23.01.2022 Another productive week done and dusted

22.01.2022 A thought-provoking read. By Jane Smiley Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and... demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant. Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners. Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work. Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way. A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one. We do not require as much of any other species, including humans. That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't. No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one. Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation. A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn! Take care of your horses and treasure them. See more

08.01.2022 #11 This Riding Life: Playing With Your Energetic Volume Ground work and In Hand work play a big role in the work I do with my horses, and its a great training... ground to refine how it is you are communicating via your body language, and also how agile you are in terms of your energetic projection. I love to think of the energy we embody moving in a similar way to how we turn the volume up and down on a radio; we can turn it up if need be, but its equally possible to turn it back down. Through my own practice and through observing others, I find it fascinating how stuck we can get in our bodies; how we have a preferred modus operandi that we stick too throughout the day and how little we are called to express ourselves either side of that set channel. Horses naturally challenge this, and in order that we are communicating clearly, effectively and kindly, we need to be aware of what emotional and energetic frequency we are operating to and how adjustable we are within that. I also think it has to do with associations; many of us, for instance, perceive making ourselves bigger to be more aggressive, but they are actually very distinct entities! I would love to know what you think! Tell me where youre watching from and how you play with this. Onwards! Jane Curious to learn more about the Confident Rider Online Program? 07.01.2022 Breakers coming along well, even getting some time to get out on a few of my own. It's been lovely coming in the warmer months, and being covered in more hair than the horse

06.01.2022 Food for thought The problem with horse training is that society is set up to believe that you can buy a service and have things the way you want in a certain time frame. People look at horse training as if theyre spending their money on a product. And yet even the best horse trainers will tell you the horse takes its own time, and no one can guarantee a horse will be doing what you want from it when you want from it. The other problem is that even if your trainer can get... t done with your horse, it doesnt necessarily mean that you will be able to. Getting a horse right takes an amount of commitment on the owners part to develop the same type of relationship that the trainer has, otherwise how can you expect from your horse for yourself what your trainer gets, when its they who have put in the hours, the sweat, the patience and the desire to get Along with that horse? You arent spending money on a tune up for your car that you can take home and drive. The fact that money is involved leads people to believe they deserve something for what they paid, and they do, but, it happens in the animals time, not the humans. I think any good trainer would say they would do this for free if they could, just to help horses and people. And yet, we all have to eat. -Amy Skinner
