24.01.2022 Petra is one of the best trainers we have here in SA, and one of my personal favourites! Check out this amazing work with her two Rottweilers. So patient, so clever.

24.01.2022 Did you know it’s an offence to lead an animal from a vehicle (on a leash or any other leading device) and that includes a bicycle? So please don’t try to ride ...a bike whilst walking or running your dog. Not only is it unlawful, it can be dangerous--any number of unpredictable things could happen that could injure you or your dog. Take your dog on a walk instead. See more

24.01.2022 A reminder to always read with a critical mind...

24.01.2022 Thought it was a good time to repost this! https://fb.watch/1SKWFbrryV/

24.01.2022 So, here's what I'm doing when I'm not out there helping you with your beautiful dogs.... Having a willing learner is always a privilege, but one that is only 6 weeks old and just transitioning to solids really is incredible! This is Lorry's first ever attempt at targeting. We really didn't think he'd be too interested at all, so I hadn't even conditioned the clicker! He just went straight in, I captured the first attempt and from there on he had the concept! Sheep stupid? I don't think so!

19.01.2022 Daylight savings means dogs on leash on the beach! But wherever you are, make sure you do your research on the local laws before letting your dog off leash - or don’t be surprised if you receive a fine!

18.01.2022 Calling all puppy owners! Here’s your chance to vent or wax lyrical about your puppy! Butter-wouldn’t-melt one minute, and Tasmanian Devil the next? Then Ana at Adelaide Uni wants to hear about it!

17.01.2022 It’s going to be HOT in Adelaide next week so time to make sure you have some options to keep your dog cool. Multiple water sources are a must. These are a great, cheap option - dogs can play in them if they want to, but they’re really hard to tip over so if you’re gone all day you can feel confident that your dog will have access to water.

15.01.2022 Spend time getting to know what’s ’normal’ for your pet. The earlier you treat, the less pain your pet will be in, and the less intervention they will need. Find a vet that you trust and can build a relationship with. It’s so important for your comfort as well as your pet’s. You should feel perfectly happy to ask questions, suggest alternatives, and in almost every way be part of the decision making about what will happen to your pet. And if you don’t.....try another vet!

13.01.2022 A few enrichment ideas that don't involve food... https://fb.watch/1Ul6FjpM2E/

12.01.2022 Christmas should be a time for everyone to enjoy - so now is the time to start planning on how you will manage your pets over the holiday period. This has been a volatile year, so many pets are already feeling more unsettled and worried than ever before. Holidays are noisy, our routines change, there can be a constant stream of new people, other animals, and smells, and it's often HOT! Now is the time to start thinking about how you will ensure your pets enjoy the holidays ...too. Do they have a safe space they can retreat to, uninterrupted, if they choose to? If you have pocket pets or birds, then you may need to physically move their enclosures to give them some respite. Are they OK with sudden, unfamiliar noises (eg. christmas crackers, champagne corks etc)? If not, start some basic desensitisation to unusual noises using something like the Sound Proof Puppy Training App. Does your pet jump up on your visitors? Well, Nanna and the 2 year old may not appreciate it as much as you do, so start teaching them an incompatible alternative behaviour like go to your mat or sit. Does your dog resource guard food, or anything they steal? That could be a problem at Christmas Day lunch! Call a trainer to start working on this problem straight away. On the big day, make some time to take your dog out for a long smelly walk, or play with your cat, or perhaps do some fun training with your bird. That will release some of those happy hormones into their system, and fatigue them so they are more likely to rest. Most importantly, don't leave it until the last minute - or not think about it all - as your pets deserve to enjoy the holidays just as much as you do!

12.01.2022 So, SA you're now in a 6 day lockdown - no exercise outside of the home allowed - it's time to become a master of environmental enrichment! This will be particularly important for those of you with high energy/busy dogs. Get creative!

10.01.2022 This is so true!!

08.01.2022 This great clip has been doing the rounds again on FB, but in case you missed it here is an excerpt from the documentary Dogs, Cats and Scapegoats which looks at the misunderstood notions of spite, guilt, dominance and the naivety of human pack leaders, and why I AM NOT a fan of Cesar Milan (or any other person who causes harm to animals for that matter!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAfMQKNlJHI

06.01.2022 I am often called in to work with fearful dogs. This is supposed to be a book for children, but actually I think anyone of any age could learn a lot about living with, or interacting with, under-confident or fearful dogs. There is no greater joy than helping an animal feel safe and confident Get reading!

01.01.2022 More evidence to show that positive reinforcement training is really the only humane way to train
