21.01.2022 Another week, another Kogan Full Android Tv sale. This time it’s a bit on the small size vs what we are used to with our standard being 65’+ but this little 50’ will be just as powerful as its big brothers when we have finished testing and configuring it before delivery. The next step after deboxing is to attach its brand new 2TB external hard drive via usb port, install a tone of apps from PlayStore and configure Kodi to handle all free to air tv and radio with a full EPG gu...ide and recording options. Finally the 8BitDo game pad will be attached and RetroArch will be configured to handle emulation for EVERY TYPE OF CONSOLE AND ARCADE GAME UP TO THE PS3. Naturally being a full Bluetooth gamepad it can be used with native android games when downloaded from PlayStore as well. Even though this customer didn’t buy an external keyboard and mouse to go with the package we will install Firefox web browser and Gmail just in case. A hour after this Tv is delivered the customer will be able to surf the web, play Android & Console Games via emulation, watch and record all free to air Australian Tv and radio stations, stream from ANY service that exists (Netflix, Stan, Binge etc) as well as anything else they ever want to do. Being FULL ANDROID it is only limited by having the right hardware attached via USB and downloading the required app from PlayStore. They are like giant android tablets with no touch screen built in and they can do just as much with the right tech and setup supporting them. As an example this entire post was made using the Android Facebook app and a USB keyboard/mouse on our office Tv* and the photos were taken via an attached webcam which we can also use for Skype/Zoom etc. *A 65 Inch Kogan. Why people continue to buy brand name overpriced tech when a generic device that is based on Googles open source standards for Android Tv can do so much more for less has always confused us. Luckily it seems more and more people are learning the truth if our sales metrics are anything to go by. This Tv like everything we sell is as a direct agent for the company in question meaning we match the price listed at their site + post when it comes to cost and we work as the point of return should there be a warranty issue. So if you want help with anything tech related feel free to message and we will be glad to help you find the RIGHT tech for the job, not the one with the most fashionable logo.

19.01.2022 We are specialists at solving Internet & Mobile coverage issues but we are unable to provide a solution if a customer won’t let us. If you are stuck in a Satellite NBN or Mobile Blackspot Location in our region there is literally only 2x options to solve the problem, both detailed below:- The first is to actually boost available mobile signal but to do this requires buying and installing a CelFi Signal Repeater/Booster along with a relevant MiMo/Yagi Antennae and using the ...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Hi everyone, we are getting a lot of messages asking why peoples NBN internet services are suffering drop outs or running really slow and every address when checked on the site linked to below has been connected via Fibre To The Node (FTTN). This means the issue is most likely caused by water getting into the 100 year old pits that hold the 80 year old copper that is used to link FTTN connections to the green Fibre mains cabinets found near any applicable street and unfortuna...tely there is nothing that can be done about it. It’s a bad situation to be in and is a side effect of the NBN build being changed from a 3x tech mix network where Fibre was going to be used to replace ALL copper trunks to a 12x tech hybrid-mesh one where the old Telstra copper network is bridged to the NBN Fibre back-haul lines in places deemed viable (most country towns). You can attempt to register a complaint with your ISP in a hope that NBN Co will resolve the issue but the second the copper trunk dries your service will be back to full speed and NBN Co will claim it's working as it should, which normally amounts to a huge waste of time and effort for no gain. Alternatively you can always change to Optus Mobile Broadband if speed and stability is more important to you then data limits which we can sell and setup as registered agents for Optus. Sorry we know it’s not what people want to hear but we can’t fix the problem as it’s outside our control. We agree that it’s not how the NBN should be but that’s the policy the majority voted for and we have been given exactly what we were promised. https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/rollout-map https://www.optus.com.au//mobile-broad/modems/huawei/b818

18.01.2022 Here at TekHed we regularly get asked if we can fix smart phones and other such devices like tablets and the answer is always yes. Unfortunately there is A LOT of variables and exact steps that must be accounted for and smart device repair is a very complicated thing to provide. First thing to note is we do not set our own repair prices, since we only use official parts we price match ourselves to having the same repair done by Samsung or Apple. ...Continue reading

