24.01.2022 # !! 1125262(WHO)(BIA) The European Parliament recently passed two resolutions that contain Taiwan-friendly language.... One supports Taiwan's participation in the WHO, as well as condemns China's handling of the #COVID19 pandemic. The other one urges the European Commission to start the scoping exercise and impact assessment in order to formally commence trade negotiations with #Taiwan as soon as possible.

23.01.2022 WHA # #WHO ... 7311/9-14 #WHA # (9) # # # WHA #2758 # # # # # # WHO WHO # 11/6 UN WHO Andrew Bremberg # WHA # # # # #50 # # Although the success of the #TaiwanModel of #PandemicPrevention has allowed many countries to understand that #Taiwan’s inclusion in the #WorldHealthOrganization is not just necessary, but also the fair thing to do, we did not receive an invitation to the resumed session of the 73rd World Health Assembly. On the first day, a proposal for a supplementary agenda item entitled Inviting Taiwan to participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer was discussed using the two plus two debate arrangement, with China, Cuba and Pakistan arguing against the proposal. Their arguments didn’t give any consideration to developments over the past year, instead focusing on UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which dates back to 1971, recognizing the People's Republic of China (PRC) as "the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations" and false claims that appropriate alternative arrangements have been made for Taiwan’s participation in global health systems. Our allies #Nauru, #Eswatini, the #MarshallIslands and #Honduras took a more macro and objective perspective, praising Taiwan’s efforts in regard to the #COVID19 pandemic and stating their very real concern that there should be no gaps in the global pandemic prevention effort. Taiwan shouldn’t be excluded from the organization’s systems, meetings, mechanisms, and activities for political reasons, as this undermines the reputation of the organization as a whole. They called for the Taiwanese people to be treated on a par with other people around the world, and for their right to take part in global public health systems to be respected. On November 6, Ambassador Andrew Bremberg, permanent representative of the United States of America to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, issued a statement in support of Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHO on the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Geneva’s website. He subsequently posted a video appealing to WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to invite Taiwan to attend the WHA. We appreciate the #US government's long-standing support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations. 20.01.2022 Hear hear "We are more effective when we work together, and include all experiences and lessons learned to defeat the pandemic and rebuild our economies. The United States highlights in this regard the important contributions that Taiwan could make to these discussions, as well as other aspects of COVID-19 response, if they were allowed to participate fully as an observer to WHO’s technical work." -Garrett Grigsby Director of the Office of Global Affairs of the #US Department of Health and Human Services

18.01.2022 Director-General Fiona H.C. Fan participated in Australian Business Summit Council’s (ABSC) media conference. The event was hosted by ABSC’s President, Dr Frank Alafaci, to promote this year’s issue of EKONOMOS, where 14 diplomatic or business leaders contributed articles to express their views, our DG Fan was one of them. ABSC was established in 2018 with the goal of promoting business relations with Australia and abroad. Its yearly issued business magazine, EKONOMOS, covers... a wide variety of topics spaning across regions and sectors. In her speech for today’s event, Ms Fan depicted Taiwan’s excellent measures and results in COVID prevention, allowing it to avoid any lock downs, and being one of the only few major economies to maintain positive GDP growth this year. She cautioned the long lasting effect of shut downs and large scale disinvestments caused by the lock downs still remains uncertain, yet believes that strong trade will be a key to our road to recovery. Taiwan and Australia already share a strong and extensive trade relation, and with Taiwan ranking 10th in economic freedom, 12th in global competitiveness and 4th in innovative capabilities, there are definitely more opportunities for Australian businesses. Taiwan has also recently launched the Six Core Strategic Industries, developing Taiwan’s core competitiveness in ICT, biotech, national defense, green energy, cyber security and strategic stockpiles. Many of these areas are strong suits for Australia, providing further opportunities for business collaborations. Finally, Ms Fan is confident that Taiwan is now one of the safest places to travel, and encourages everyone to have a tour and see our beatific natural sceneries and taste our world class eateries once borders are reopened. This March, Taiwan and Australia exchanged export-controlled medical raw materials, mutually assisted each other. After that in September, Taiwan donated 500 thousands of medical masks to the hard-hit state of Victoria. Furthermore, until mid-October, Taiwan has provided 54 million medical masks and hundreds thousands of PPEs to more than 80 countries.
