24.01.2022 Teeth grinding, also called bruxism often occurs unconsciously while you sleep and is considered to be stress-related. Teeth grinding can also be caused by slee...p disorders and can cause serious damage to your teeth and jaw. Dr Keating's choice of treatment will depend on the cause of your grinding, but you may be fitted with a mouthguard or occlusal splint to protect your teeth while you sleep. 06.01.2022 Got a teenager? Then read this :-) An interesting time for both parents and the children alike. Although puberty marks the onset of adolescence, in actuality, t...his happens a lot earlier ie pre teen, 9-10 yrs, teen etc. As a parent, you still need to be diligent about their oral health. What are the particular dental risks that teens are prone too? 1. Food Fads Teenagers do not always exercise wise food choices. Frequent snacking, snacking of a particular type of food, increase intake of soft drinks, sweet drinks, all could be food fads that teenagers could follow. An unbalanced carbohydrate rich diet can result in obesity, and decay. Children whom we followed up from childhood, could suddenly develop a lot of decay, from these cariogenic dietary changes. 2. Poor Oral Hygiene Parents relinquish duty of toothbrushing to their teen, and so they should, but not all teens brush properly - even though they know how. Lack of time, cramming for exams, poor study habits leading to late nights, can result in oral hygiene routines missed. 3. Hormonal changes Can make gums more prone to gingivitis in the presence of plaque. Red and swollen gums, gums that bleed on brushing are indicators of gum disease in your teen. 4. What do you do? the last thing teenagers need is a nagging parent. Make sure your child does not miss his dental check ups. Even as dentists, we nag our patients to brush and we never let up!! We use use different educational aids to motivate and teach. Check their toothbrush is not worn down. On the other hand, pristine brushes could mean they have not been brushing. Make sure they are using an adult toothpaste, for maximum protection. The Smile Club cares for your child from age to age 18. After the age of 18, your child then graduates to a general dentist. If you have any concerns or worries about your teen, please don't hesitate to call us on 9443 3922.