15.01.2022 This is our guide to help anyone in the region to solve problems with internet and Tv access, it uses off the shelf tech and freely available knowledge and can be installed by anyone without a license. If you need mobile coverage as well then look into WiFi Calling which is detailed in one of the links found below and remember solutions are out there you just have to know where to look. Step One:- Buy an Android Tv box for $50 from eBay.... Step Two:- Once it arrives connect it to your Tv via HDMI cable and run setup, once online via WiFi download and install apps from PlayStore (Netflix, Stan, Disney+, etc). Step Three:- If you want Free To Air Tv access install Kodi and follow the linked to guide to setup IPTV and you can use your internet connection to access all Tv and Radio Stations in Australia. If your internet service isn’t up to the task due to being in the middle of nowhere get Optus Mobile Broadband and a MiMo Antennae, and if you need better WiFi signal throughout your house buy a WiFi repeater (as always linked to below). And if you need help setting any of this up or want to buy it all as one giant pre-configured and delivered package TekHed can help as they have sold and setup this type of tech in the region for 15 years and counting. Though generally we would advocate you do it yourself, it’s really not that hard or costly to do so. https://www.ebay.com.au//TV-Box-Android-7-1-/392753679943 https://kodidroid.com/iptv-au-kodi-addon-freeview-australia/ https://www.optus.com.au//mobile-broad/modems/huawei/b818 https://onwireless.com.au/dual-11dbi-all-band-3g-dc-4g-lte- https://www.ebay.com.au//300Mbps-Wireless-WL/192019084598 https://www.optus.com.au//mo/network/coverage/wifi-calling

13.01.2022 Another day, another repair we are confronted with which is possible but it’s outside the expense level that the customer was willing to pay. With most laptops there is 2x common issues at a hardware level that occurring regularly that due to not having the $100K of needed equipment we can’t solve inhouse. The first is hard drives or storage devices that have a life readout of less than 10% when checked with Hard Disc Sentinel as said data volumes become impossible to read on...Continue reading

11.01.2022 The following is a photo of the inside of an iPhone 7 we have been asked to fix. The customer who brought it to us was adamant that they had not attempted repair previously and that ALL IT NEEDED was a new screen, fortunately here at TekHed we like performing PROPER REPAIRS so we insisted that it be put through diagnosis before we quoted on the cost to do so. Luckily this customer listened as so far after removing the supremely damaged screen we have found gunk build up on th...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Here at TekHed we have always had a real problem with Apple and the core reason is the fact they charge far too much for technology when comparing specs to price. Generally the rule of thumb has always been you can get double the power from a Laptop for the same price as an Apple product. OSX (Apple operating system) on the other hand is actually quite good if you’re willing to be locked into using only software they accept.... This is why our head admin loves Hackintoshes as you get all the simplicity of OSX and the open ended hardware architecture of a PC. Its also how any child associated with TekHed who is forced to participate in the Apple Only system the local schools have adopted would get a MAC as its much cheaper than buying a Apple branded one outright. Heck our own Admin runs a VMWare install with OSX as a virtual machine right beside Windows on his own system he has grown to like it so much. Currently TekHed can build a Hackintosh with a 500GB Hard Drive and all the required hardware specs a user would want from a daily use machine for $600 max. But as with all things based on public domain nerd knowledge nothing is stopping you from doing it yourself, as the following guide covers. As always if it’s too complicated (or you just cant be bothered) and you are still interested feel free to message us and someone will respond ASAP. https://hackintosh.com/

09.01.2022 A follow on from our post made earlier today, in the linked to video you can see the process for performing Ultra-Sonic cleaning on a Smart Phone mainboard. As touched on in the previous post, this is an important step in fixing any smart device that have become wet or overly dirty during use and it is skipped by 99% of business offering repairs AU wide. If not performed it can lead to board death as rott and corrosion occurs and at this stage your mainboard will need to be r...eflowed which is neigh impossible on smart phones. The highly vaunted rice trick does not solve the problem and is only guaranteed to make corrosion occur faster so while it might save your phone today it will kill it tomorrow. There is such a thing as standards in the industry but they are not enforced and tech repair as a whole is unregulated in our country. It makes having any form of ethics a hindrance as every time you try and provide truthful information on subjects opposing voices that profit from the misinformation will rally against it. TekHed will always aim to be absolutely truthful in there endeavors to the point where we know it is detrimental on our income but we could not live with ourselves if we didn't. Band-aid repairs hurt the industry as a whole and give ammunition to the Mega-Corporations who use them as examples of why NO ONE BAR THOSE WHO PAY FRANCHISE FEES should be able to repair the tech they produce. We will fight for the industry to have proper regulation and for registered repairers to have access to OEM parts* in compliance with what the ongoing Right To Repair Movements (RTRM) has been arguing for years now till the day we shut our doors. *Just like the Automotive industry that has had these standards and practices since the early 80’s and without them no independent auto repair shops would exist. As always we will end with links that help people understand the larger concepts we are advocating:- The first (found after the cleaning video) is the RTRM Wiki that gives an overview of what it is and why it’s important. The second is to the ACCC guidelines for accessing parts and service information in the Automotive industry, which Tech repair has needed comparative legislation to be enacted for over a decade now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzaMBekXE-E https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronics_right_to_repair https://www.accc.gov.au//AAAA%2520Supplementary%2520Submis

