumene Over the years the odd stone gets mixed up in the wrong parcel, and as a gem cutter its a good advantage to have both the gemmological knowledge and also the experience to detect when a stone is mislabeled #tatumgems

21.01.2022 Here’s an Australian Parti Sapphire with green and gold fever this thin slice of rough was too thin to facet so I decided to polish it as a tablet cut to show of the gorgeous banding of green on yellow, and of course while also following the natural shape of the rough (I didnt take a before photo though, so you’ll have to use your imagination of what the rough looked like ). This stone is unheated and mined in Rubyvale, QLD weighing 1.86ct and measures 11.1 x 7.3mm. If you’re interested in this unique piece send me a DM for pricing happy monday, and happy Sapphire month #tatumgems

15.01.2022 When you find that perfect natural diffused sunlight in your house, but you’re balancing on one leg to get it but seriously though, these stones just jumped out at me today, their colours are wild! #tatumgems

14.01.2022 This was a fun gemstone that came across my bench recently and needed an identity check. Under the microscope it tells no secrets as to what it is though, its a natural Ruby with natural inclusions of silk and small crystals, but also has obvious tell-tale signs that it has been glass filled to enhance the stone. This stone had many scattered gas bubble inclusions from the glass filling and also strong blue flashes and swirls in the glass filler. While some glass filled rubie...s may only have one or 2 small gas bubbles that are hard to find under magnification and may be tricky to identify, this stone had many large gas bubbles visible without a loupe. The main reason for glass filling Rubies and occasionally Sapphires is to enhance the colour of otherwise opaque and near colourless, low grade corundum gravel. The glass filling is often coloured glass to give the stone a rich colour, and it also stabilises the otherwise porous low grade corundum, and the result is a glassy and bright looking gemstone. However, the reality is, that this stone has a higher percentage of glass than of natural gemstone anymore. Glass filling is a treatment that must always be disclosed and must be treated with care by jewellers #tatumgems See more

13.01.2022 Behold this gorgeous natural orange Sapphire from Colombia! if I didnt share this before photo for #transformationtuesday I dont know if people would believe me that its naturally occuring in this colour! It had the most gorgeous bright orange colour zones throughout this pale blue waterworn crystal I had no guesses for how this piece would turn out; if the colour zones would be blended, if the orange would mix with the blue, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined and you can still appreciate the natural zoning when you move the stone around, as well as the cute colour stripe down the middle this might be up there with one of my favourite gems I’ve cut this year #tatumgems

12.01.2022 This #transformationtuesday comes to you from Tunduru, Tanzania in the form of a gorgeous striking Sapphire! this Sapphire throws some purple and some blue depending on the lighting and is such a rich and gorgeous colour, one of the best I have had the pleasure of cutting When I was assessing the rough I wasnt sure how I would cut this one, it had many possible shapes, and I only made the decision once I began cutting that it would be this arch triangle brilliant kind of shape this loupe clean stone finished up weighing 1.15ct and it sure packs a delightful punch! #tatumgems

12.01.2022 Alot of the Garnet rough sourced from Tanzania is often small roundish crystals which dont offer alot of creativity with shapes and they dont create a large spread for size either. So I’ve been trying to get creative with a range of garnets I’ve been cutting lately, and this particular ‘seed’ type shape has been appealing to me alot lately in a few of my designs. This one in particular reminds me of a delicious pomegranate seed I dont use computer designing software to cut any of my designs, and I very rarely document them either, so each stone I cut is freehand and often never repeated. I will occasionally cut similar variations, but to me gem cutting is an artform, and each individual gemstone deserves to have its beauty brought out in it in the best way for that particular stone #tatumgems

10.01.2022 For #transformationtuesday this week I thought I’d share this gorgeous peacock coloured Tanzanite the piece of rough had lovely pleochroism showing blue, purple and a hint of green, and also had some interesting zoning through the top of it too, so I was pleased to be able to keep this look in the finished stone this Tanzanite finished up at 1.41ct and is currently available on the website after yesterday’s stock release #tatumgems

10.01.2022 Im low key obsessed with this freeform Tanzanite which has beautiful purple and blue pleochroism this is a cheeky sneak peak for mondays stock release theres so many I wanted to sneak peak with you, it was hard to only choose one. Stay tuned for Monday morning to see what else will be on the website #tatumgems

