22.05.2022 Not unexpectedly, we’ve started to see cases of hypomagnesaemia (grass tetany) in cows in our region. While it’s older cows in peak lactation that are most sus...ceptible, other classes of stock can still be affected, particularly if other risk factors are present (e.g. short green pasture, cloudy weather, mustering/transport). Due to the very rapid progression of disease (leading to death in many cases), grass tetany can be very difficult to respond to and manage, but there are some strategies to reduce the risk. If possible, avoid grazing lactating cows on very short, green pasture. For stock grazing tetany-prone pastures or cereal crops, a loose lick containing magnesium oxide (‘Causmag’), salt, and lime should be available at all times. Intake of magnesium can be increased by spreading Causmag on hay or mixing it through grain this strategy can be used during higher risk periods. This advice featured in the May edition of Ag Advice. 23.01.2022 Did you lose boundary fencing bordering public lands during the 2019/20 bushfire season? If so, you could be eligible to receive a grant of up to $5,000 per k...ilometre to purchase fencing materials through the Supporting our Neighbours program. Applications are closing on Wednesday, 31 March 2021 so we are encouraging landholders to lodge their applications as soon as possible so they don’t miss out. These grants can also be issued retrospectively, so even if you have already rebuilt your boundary fences, you can still receive funding. For more information, eligibility criteria or to make an application, visit the website at www.lls.nsw.gov.au/fencing or call our team on 1300 778 080.

09.01.2022 2020 provided a great season for native wildflowers across the Central Tablelands. After some very tough seasons, rain was in good supply last year, and all the... wildflowers that have been hard to find, managed to flower prolifically last spring. And not only common wildflowers were on display our endangered species had a great flowering season as well! In good news for the Small Purple-pea, our searches were extremely successful, with a total of 13 new clusters of the endangered plant discovered in the Central Tablelands region, particularly in the Mudgee area. This brings the known populations in the Central Tablelands to 20, including several populations with more than 100 individual plants. The great seasonal conditions not only allowed us to discover these new populations, it also enabled us to collect seed from across the Central Tablelands to store in the National Seedbank to preserve the species’ genetic diversity. We also provided seeds to the Australian National Botanic Gardens to grow plants so that we can plant additional plants at some of the populations where numbers are currently low to help secure these populations into the future. Pictured are some of our very ecstatic Mudgee staff after finding a populous patch of Small Purple-pea.

01.01.2022 Timing is critical when it comes to mouse control Mice can have a severe impact on growers. Some regions are seeing high mouse activity, we are urging produc...ers to monitor crops and paddocks. The Mouse Alert website has loads of great resources for knowing your mouse numbers, monitoring paddocks and what to record. Check it out here http://bit.ly/360yWcJ The best way to get a handle on mouse numbers is to put out monitoring cards. Cards can be made from 10mm grid paper. Squares should be cut 100mm x 100mm and soaked in canola oil for 1 hour (Spraying each side of the card with canola spray also works well and is much easier). 10 cards are then placed 10 meters apart in the crop. They should be held down with fencing wire. Cards should be put out late afternoon and collected early morning. 10-15% taken indicates that there are enough mice to cause a problem. If you are getting these percentages or higher you need to consider your control options. GRDC have a great resource that provides practical info about mouse control - http://bit.ly/3p5M5sx
