23.01.2022 Progress is not inevitable. It’s up to us to create it. ...and when it comes to creating a better city for bike riding and walking these words ring true! Here's another example of one of our small project proposals at the corner of Elphin Rd and Dowling St that improve the roads for bike riders and walkers. However, more is needed if the people we talk to who want to ride but don't feel safe are to get on their bikes. Memo to City of Launceston Official fewer reports and studies and more budget action please!!
22.01.2022 Tonight's TBUG ride with Di has been cancelled due to the wet and windy conditions.
22.01.2022 An energetic wind at our backs through Westwood this morning certainly helped blow out the cobwebs and invigorate us! The post-ride catch up with the friendly and supportive group is a great reward for good effort . ** Also a pic from our ride through Osmaston a fortnight ago just because it's so lovely that it needs including
21.01.2022 Why not take a break from the car tomorrow and "Park it for the Planet"? A 5km bike ride alone will save 1.3kg of carbon emissions and help to get you healthier. Imagine if you could replace your car for a bike over a year. Try it out tomorrow,; ride a bike, walk or take a bus.
20.01.2022 When physical separation is not currently feasible, it's great to see the upgrades to the West Tamar Highway being undertaken. While not officially Bike Lanes, space has been taken from vehicles to make more defined space for bike riders. Surfaces have been improved, edges rebuilt and hazards removed. It's been a long time coming but thanks the Rene Hidding who made the works an election promise and to State Growth engineers for consulting with us and managing the work.

11.01.2022 West Tamar Highway - Launceston to Legana - Cycling Safety Improvements As a result of over ten years of lobbying, the Tasmanian Government has committed $1.5 million to improve cycling facilities and cycling safety on the West Tamar Highway between Launceston and Legana, as part of the West Tamar Highway Priority Projects. We need to keep up the lobbying for further improvements and upgrades north of the first roundabout at Acropolis Drive through Legana. An alternative ...off-road trail is also needed to connect Legana to Launceston. The West Tamar Highway - Launceston to Legana - Cycling Safety Improvements project will improve approximately 10 kilometres of cycling facilities on the West Tamar Highway between Margaret Street, Launceston to Legana Park Road, Legana. Works will be completed in selected areas to improve surfacing on shoulders, improving safety and user experience for cyclists. Improvement works include: Surfacing repair on roadside shoulders Adjustments to lane widths to provide additional space on shoulders Line marking adjustments and the provision of additional warning signage Head start boxes at signalised intersections where possible Shoulder widening where possible. It is anticipated that construction will commence in late August 2020, and will be completed in late December 2020, weather permitting. This project addresses a number of safety concerns identified by community members during the recent community consultation on the West Tamar Highway Launceston to Legana Corridor Study, in which 22% of respondents highlighted cycling safety as an area of concern. This study is ongoing, and will recommend a range of additional improvements to the highway. See more
10.01.2022 Hi. This Sunday it's back to the 55km Bridgenorth loop we know and love - except that this time we will take our revenge on the Bridgenorth Rd hills by doing the loop anti-clockwise. Out the West Tamar Hwy, Rosevears Drive, (too soon for coffee at Exeter? - I doubt it}) then along to Long Plains Road, gentle climb with a tail wind and zip down the hill to the highway and back to town. As the weather looks a bit dodgy, please register is you want me to let you know if I canc...el, if you want to meet us on the way or if you want a head start. Touring bike pace. Otherwise, 9.30 am at Brickfields Grade: 3 B 55km Malcolm [email protected] 0417 573 991
10.01.2022 After a number of false starts over the years, thanks to lobbying from TBUG, West Tamar Councillor Richard Ireland has initiated the development of a Trails Strategy for the West Tamar. Please let any suitable consultants know about this tender. TBUG looks forward to taking part in the consultation process for this positive initiative in the Tamar region. Tenders close 20th November.
09.01.2022 Congratulations to TBUG member, regular rider and supporter David Brice, on his Community Volunteer Award for his services to soccer. Community groups such as sporting clubs and TBUG rely on a team of wonderful volunteers to provide so much for others in the community. Please consider volunteering on the TBUG Committee at our AGM on Thursday 29 October - the work is relatively light and very rewarding.
08.01.2022 Everyone is invited to our little ceremony tomorrow to celebrate the first steps in the park and bike/ride program in Launceston. This is part of the making Launceston a great cycling city project funded through the Greater Regional Cities Challenge initiative that we successfully obtained in earlier this year. Watch out for the spring to autumn community rides program!!!
07.01.2022 Congratulations to Darlene who received a gift voucher from TBUG and Roll Cycles for being our lucky 1000th "Like" on our Facebook page. I remember when we were excited when we got 100! Thanks to everyone who likes us! Thanks to Roll Cycles for the support.
06.01.2022 Great news and thanks to Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass for her persistence and support in securing the funding that will allow this fabulous project to proceed. With Tasmania set to become a "go to" destination for active tourists following the easing of border restrictions and more people taking up bike riding around the state, this project will become an iconic destination. What a great active way It will be to see beautiful Northeast Tasmania, generating muc...h needed economic activity. The original funding lapsed following the delays caused by government requirements and the Legislative Council Inquiry. Dorset Council can now proceed with the necessary Development Applications and works.
05.01.2022 We've seen more people walking and riding around our local roads and paths. A great little video from We Ride, the national cycling promotion body. Email your council to ask what they are doing about improving bike and walking paths and talk to your councillors. Go to your council's web site for contacts.
04.01.2022 The rain has stopped, the sun is out, so tonight's ride is going ahead. Meet Di at Park St, Royal Park at 5.45 pm for an hour's ride around Launceston. Hi-Viz and lights recommended.

03.01.2022 Bob Blackman has been doing up bikes for charities for years. If you have an old bike you no longer need, you can donate it to Bob at the Launceston Big Picture School to help students hone their mechanic skills and raise money for refugees through UNHCR. If you need a bike, the students sell the upcycled bikes for just $20 at the school, or on Gumtree if they work on a better quality bike, and have raised about $9000 since the program first started. Visit Launceston Big Picture School at Inveresk or ring 6335 1500
03.01.2022 TBUG volunteers after a big clean up along Newnham Creek. 150kg of mainly plastic rubbish was collected.
03.01.2022 TBUG is an affiliated club of Cycling Tasmania. Cycling Tasmania has now agreed to join the national cycling organisation, Auscycling. This will bring together Mountain Biking, BMX and road cycling under a national body. We expect the Ride membership fees to be reduced under this reform and a more co-ordinated approach to training and advocacy. TBUG supported the amalgamation.
02.01.2022 TBUG is holding another great community Ride on Saturday December 12 leaving Park St Royal Park at 10:00am. This will be a fun and relaxing ride around Launceston trails and quiet streets. A great follow up to the Sallys Ride community and family rides!! No need to register just turn up...see you there and help make Launceston a Great Cycling City!
02.01.2022 Exploring the lanes around White Hills on today's 43km ride. Climbs were rewarded with fast downhills! Ebike numbers are increasing - four today, including three conversions. Lucky to be able to get out in perfect weather (admittedly a cool start).
02.01.2022 A stellar bunch of riders rolled between Cressy and Blackwood Creek today. Routes offered 44 or 52k options so there was something for everyone . Irrigation along the way ensured we all had a compulsory shower . Thanks Mick for planning and organising us all
