04.01.2022 Barefoot!! Should horses have shoes nailed to their feet? No of course they shouldn't! So why did some little Celt 2500 years ago nail some on? Was it because h...e had hit on a clever money making scheme? No it was because the feet of their horses were wearing down faster than they could grow. My boss was a third generation farrier he was forever telling people that for the amount they were doing with their horse, pony they would be better off riding it without shoes. Every farrier I know has no problem with clients not having shoes on their horses. Today's Horse is a man made product! Far removed from anything natural, the closest we have to a natural horse/pony is an Exmoor and I shoe very few of these. Most Thorobreds would be crippled if you did any serious work with them without shoes! So why has someone reinvented the concept of horses working without shoes? (By the way, if you Velcro boots on your horse it is not going barefoot!) it is because they have found a clever way to make some money! Barefoot go's very nicely with, bitless bridles, treeless saddles and natural horsemanship! A natural market ripe for clever con men to pick! Feed companies selling barefoot supplements, barefoot trimmers with little or no experience, no governing body, no qualifications, charging far more than is necessary and no comeback when your horse go's lame. I am surprised there are enough gullible, naive people out there to keep them going! See more
