20.01.2022 Teaching for Impact (TFI) is a youth-led organisation that aims to create meaningful impact within the community through teaching. Nelson Mandela once said: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. The TFI community will use education to fight social inequity and make an impact on the lives of those in need. The idea is simple. We organise high-quality educational initiatives with the dual purpose of supporting students in their studies... and raising much-needed funds for important local community causes. We have an exciting schedule planned for this year. Follow us on social media, help us spread the word, and keep your eyes peeled for further updates!
16.01.2022 An incredible opportunity for those passionate about teaching to learn more about the latest in COVID-19 research and the lessons we could learn from how humanity has responded to pandemics in the past!
14.01.2022 Today, we celebrate Nelson Mandela, who was born on this day in 1918. The first black President of South Africa, Mandela understood the intrinsic value of education in changing the fate of an individual, a community, and a country.
14.01.2022 Stress eating? Imagining the cholesterol from your Stalactites coursing through your circulatory system? What happens next??? Join Cherry Shi, your lecturer for Friday, on a journey through the clinical sciences that underpin cardiovascular disease! Cherry Shi is an Austin clinical school student who has recently been through the struggles of MD1. Her interest and experience in student education can be demonstrated by her involvement in the General Workshops Subcommittee for MDSCx 2020, as well as her past role as the Public Lecture Manager for the Melbourne University Health Initiative and class tutor at Breakthrough Education. As a past member of Rotaract Australia, she was also involved in education projects raising funds for important causes such as bowel cancer and disaster relief.

Our team has worked hard in the break, improving our lectures in response to the feedback received and now we are back with many exciting events planned ahead. We sincerely thank each individual that contributed towards our initiative in our previous four lectures and are glad that students have found them helpful. So far we ...have raised $1541 for our 2020 initiative. The 2nd half of our MD1 Revision Lecture Series will commence on September 18th. Events will be posted weekly and we strongly advise you to include these dates in your timetable and book your tickets. We look forward to see you all and call out to previous participants to invite friends that may also benefit. Every and any contribution is appreciated!

03.01.2022 TFI is delighted to introduce our first initiative for 2020: the MD1 Fundraising Revision Lecture Series. The 8-part lecture series will be held to support our friend and colleague, Karin Gunatilake, to make it through her final year of medical school and cover all major elements of the MD1 curriculum. Karins Story... A Sri Lankan citizen and final year medical student at the University of Melbourne Karin moved to Australia 7 years ago. She has consistently worked hard to support herself, working most days of the week (including the notorious night shift at the Bourke St McDonalds in the CBD) in hospitality while continuing to complete her placement. She is also an avid sportswoman, playing touch football and rugby religiously. She is determined in her work, sports and education to the extent that not one, but two ACL reconstructions couldnt even keep her out of the game for long. Due to special circumstances, Karins family can no longer contribute to her international fees for medical school and no matter how hard she tries, she is unable to pay for her final year tuition alone. Sadly, her various attempts to gain financial support have mostly been turned down as she is not an Australian citizen. Fees for the final year of Melbourne Medical School amount to $88,864 (of which she has contributed $20,000 worth of savings). Karin is still working 20+ hours per week and in need of our support. In the future, Karin intends to pursue orthopaedic surgery. She also plans to apply for citizenship when she graduates and spend her career working in the country she has come to love. She has also discovered just how difficult it is to get support as an international student and commits to paying back the total funds raised in the form of a scholarship intended to support students just like her. Coming Up The first lecture in the series will cover all high-yield content from the Cardiovascular Block. Details are as follows: Date: Friday, 24 July Time: 6.00 PM to 8.00 PM Location: Zoom meeting (link will be sent to individual students upon registration through TryBooking) Registration Link: https://www.trybooking.com/BKMIV While there is no mandatory registration fee, we do ask that all students make a donation in good faith, however small, to Karins cause on registration for each lecture. In medicine, we pride ourselves on looking out for one another, and a contribution from each student, even as little as $5 (the price of a cup of coffee), can collectively make a world of difference.
