25.01.2022 Barry & Sabrina are incredible supporters of the school farm and particularly Tasman Hampshire Downs. Their generosity never ceases to amaze us. For the next two years we will have access to brilliant genetics through Evanstoke Flint. He will run with some of our ewes come January and we can’t wait to see the lambs at foot. Thank-you so much!... Australian Hampshire Down Breeders Association
25.01.2022 Year 11/12 students have been working hard getting the new fence up so the pigs can have more room to wander around. The boys experience is a part of their fencing unit for their Certificate II in Agriculture. Theyve put up ring lock and plain wire today, hung gates and will add in a section of post and rail as well as an electric offset. Keeping very busy.
24.01.2022 Students in primary classes are getting involved in reducing waste by learning all about what food scraps they can feed the chickens. This week each class received a bin for chook food and next week theyll learn all about compost before getting a compost bin for their class as well. Scraps will be brought up to the farm and put to good use. Thank-you to Tassal - Our Community for the grant to purchase the bins. ... Tasmanian Agricultural Education Network
24.01.2022 Year 6 transition day was all about hands-on experiences for students. This year they worked their way through different stations all about marking. 23.01.2022 The livestock team are disappointed that they cant defend their Livestock Cup title at Agfest Field Days, Tasmania this year but that hasnt stopped them getting involved. Check out the team at 1.06min being parked by the Beef Director (hes missing the event as well).
23.01.2022 High school and college students have been working hard together to turn an old concrete tank into a pig pen. They have poured the concrete floor and concreted in the poles ready for the pens to be built. They have all been hard workers, getting so much done as a team. Well done guys!
22.01.2022 Lambing is well and truly underway, with 8 lambs on the ground so far. Were very happy to currently have 6 ewe lambs, especially as last year we ended up with 0! Australian Hampshire Down Breeders Association... Australian Sheep Magazine See more
22.01.2022 Even with the current restrictions in place there are still great opportunities out there for students to get involved in the beef industry. Five of our very talented students have submitted entries into the Target Livestock & Marketing Virtual Junior Judging competition. Good luck ladies! Check out their video snippets in the comments to see how amazing they all are.... Tasmanian Agricultural Education Network
22.01.2022 Every now and then our ladies need a helping hand with their new bubs. One of our senior girls has given birth to a healthy ram lamb but her milk hasnt come in yet so were helping out with a couple feeds until she can feed him, and some oxytocin and udder massages for her to stimulate let down.
21.01.2022 Through an amazing mentoring program with the Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula, students are gaining access to a wealth of knowledge and skills. One of the projects being completed is the restoration of the farm's hot house. Dathan is learning practical skills such as grinding and welding as well as refining his maths knowledge. A huge thank-you to Rod for supporting this program and volunteering your time.
21.01.2022 Following on from yesterday's post we're happy to report that we no longer have a bogged tractor! A HUGE thank-you to Greg from Wylie Cartage and Contracting for taking some time out of his day (during a busy time of the year) to help us get it out. Community support is an integral part of keeping the school farm operating and we are so grateful.
20.01.2022 Yes, cheeky little piggy... you are very cute and playful (and apparently very good at escaping) but do you really think you should be at the feed shed?
19.01.2022 New life on the TDS farm. The new chicks are the first generation of Australian Langshans bred from chicks hatched by students.
19.01.2022 Year 4-6 students have been looking at the pork industry this term, getting down and dirty helping to raise our slips, investigating how pigs are raised and experimenting with sustainability. Methane capture is a great option for the industry’s sustainability as electricity is generated for power and heating. Students investigated how methane from manure could generate power by creating enough gas from bi-carb soda and vinegar to blow up a balloon. 18.01.2022 WOW!! A huge congratulations to Cheyenne who has taken out Reserve Champion in the Target Livestock & Marketing Virtual Junior Judging Pee Wee division. This is her first go at junior judging and she has done an amazing job in a national competition. We are so proud.
17.01.2022 Check out our amazing sheep team on the Nubeena and Tasman Community Bank Branch banner. The bank is a great supporter of the farm and the programs we offer.
17.01.2022 Today was the perfect day for spreading chicken manure on the farm. Thanks to Greg from Wylie Cartage & Contracting for doing a great job. Chicken manure is a great soil amendment because not only does it add nutrients for the plants but feeds the soil with organic matter, improves water holding capacity and adds beneficial soil organisms. Plus, its using up a waste product! Tasmanian Agricultural Education Network
17.01.2022 Completing a Certificate II in Agriculture gives students hands-on experience that they can take into the workplace. As part of their safety unit students completed a chemical (orange water) mixing scenario, making sure they had all their PPE on and did everything safely.
17.01.2022 It may not be 100% finished but we are excited at the progress were making with the updates of the pig area. The roof of the new pig pen has now gone on, ready for the slips to soon move in.
16.01.2022 Training has begun for our lambs, with some of the sheep handling team braving the icy winds to halter up 3 little ewes. Australian Hampshire Down Breeders Association
15.01.2022 When given the choice between computer time and being outside, a few of our primary students chose to be in the yards working cattle, and we can’t blame them! Year 3-5 students worked alongside the year 11-12 students getting the cattle weighed, vaccinated and drenched.
15.01.2022 Over the last 3 days weve had over 80mm of rain, so we werent overly surprised when the stormwater drains off the farm needed some TLC... but we were surprised when we opened up the man hole to discover this little fella.
15.01.2022 Its a bit earlier than expected but lambing has began at the farm. Tasman Lemon Tart has lambed a few weeks early, giving birth to twin girls. Can anyone suggest some names? (Our ewes are named after desserts) ... Australian Sheep Magazine Australian Hampshire Down Breeders Association

