25.01.2022 Banana oatmeal pancakes with honey for breakfast! What a great Saturday I remember learning to make pancakes for the first time on electric hotplates in the Scout Hall. There is quite an art to it, the balance of getting the pan hot enough to cook, yet not too hot or they burn #pancakes #foodie #breakfast #weekend #scienceteacher #foodchemistry #teacherondemandvic

24.01.2022 This right here is my motivation for teaching. There are some difficult conversations to have, decisions to be made and lessons to learn if the human race is to stop ruining the planet. This message proudly brought to you by one of my favourite presenters, Sir David Atten-bro (as my students like to call him...). Links to Australian Curriculum Cross-curriculum priority of sustainability, and also HHD VCE curriculum Unit 4. https://www.facebook.com/watch/

24.01.2022 Good morning It may be winter here in Melbourne but I still managed to spot this little guy outside on my walk today - a baby Blue Tongue lizard!

23.01.2022 It's Friday and we all know what that means - time for a cartoon! Today's edition features a Chemistry meme classic which reminds me of my Dad. He is known for getting into the good 'ol knee slap when he starts laughing! I love incorporating "lame" science jokes into my lessons. They offer a bit of an icebreaker and an opportunity to engage with students. Also, they make me smile

23.01.2022 September marks the start of Poorneet Tadpole Season on the Kulin Seasonal Calendar. Look out for increasing temperatures, flowering Flax-lilies and Myrnong, the call of the Pied Currawongs and equal lengths of day and night.

21.01.2022 I have been putting together some printable cards for VCE/Senior high school level Biology students. This set is for photosynthesis - Unit 3 includes the key inputs and outputs of the light dependent and light independent reactions for C3 plants. I thought these would be great for formative assessment in class, or as a revision activity. DM me if you would like a copy . . .#vcebiology #photosynthesis #studycards #studentresources #teachersofigau #victeachers #vce #teacher @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

21.01.2022 What are the adjustable parts of every lesson? OSCAR! A fellow teacher on Instagram recommended the book "Differentiation Instruction Made Practical" by Rhonda Bondie and Akane Zusho. . Anything that proclaims to take a scientific approach to teaching has my attention! Whilst much of the theoretical background about motivation and how we learn was not new to me, I found this book offered a fresh perspective on approaching differentiation in the classroom. .... . OSCAR is one tool you can use to identify adjustable parts of each lesson which can then be tailored to meet different needs of your students in various ways. This book has taken me a while to get through, but it has been a valuable refresher, and prompted me to try a few of the processes with my tutoring students online. . . On a side note - one of the reasons this book is taking me so long to read is the overwhelming number of acronyms! I am trying to keep tabs on them all, but I feel the flow of some chapters is lost a little because I keep having to backtrack and remember what each acronym means. I am hoping that once I become more familiar with them it will become easier. See more

21.01.2022 Love our morning magpie chats! Magpies have gotten a bit of a reputation for swooping, being dubbed "singing assassins". I think they are misunderstood - Magpies actually have a really good memory and can recognise people! Once they know you are a nice person, then you will be friends for life - likewise if you treat them poorly they will remember that too. I often chat to the locals on my morning walks. Sometimes it seems they understand every word I say... #magpies #ausbirds #mindfulness #naturewalks #environment #scienceteacher #healthteacher

21.01.2022 CERES online experiences available now :)

20.01.2022 Talking to a student over the weekend about access and equity in relation to Health & Human Development got me thinking (again) about how relevant this subject is to life. And now is definitely the time to talk about equity as the world seems to finally be listening! . . I played around with the VCE study design, making a word cloud to represent the key concepts for students. I think it works well to show how health is complex and interconnected to every part of life. What do you think? Have you used word clouds before?

18.01.2022 JOHN MARSDENS TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. Give children space. Back off. Let them roam. Let them be bored. Don't over-plan their lives. Cut way back on the after-scho...ol activities programs. 2. Keep away from all those ghastly, soulless, sterile playgrounds. Keep away from shopping malls. Look for real places. Wild places. 3. Be an adult. Say no to your children at least once a day. If the role of Adult in your family is vacant, then one of your children will fill it. And it won't be pretty. 4. Don't take up all the space. If you are dominating, loud, forceful, your children are highly likely to become passive, lacking spirit and personality and/or sullen. 5. Believe about 40 per cent of the dramatic stories your children tell you of the injustices, corruption and satanic practices happening at school. 6. Teach them empathy. For example, after their jubilant victory celebrations when they win a sporting match, remind them that their jubilation was only possible because someone else the losers have been made to feel awful. 7. Help them develop language skills. Don't finish their sentences for them. Don't correct them when they mispronounce a word they'll work it out sooner or later. Ask them open-ended questions, that need a detailed answer, not Yes/No questions. 8. Make sure they have regular jobs/duties at home and that those jobs are done to a consistently high standard. 9. Don't whinge endlessly about the miseries of your adult life. A lot of children now are fearful about growing up because their parents paint such a grim picture of the awfulness ahead. 10. Teach them to be very wary of people who Absolutely Know the Absolute Truth about Absolutely Everything! The colour of truth is always grey. Extreme positions are for the ignorant. Every creature, every person and every situation is complex. The universe is a wonderful mystery.

