24.01.2022 A message from the Tropical Brain and Mind Foundation Whilst many of us have never met in person, at this point in our history it feels as we are closer than ever before. We are each facing up to life with the threat of Corona Virus. Noone is exempt , noone yet has the answer to this real and present danger to life and livelihood. Along with the very real anxiety, isolation and the tragedy of losing loved ones and becoming unemployed, there is a growing sense of looking out f...or each other. That might be a daily wave from the balcony, or check-ins via phone or facebook. Many are learning new skills or making new connections via social media. We are grateful that we have such fantastic health professionals but also anxious for each of them as they assist people who have contracted the virus and literally put their own lives on the line in particular cases. But this is not life as we want to live it and whilst everyone must stay indoors and follow medical advice until this is over, we know that mental health is being seriously affected by increasing anxiety and imposed isolation. The Tropical Brain and Mind Foundation was established to make a practical contribution to research and community education in health and well-being. Our focus to date has been on suicide prevention and mental health well-being. Our community based work is in abeyance at presence due to the virus but there are many resources that our Mentally Healthy City Townsville Project is posting on our MHC website. Please take the time to go to www.mhctsv.com.au

19.01.2022 We recognise and understand that some people are experiencing feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and concern as a result of changes to their working situations. W...hether you’re a business owner who employs staff or a sole trader, a manager at an organisation or an employee, your workplace may be facing difficult times as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. It’s normal to consider what that means for you. We’ve developed a dedicated page addressing the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on workplaces and mental health. You can find the information at bb.org.au/3adMDFk. Members of our community can also continue to support one another over at our dedicated ‘Coping with the coronavirus’ online forum thread: bb.org.au/33cNdQU. If you’re feeling distressed or overwhelmed, our mental health professionals are available 24/7 at the Beyond Blue Support Service on 1300 22 4636 or at beyondblue.org.au/getsupport for online chat (3pm-12am AEST) and email (responses within 24 hours). For immediate support call Lifeline on 13 11 14 and in an emergency, always call triple zero (000).

15.01.2022 The determination and resilience of those effected by the flooding event is nothing short of admirable. As has been published by media outlets, following the em...ergency response the recovery effort will be just as if not more difficult for our community. MHC is absolutely touched and grateful of the efforts of all service personnel, and those in the community supporting their neighbours and others. Whilst there are numerous support services offered to us from Council, State, and Federal Government, below are links to other services you might find useful in supporting the wellbeing of yourself and those around you. Please continue to follow the safety directions being published, and remember to look after your mental health and wellbeing. http://www.beyondblue.org.au//looking-after-yourself-after http://www.redcross.org.au//emergen/looking-after-yourself http://www.phoenixaustralia.org/recovery/ http://www.lifeline.org.au//recovering-after-a-natural-dis

15.01.2022 Today on International Women's Day, we’re shining the spotlight on an incredible group of women who, like countless other inspirational women in Australia, are ...working to make a difference. A group of Anangu women formed the NPY Women's Council to help make healthcare more accessible to their communities, particularly to support mental health and wellbeing. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play significant roles in their families and have a strong influence on the social and emotional wellbeing of whole communities across the country. They are holders of cultural knowledge and practice, caregivers, providers, healers, educators and advocates.
