23.01.2022 Fraudster behind bars: After two years on the run, a man from Western Australia has been sentenced to two years and five months jail for trying to get his han...ds on $1 million in fraudulent refunds. The 28-year-old tried to beef up his tax returns by falsely claiming he’d been working for a meat company that had withheld significant amounts of tax from him. We have sophisticated systems in place to detect false claims, and we’ll continue to do all we can to make sure fraud isn’t worth the risk. Read about the case at www.ato.gov.au//WA-man-sentenced-to-jail-after-reporting-/

19.01.2022 Unsure of what income to include in your tax return this year? Make sure you include your: salary and wages (JobKeeper payments and Eligible Termination Pay...ment are included in your income statement) certain Centrelink payments (incl. JobSeeker) business income (from a partnership, trust or as a sole trader) investment income (e.g. bank interest and dividends) foreign income other types of income (e.g. crowdfunding or from the sharing economy). If you’ve received a disaster recovery payment in relation to the 2019-20 bushfires you don’t need to include these on your tax return. 12.01.2022 Calling all teachers! It’s time to study your tax deductions so you can get an A+ on your return. See our cheat sheet of what you can and can’t claim: You can... claim working from home expenses. You can’t claim the cost of gifts you buy for your students or any time you pay for their personal expenses (e.g. their lunch, excursion fees or school books). You can claim self-education expenses if the course relates directly to your current job. You can’t claim a deduction if your study is only related in a general way to your job, or is designed to help you get a new one. You can claim a deduction when you drive between alternate workplaces for the same employer on the same day (e.g. from your school to another school to supervise an exam). Want to learn more?
