18.01.2022 Thank you so much. Ivy was very excited to get her special package in the mail today and cant wait to take it to show and tell when she is back at school! Ivy is a very brave. She had a reaction when she was only 17 months old with no known allergies. Her mother arrived home from work to find her red and pulling at her throat slightly (she was home with her daddy) she also had a few lumps on her. Thinking it was chickenpox they took her to a GP clinic as soon as possible.... The first doctor wanted a second opinion and they decided it was an allergy and prescribed her Prednisolone and suggested a review appointment. Mama left the doctor not feeling confident with what was said and unsure about what was prescribed so rang her sister who is an ICU nurse at the RCH. She came straight over and together they decided to take her to hospital (in hind sight they agree they should have called an ambulance). On arrival at the RCH, almost 2hrs post eating..... she immediately started vomiting and was taken into triage who took one look at her bright red body/heart rate was racing at 220. She was rushed to resus and immediately given adrenaline. This repeated with another 3 doses of adrenaline and then IV infused adrenaline over night in ICU. She was a tiny 8.5kg at the time. The Doctors told her family how incredibly lucky they were and that if they had of followed the instructions from the GP she may have died at home. I still think how lucky we were and how trusting my motherly instincts saved her. The RCH said she was very lucky it was a slow moving anaphylactic reaction. We identified the allergen to 1/4 of a cashew she nibbles off the top of a biscuit - it only took that tiny amount. She is diagnosed at risk of Anaphylaxis to both cashew and pistachio. Most people think that a reaction will be instant. And I can not tell you how many people think its just another allergy and dont understand how serious it can actually be if exposed. Thank you for all the hard work you do. Ivy is practising her training pen on all of us! #anaphylaixis #epipen #foodalleergy #peanutallergy #allergymum #allergymom #allergies #nutallergy
17.01.2022 OMGosh! We have just stepped into our own food allergy utopia. @glutenfree4u in Frankston were lovely in helping us choose meals for us. Dean was amazed he could eat anything in the shop as they were all gluten and nut free! They also have some dairy and egg free items. There are many stores so check them out.
17.01.2022 Care Giver Anxiety: As a community we probably home cook a lot more than most families to cater for our food allergies. Is anyone struggling to find safe food in the supermarket?

15.01.2022 After reports from the allergic community about the availability of FreeFrom & alternative foods, we've joined forces with Allergy UK & BSACI to send a joint letter to major supermarkets asking for their help to intervene. Please read our open letter: http://ow.ly/sL4h50ySXzr
15.01.2022 Question: I had 3 shots of adrenaline over the course of 12hrs on Friday after a reaction to almond meal. Ive only ever had one shot at a time, and now I have a HUGE headache. Has anyone else experienced this??
15.01.2022 Member Question: Hello, Just a quick Q, our 6.5month old daughter now has 2 epi pens (peanuts). We have read that for children and adults, a second epi pen can be administered after 5min if no response to the first. Does this also apply for an infant? If no, what age does this apply to? Thanks.
14.01.2022 Thanks Jane for sharing this adorable and important Food Allergy message
14.01.2022 Does your child know how to use their life saving auto injector? If so, what age did they learn? If not, whats holding them back?
14.01.2022 New Ingredient Warning: Egg! Farmwood Chimen Nuggets from Aldi A member has alerted us to the fact this now contains egg. Their child has suffered an allergic reaction and being monitored in hospital. It’s very easy as parents to assume a trusted brand will not change ingredients. One would assume they would make their customers aware if a top allergen is now being used. But we cannot rely on this and it’s a good reminder to check each label, every single time.
14.01.2022 I just wanted to share a proud parent moment. Miss 11 (ana to peanuts and tree nuts) came home from school yesterday saying that a pre-service teacher had offer...ed the class chocolate, Miss 11 immediately checked the ingredients which stated they contained peanuts, when she told him she was allergic to peanuts he was unaware. Miss 11 went straight to the teacher made them aware and asked if the students could sanitise their hands after eating. I am so proud she had the confidence to check and then speak up and advocate for herself. Even though I may annoy her with how much I tell her to check ingredients, I am so relieved that she listened and was able to take action. I have already written to the teacher to discuss this issue and to look at ways to make sure this doesn't happen again. I have a question. Does anyone know if allergies are covered at Uni for pre-service teachers?
13.01.2022 Something to keep in mind

Just wondering if you guys could link me to someone or perhaps do a shout out on the page to find someone?