14.01.2022 With the students on holiday weve had to look to a younger volunteer base for help on the farm.
14.01.2022 It’s that time of the year again and with such a great season there’s plenty of good quality fodder out there at a low price, so we’re stocking up. We couldn’t go past some lucerne/grass bales from Jesse Webb at Colebrook and his generosity was incredible. After seeing that the truck could take a few more bales he gave us 6 for free!! Support from people in the agriculture community is integral to farm developments as we work towards increasing the farm’s financial sustainability and we are so thankful to everyone who helps us out.
14.01.2022 Our amazing sheep team dressed up in their new show shirts. A HUGE thank-you to Nubeena and Tasman Community Bank Branch for supporting the students with their uniform. They look amazing!
13.01.2022 To celebrate National Science Week Tasmania the 7/8 Food and Fibre class experimented with dairy, testing total solids and fat content. Each group set about testing Bream Creek Dairy Full Cream, Cream on Top and Light milk using a refractometer and the Magic Milk Experiment to see if they could guess which is which through total solids and fat data. 13.01.2022 As happy as pigs in mud Yesterday’s heat called for some extra mud pits to keep the girls cool. Unlike other livestock, pigs don’t have sweat glands so they splash around in mud to keep their temperature down on a hot day.
13.01.2022 Our students are showing the country just how amazing they are. 12.01.2022 We are so excited to have delivered our first pork orders today! Five of the slips hit the 60kg mark last week and went off to Gretna meatworks to be processed. Thanks to Michael for doing a great job with them. The next 5 will be heading off in a couple of weeks. Pork production is not only a great learning experience for our students, it also provides essential funds to support our programs. Well also be offering beef and lamb (and more pork) in the future, so keep an eye out. Tasmanian Agricultural Education Network
12.01.2022 It was an exciting day here at the farm with ABC filming the students for a tv segment. Prep-Year 12 students did a great job talking about what theyre learning on the farm and about the animals theyre looking after. We cant wait to see the finished product! Well done everyone. 12.01.2022 Year 9/10 students are tackling food wastage and household rubbish production this term with different creations. So far they have experimented with everything from homemade cleaners and gummies to pickled eggs, pickled gherkins and, sage, lemon and honey tea from the garden. They’re putting their great ideas into practice to reduce their carbon footprint.
11.01.2022 Our girls may be a bit bigger and a bit less cuddlier than some of the farm’s residents but they still love a good scratch as much as the next animal.
10.01.2022 It's that time of year again! Sharpen your pencils and sharpen your mind for the TDS Farm QUIZ NIGHT. Come and join us for a great night of fun and competition, raising money for the farm programs.
10.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the amazing mums, step-mums, foster mums, carers, grandmas and honorary mums. We hope you all had a fantastic day
09.01.2022 Our worm farm is delivering the goods! Year 2/3 students set up the worm farm at the end of last term as part of their horticulture unit and now it is producing great fertiliser that they can use on their garden beds. Most of the scraps that go to feeding the worms comes from the classrooms.

08.01.2022 Its an exciting day at the farm, with the first few panels of the new cattle yards going in. Thanks to a grant from the Beef Industry Trust weve been able to move and expand our yards. We have now dismantled the old yards, re-fenced paddocks, prepared ground and put up a new k-rail fence in preparation for the new set up.
08.01.2022 We’ve welcomed two goat bucklings to the school farm and after quite a few suggestions we’ve landed on the names Wallace and Gromit. 06.01.2022 The saying goes to make hay while the sun shines and today at Tasman the beautiful weather has meant weve been able to pour the slab for the cattle crush. The cattle yards are coming together and were so excited!
06.01.2022 Four of our ewes returned from Barry & Sabrinas Evanstoke Hampshire Down stud where they were A.I.d (Brownie & Trifle) or mated (Evanstoke Billy Bear). They have been with Donna & Michael Channing of Channing Downs Hampshire Down Stud for the past few weeks where they were able to feed on the lush green grass of Mole Creek. The school farm ewes are due to start lambing towards the end of June.

01.01.2022 Getting the cattle yards moved and extended has been a project across all grades from 7-12 (and even a little help from the 2-year old apprentice). It has given students the opportunity to put their maths skills to the test with practical problem solving. Designing and building the yards has involved calculating volumes (for concrete), area and perimeter, angles, length, height and more. Students have also gained many practical skills from boxing up and pouring a slab to building a ramp, constructing a k-rail fence and grading ground.
