Outback man, 37, loses $12,000 to ATO scammers... The tax office phone scam has hit the outback, with one man in his 30s doling out $12,000 to the fraudsters. A 37-year-old man has lost $12,000 as the ATO phone scam hits the Australian outback. Police have been forced to issue yet another warning about tax office scams after a 37-year-old man sent fraudsters $12,000. Over the past two days, Alice Springs residents have been streaming into their local police station to report scam calls from multiple numbers one of them being the police station itself. The callers claimed they were from the taxation office and there were warrants out for the arrest of call recipients, a statement from the Northern Territory Police said. They then threatened to send police officers to the person’s location, unless a large sum of money was transferred into the scammer’s bank account. Similar calls have also been made to residents in Darwin this week. As a result of the calls, a 37-year-old man transferred $12,000 to the scammers’ bank account before he realised what had happened. NT Cybercrime Unit is investigating. Police are urging anyone who receives these calls to ignore them. Do not provide personal details and do not to transfer money to any bank accounts, the statement read.
