21.01.2022 Transformation of the judiciary in South Africa. The Law Society of South Africa recently published figures which show how many judges and magistrates there are in South Africa. It also shows how many are from each ethnic group and how many are male and female. These figures can be seen on the two photos. There sure has been transformation over the past two decades! Some would say that this was long overdue and some would say it happened too quickly. Some would say it is for ...the better. I don't know where the correct answer lies. Not living there any more, but regularly being updated with the news, all I can do is quote from Rodriguez' song: "I wonder and worry my friend. I wonder, I wonder, I wonder, don't you?"

21.01.2022 AUSTRALIA TOPS OECD RANKINGS! A report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) ranked the 362 regions of its 34 member nations according to nine measures of well-being. The result had Australia at the top in the country-by-country rankings, followed by Norway, Canada, Sweden and the United States. ... Nine measures were used in the report: education, jobs, income (measured at purchasing power parity to correct for cost-of-living differences between countries), safety, health, environment, civic engagement, access to broadband and housing. An article in the New York Times, hailed Canberra as the place for an easy life, stating,[Its] down under but way above them all. The Australian Capital Territory led the regional rankings in the report, according to an average calculated by the New York Times. Five Australian states were also in the top 10. [The ACT outscored the rest of the country, including the states containing Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, on a number of measures, including education, income, jobs and health. (The O.E.C.D. did not measure access to beaches or world-famous opera houses.) (Redacted from MA)

14.01.2022 A number of amendments to the Migration Regulations as well as changes to the website of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, have led to a number of significant errors. The Department of Immigration and Border Protections digital team has updated the information on their website under the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Tourist Stream Document Checklist after an English language test suddenly seemed to be a requirement! The occupation "Primary School Teacher..." suddenly has grown wings and doesn't appear on the occupation list it is supposed to be on. We understand all these, and many others errors, are being addressed. Let us hope the errors are addressed as quickly as the Aussies lost their wickets in the first Ashes test!

08.01.2022 Australia is expected to receive an increased number of visa applications from prospective Greek migrants due to the economic crisis in Greece. Many will be joining their relatives down under. Melbourne alone has an estimated 300,000 Greeks, the largest grouping of Greeks outside of Athens and Thessaloniki. That may be why Melbourne has the best Greek restaurants outside Greece, in the world!

05.01.2022 I see Iceland is the #1 peaceful country in the world out of the 162 countries surveyed with New Zealand #4, Australia #9, the UK #39 and Zimbabwe coming in ahead of South Africa at #125 as opposed to South Africa's #136.

03.01.2022 MINISTER OF IMMIGRATION GRANTS SOUTH AFRICAN WIDOW AND CHILDREN PERMANENT RESIDENCE! We dont know how many of you recall this article that appeared in the newspapers in December 2014, about the South African widow Amanda Klue and her two young children who were facing imminent deportation from Australia. At that stage we found it concerning that a number of migration agents and lawyers were offering their services for free on social media sites, without having spoken to Ama...nda or ourselves. It was obviously a marketing exercise for them more than anything else, as the ethical and proper course would obviously have been to first contact Amanda or our practice, before posting anything on social media! In any event, Hendrik de Korte and Cedwynn Toweel from TdK Law Solicitors and Migration Lawyers in Brisbane petitioned the Minister of Immigration on behalf of Amanda and her children, acting on a pro bono basis. We are pleased to announce that the Minister exercised his discretion in their favour and they have all now been granted permanent residence in Australia. Congratulations to the family! We wish to express our gratitude to the many, many statutory declarations of support we received from members of the community to provide to the Minister, as well as to the Minister and last, but not least, to the great team at TdK Law for the sterling job. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au//amanda-klu/2475880/