04.01.2022 Todays disgruntled customer is related to Video Encoding work and them not listening to the options detailed before having the job performed. When we convert a tape it can be done in one of two ways; The first is as a RAW conversion meaning that whatever condition the footage / sound is on the tape is how it will be as a digital video.... The second is when we run optimization processes over the video as its being captured from the tape and this smooths out video glitches and audio problems but cost more than a RAW conversion. The customer had this explained to them in detail before they brought the tapes they wanted converted to us, said tapes are suffering from rot which happens with all analogue tapes over time. Due to this fact that video footage has splotches in it and the audio is crackly and has distortion pops when loud events happen on the film. We called the customer and told them this was happening and that optimization processes should be run on the footage but once again they refused and demanded it as RAW footage so we complied. Once the work was completed we burnt said video files to disc, the customer came collected them and we thought the job was done. 3x days later (today) and we get an irate call from said customer complaining about the video and sound quality. We literally spent 35 minutes arguing about this on the phone and not once did they accept that they were notified of said issues before hand and they insist we do the entire job again for free and solve the problems. Luckily we record all calls and we could prove that they were contacted previously and denied the request to have these problems solved before job completion. Its amazing how freaked out people get when you play their own voice back to them stating exactly what we said they had. If they want said issues solved now we would need to do the ENTIRE JOB AGAIN as in accordance with privacy laws we cannot keep any customer data after work is completed on it. Thus we would need to either rip the DVD we burnt for them or line in convert the tapes again as we don’t have said footage on hand. Not that any of it matters as the customer refuses to pay for any additional work and was told that we are not a charity and do not do things for free at which point they hung up. We go out of our way to make sure people are informed of their options, we can literally only do what customers request of us and if we tell you something will be a problem before job completion and you choose to ignore said advice that’s on you not us. As with anything tech related we are willing to help but you MUST listen to what we say as professionals within the field and pay our rates. If you aren’t willing to do either of those then don’t contact us as refusal shall offend.

01.01.2022 Another day, another test, still awesome. And that’s with a VPN running on the test PC, a 65’ 4K Tv streaming YouTube videos and a PS4 doing game updates all at the same time. But then it should be as we pay a decent ISP* for CVC allocation, have a fresh lead-in line running straight to our NTD and we aren’t using a low-end $60 supplier provided modem to run our WiFi on.... *eg Aussie Broadband. We also don’t suffer through loss of net access or local phone service when there is a power outage as we have an Unrestricted Power Unit (UPS) attached to a power board before the NTD / Modem which makes said services reliable in emergency’s. Amazing what can be achieved when the past the boundary system is in order and you don’t blame NBN Co for issues with your own onsite infrastructure. It’s also exactly what the majority voted for when they were promised massive savings on the NBN build and if it mattered that much to them they would pay the require cost to solve the problem. No greater point to the post then to illustrate that it’s possible to have consistent internet access running at high speed in the local area counter to what the majority seem to believe. Solutions are there if people are willing to trust the free market and take matters into their own hands. https://www.speedtest.net/result/10734031357

01.01.2022 Today once again we had a customer call us out for a onsite speed test of their internet connection and the issue was on the their end and not a fault of the NBN itself. The two problems where that the customer has signed up to Telstra as their ISP on a 25Mbps plan when they want above said speed and their modem doesn't have good enough WiFi range to reach where they want to use their tablet. When tested on WiFi standing next to the modem in the customers loungeroom we receiv...ed 22Mbps down which is a real-world speed equivalent of their connection. If the same test is performed in their office at the other end of the house 2Mbps down is received. To solve this issue the customer would need to pay for a faster NBN tier of connection (such as 4 running at 100Mbps) which is not offered by Telstra and replace their modem or have a WiFi repeater setup. As with most of our callouts even though we could quantify the problems* the customer has no interest in having any of it solved as they would need to pay for a quality service and onsite tech to support it. *Especially the speed tier one as it's listed on their bill. We charged them for 1 hours onsite support and call-out then left. Yet another case where the customer was convinced the issue was on NBN Cos end but it wasn't. People need to be willing to solve their own issues with passed the boundary onsite infrastructure or the problems will persist. It's almost like the majority have decided they want FTTP, which they voted against and it's to late now.