10.01.2022 These fun preforms I’ve been working on this afternoon are so juicy I can only give you a quick sneak peak of their colour these will be cut and added to the website stock in October #tatumgems

09.01.2022 Sapphires are easily one of my favourite types of gemstone for so many reasons. One of the reasons is just the variety and how unique each individual piece is while I mostly cut and sell faceted Sapphires, these 3 were just too gorgeous in their natural form and so I’ll be selling them as is. The first one is a Trapiche slice, which I have polished on one side to show the trapiche markings, and left natural on the back. The blue slice in the middle has been polished on both... the front and back to show the beautiful blue transparent colour and its unique zoning pattern. And the third, is a beautiful example of a dog tooth crystal which I have left natural and unpolished, this crystal is very dark in colour but when held up to the light has deep teal colours and a bit of colour banding. These 3 equally unique examples of a Sapphire’s many and varied forms, are all unheated and were hand fossicked by a miner in the Glen Innes region in NSW. Many of the sapphires from this region are typically quite blue in colour compared to my usual Sapphires that I stock from Rubyvale, QLD. If you’d like to own one of these comment on the post or send me a DM #tatumgems See more

09.01.2022 I love that first glimpse of colour after polishing the first facet #tatumgems

05.01.2022 #noedit needed on these naturally incredible Ethiopian Opal rose cuts you better believe these will be coming up for sale in an instagram rose cut special...tomorrow in fact! 9am AEST on thursday these will be going live, all details and prices will only be revealed when they go live to check when that time is for you in your timezone, check the countdown timer in my stories and make sure to set your alarms and turn on post notifications #tatumgems

05.01.2022 New stock went on the website last week and there’s still so many unique gems available that haven’t been snapped up yet #tatumgems

04.01.2022 Today felt pretty icy in Adelaide, wind, rain and hail, but the perfect weather to be inside cutting gemstones in my opinion this #transformationtuesday is the sweetest little icy blue Madagascan Sapphire measuring 7.8 x 3.8mm and weighs 0.51ct. This slender Sapphire shield was cut from a small and thin piece of rough, but finished up clean as a whistle, and would make the perfect plus 1 in a moi et toi ring or maybe an art deco style drop pendant #tatumgems

04.01.2022 This weeks #transformationtuesday is an unheated Fancy Zoisite, and if youve been following me this year you may have noticed they are becoming one of my favourite stones to document this gorgeous crystal had yellow showing on one axis and a soft pink down the other axis, so I wasnt sure what the resultant colour after faceting would be. The finished result was a lovely peachy champagne colour, still showing hints of pink as the stone moves around, reminiscent of Congo Tourmalines what a delightful gem! #tatumgems

03.01.2022 New exciting stock has just landed on the website with over 100 new gems added, this is just a small taste of some of the beauties I’ve now got available on the website click the link in my bio to see the full range #tatumgems #partisapphire #turquoise #opal #spinel #rainbowlattice #ivorycreekvariscite #amethysttrapiche #opalisedpetrifiedwood #surfaceetchedobsidian #mahengegarnet

03.01.2022 First up on the bench today, cutting the crowns on these gems Malaya Garnet (Tanzania) Blue Topaz Pink Tourmaline (Himalaya mine, California) #tatumgems

02.01.2022 If you missed the Instagram mini stock release last week, then there’s still a few gems left like this Spessartite Garnet that packs a punch, or Quartz Druzy pair that would make some really elegant earrings, or this colour shift Sapphire which proved to be a nightmare to photograph these are all still available and if they dont sell through Instagram or Facebook they will eventually go on the website in Dec if you like any of these or want to know more details, send me a DM #tatumgems

01.01.2022 This week’s #transformationtuesday is a special one this is a rare 2.39ct Malkhan Tourmaline from Russia cut for @masterpiece.collective these Russian Rubellite Tourmalines are highly sought after for their purity and intensity of rich colours ranging from hot pink to purple to neon magenta to almost electric pink, and this stone did not disappoint! Tourmalines can be notoriously sensitive with cutting sometimes but thankfully this one was a dream, slow and steady wins the race this drop dead gorgeous stone is currently available, send me a DM if you are interested #tatumgems