17.01.2022 On my kitchen shelf at the moment are two fine specimens! On the left is a cutting of Lemon Verbena, and on the right is Rosemary. This is a very easy activity for Science or Biology plant asexual reproduction. You just take a cutting of your chosen plant and put it in water! You can see roots growing on mine, these have taken a few weeks to develop, some patience is required...

16.01.2022 My pint-sized penpals have struck again! So much gratitude for these kids. I miss them irl. Ive been riding the Corona-coaster this week I must say. This too shall pass my Melbourne friends. Much love #snailmail #penpals #isolife #covidlockdown #teacher #ilovemelbourne

14.01.2022 Regrann from @buttmanoriginal - loving your work! Cigarette butts are highly toxic and take up to 10 years to break down. When they wash into the waterways they pollute the water and kill plants and animals. Let's do something about it - tomorrow is #5buttsonfriday so keep your eyes open, pick up 5 butts and help our environment! #scienceteacher #healthteacher #environment #saynotolitter

14.01.2022 Just setting up for an online tutoring session with one of my students - Yay!

14.01.2022 I spent Saturday afternoon preparing for VCE HHD Unit 4. I have been colour-coding the key knowledge and skills, then using these colours to code my teaching resources (ppts, notes, activities etc). I have done lots of reading, gathering and writing questions. All ready for my next tutorial

12.01.2022 Available on ABC iView now. Check it out

12.01.2022 I was lucky enough to join a Biology Teachers Network Zoom meeting this week. Our guest speaker Dr Scarlett Howard presented findings from her research at Deakin Uni all about Bee Biology Scarlett's research continues... and if you live in Australia you can be a part of it! Take a picture of a bee or insect and upload it to Flickr for your chance to win monthly prizes! These photographs will help researchers show the distribution of bee species in different areas within Australia. Pretty cool!! Look up @BeesAtHomeAus on Facebook and Flickr for more info.

12.01.2022 Coming out of a fun weekend of catching up on the updates to VCE study designs for 2020! . Thankfully some content has been removed to allow year 12 students to be able to finish the course in time to sit their exams by the end of 2020. . Now time for me to set up my tutoring plan for the rest of the year!

10.01.2022 Today we went back into stage 3 lockdown and I went for my morning dog walk in frosty Melbourne. I spotted this "fluffy" defrosting in the beautiful morning sun. I am so grateful to still be allowed to go outside. . . Staying curious, present and enjoying the small things. Hang in there Melbourne!

08.01.2022 Happy Friday!!! I hope you enjoy this one from @beatricebiologist , one of my favourite science cartoonists

07.01.2022 Don't forget to Breathe... I remind myself every single day -especially the breathe out part! Breathing is an autonomic body function, which means we do not consciously think about it all the time. I mean, that would be impractical because we would have to do it ALL the time! When we get stressed and our bodies go into "fight or flight" mode to prepare to face danger (real or perceived), some of the physical effects are increased heart rate, shaking, dilated pupils and tunn...el vision. This is intense if it happens a lot! Breathing techniques are one way you can calm it down. Check out the free beyond blue relaxation breathing exercises here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au//stayin/relaxation-exercises

07.01.2022 It's #5buttsonfriday ! I might have found a few more than five this time. Has anyone else been picking up litter today?

07.01.2022 Got tired of being on the library waiting list, so I bought myself a present! Can't wait to read these two . Thanks @neighbourhoodbooks for the home delivery, this will make iso 2.0 much better

06.01.2022 This morning I found this meditation on the @reachout_aus website called "WTF is mindfulness". It is fantastic! Perfect for anyone who is skeptical about meditation. . Link: https://au.reachout.com/artic/wtf-is-mindfulness-meditation for anyone who wants to try it!

05.01.2022 For some students, by the time they get to high school they have developed a bad relationship with Science. This has always challenged me to make my lessons relevant, interesting and spark curiosity. . The pandemic has highlighted misconceptions in the general public's understanding of scientific concepts. Some I have noticed include how the immune system works, vaccinations, genomic sequencing, viruses, interpreting graphs and data and the peer review process. Science liter...acy is vital for reducing fear and understanding why we are being locked down, told to social-distance and wash our hands. . It is alarming, but not surprising, that people in Melbourne are refusing to be tested for COVID-19 citing a "government conspiracy". To me, this shows we still have work to do! Thankfully the ABC Coronacast podcast has been an excellent source of reliable coronavirus information. Thank you Dr Norman Swan and Tegan Taylor! See more

04.01.2022 made me giggle. Regrann from @feelwelcome Tumblr account. #sciencejokes #scienceteacher

04.01.2022 How vaccines work...

03.01.2022 It is beginning to feel a lot like winter here in Melbourne right now! I must say I am not a fan of the darkness but I am appreciative of all the rain we have been getting this year. . A change in seasons is a reminder that life does not stand still, change is inevitable. There may be less sunshine, colder temperatures and snow on the peaks - but there is an upside! . There are also slow-cooked meals, hot chocolates and cosy nights by the fire. We cannot control the seasons..., so the next best thing is to embrace the change and go with the flow. Welcome to winter everyone! . What is your favourite thing about winter? How do you use the seasons for learning in your class? Let me know :) See more