10.01.2022 Gabriella is 14 and has been anaphylactic to tree nuts from age 3. She also suffers from asthma and hayfever. She never complains and is very aware of the foods she can and cannot have and educates her peers, especially at school. She is a very mature 14 year old and very diligent when it comes to having her different medication every day. I never have to prompt or ask her if she has taken it. She was so happy when she received her Teddy Medic in the mail!

09.01.2022 SINGULAIR (montelukast) FDA: "We continue to receive reports of mental health side effects reported with montelukast [Singulair] use. Also, if Singulair works for your child (or you), that's great. We only want to share these side effects in case you are not aware. <3
08.01.2022 A teacher in France receives a suspended sentence for the anaphylactic reaction of a child in her care. Distressing content to read but important to share this story. This story reminds me of our experience at a Melbourne kinder. Its so important to follow the ASCIA plan.
08.01.2022 WARNING- Graphic Video circulating via Social Media (updated advice and support resources) Dear Parents/Guardians, The eSafety Commissioner is aware of distressing reports there is a video of a man taking his life circulating on social media Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Tik Tok. eSafety has contacted social media companies about the reports and will continue working with them to monitor the situation.... 05.01.2022 Member Post: Just a FYI for any families that have children or loved ones with inhalant reactive anaphylaxis... DUSK have a fragrance oil for their diffusers called Mood Mist and all the fragrances contain Almond Oil. They have small signs up on the product display but not big enough to read unless you are fully concentrating. Just wanted to warn anyone in the community. Would hate for someone to go in there and have an anaphylactic reaction. This would if been the case with our family today of my two boys were with me!
05.01.2022 Just in time for RUOK Day, we are giving away ten Teddy Medics with EpiPen trainer! Please tag an Allergy Hero below and we will select ten lucky winners! Thanks to Mylan for the support in this initiative Be sure to follow us on Insta @TeddyMedic as well! Tomorrow is #RUOKDay! But every day is an opportunity to reach out those around us who are doing it tough and start a conversation that could change a life. Living with severe food allergies can be difficult and impact... day to day quality of life. We highly encourage our community to open up a supportive dialogue and show our fellow allergy family that they are not alone and support is available. Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about it isnt behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or theyre just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes youve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them theyre supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know youre someone who cares enough to ask. More at ruok.org.au

03.01.2022 Member question: My daughter is starting school next year. How many Epi pens do you have? We already have two, but given we probably will keep one at school Im thinking its time to buy a third? Thoughts?
02.01.2022 Recommendations from the Parliamentary Inquiry into Anaphylaxis. Lots of valuable information and insight - worth the read https://parlinfo.aph.gov.au//Walkingtheallergytightrop/pdf
01.01.2022 Member Question: Hi guys. Just wanted to ask a quick question. We received an updated medical plan from our sons school yesterday to sign off on. We noticed that in their plan it states that in case of anaphylactic emergency he is to be taken to the sick bay for the EpiPen to be administered. In the ASCIA action plan it states that the patient is to be layed flat or sitting and not to walk. When we approached the school about this they were adamant that it was their plan that he has to be tacked to the sick bay first. Just wondering wheee we stand on this issue and should we follow the ASCIA action plan ? Thanks
01.01.2022 We know the human body is complicated, and a much bigger space than the blood alone. And there are certain tissues, like those in the digestive system where, if someone has food allergy, the reaction starts, says Boyd. And we had reason to suspect there may be a whole separate aspect of the immune system thats localized to the tissues of the gut and the digestive system, and that those would be worth studying.
