The gold rush brought many Chinese migrants to this country along with their own traditional medicine. + Health care in colonial Australia was initially quite diverse. In the Victorian colony, indigenous healers coexisted with Chinese herbalists, naturopaths, homeopaths, and allopaths. It wasn’t until the later part of the 19th century that controversy began to arise around the scientific effectiveness of the various modalities. + It’s quite fascinating to think about how Chinese herbalists practiced in those days. Surely it would have been a long wait between shipments of herbs. One has to wonder if the Chinese herbalists substituted with indigenous plants and herbs when their supplies ran low. + What is your knowledge of the history of Chinese medicine in Australia?
