13.01.2022 Happy Monday! A new blog post is live on our website! This one is about the new low and middle income tax offsets that have been circulating the news and internet in recent weeks.

11.01.2022 Employers: Are you planning Christmas festivities to reward your staff this year? Before you throw a party that will have them talking all year, it’s worth considering the fringe benefits tax (FBT) implications. Your FBT obligations will depend on: The amount you spend on each employee for the party When and where the party is held (e.g. on a work day, on business premises)... Who attends (e.g. staff only) The value and type of gifts you provide. Unwrap all Yule need to know about celebrating with your employees this festive season at www.ato.gov.au//Fring/In-detail/FBT-and-Christmas-parties/ Extracted from the ATO FB page.

08.01.2022 A new blog post is up on our website! This news bulletin is relevant for small business owners, and highlights changes to the ATO's instant asset write-off threshold. Have a read to see how these changes might affect you.

07.01.2022 The ATO has published some of the most unusual claims that they disallowed last financial year. Nearly 700,000 taxpayers claimed almost $2 billion of 'other' expenses, but the ATO's systematic review of claims had found, and disallowed, some very unusual expenses, including: Lego sets bought as gifts The Purchase of a brand new car The cost of raising twins Child support, private school fees, school uniforms... And one taxpayer tried to claim the cost of their wedding reception The 'other' deductions section of the tax return is for expenses incurred in earning income that don't appear elsewhere on the return. The ATO is reminding taxpayers that, in order to claim an 'other' deduction, the expenses must be directly related to earning income and they need to have a receipt or record of the expense. 05.01.2022 The case of the dodgy camper: We recently investigated an electrician whose tax return had some fishy claims... a camping guide, portable fridge, jerry can, sprinkler, BBQ wipes, shovels, soft drink and a picnic rug He said his boss needed him to travel and camp for work, but when we spoke to his employer they confirmed that wasn’t the case. Since the sparkie didn’t have any genuine expenses and knowingly misrepresented his circumstances, we knocked back the claims and ap...plied a penalty. Steer clear of the dodgy deductions trap. Check out our info on what you can claim at www.ato.gov.au//Income-and-deduc/Deductions-you-can-claim/ or talk to a registered tax agent. Dodgy deductions don't pay Extracted from the ATO FB site

But impersonating Santa at the work Christmas party isn’t tax ded...uctible, though (just heaps of fun).
