25.01.2022 A Colourful Moon: The Moon is normally seen in subtle shades of grey or yellow. But small, measurable colour differences have been greatly exaggerated to make this telescopic, multicoloured, moonscape captured during the Moons full phase. The different colours are recognized to correspond to real differences in the chemical make-up of the lunar surface.

24.01.2022 Wow! What a fantastic picture! This fantastic skyscape lies near the edge of NGC 2174 a star forming region about 6,400 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation of Orion. More details: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

24.01.2022 The Colourful Clouds of Rho Ophiuchi: The many spectacular colours of the Rho Ophiuchi (oh-fee-yu-kee) clouds highlight the many processes that occur there.

22.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - A New York City Sunset. Image Credit & Copyright: Neil deGrasse Tyson. This coming Saturday, if it is clear, well placed New Yorkers can go outside at sunset and watch their city act like a modern version of Stonehenge.

22.01.2022 What has the Curiosity rover come across on Mars? Dubbed Mount Remarkable, the rolling robot has chanced upon this notable 5-meter tall mound during its continuing journey around and, eventually, up 5.5-kilometer high Mt. Sharp. Unsure of the density of the surrounding layered sandstone, the human team on Earth has instructed the car-sized rover on Mars to drill into a rock on the side of Mt. Remarkable to investigate.

21.01.2022 Sunspot Loops in Ultraviolet: It was a quiet day on the Sun. The above image shows, however, that even during off days the Suns surface is a busy place. Shown in ultraviolet light, the relatively cool dark regions have temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius.

21.01.2022 Geminid Meteor Shower over Dashanbao Wetlands The annual Geminid meteor shower is raining down on planet Earth this week. And despite the waxing gibbous moonlight, the reliable Geminids should be enjoyable tonight (night of December 13/14) near the showers peak. Recorded near last years peak in the early hours of December 14, 2012, this skyscape captures many of Geminis lovely shooting stars.

21.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - Titan Seas Reflect Sunlight Why would the surface of Titan light up with a blinding flash? The reason: a sunglint from liquid seas. Saturns moon Titan has numerous smooth lakes of methane that, when the angle is right, reflect sunlight as if they were mirrors.

19.01.2022 Why would a bright full Moon suddenly become dark? Because it entered the shadow of the Earth. Almost two weeks ago this exact event happened as the Moon underwent a total lunar eclipse. That eclipse, visible from the half of the Earth then facing the Moon, was captured in numerous spectacular photographs and is depicted in a time lapse video covering about an hour. The video, recorded from Mt. Lemmon Sky Center in Arizona, USA, keeps the Earth shadow centered and shows the... Moon moving through it from west to east. 19.01.2022 The Bubble Nebula: Blown by the wind from a massive star, this interstellar apparition has a surprisingly familiar shape. Cataloged as NGC 7635, it is also known simply as The Bubble Nebula. Although it looks delicate, the 10 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of violent processes at work.

18.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - Sentinels of the Arctic Todays Astronomy Picture of the Day picture was taken a few winters ago in Finnish Lapland. Surreal landscapes sometimes result, where common trees become cloaked in white and so appear, to some, as watchful aliens. Far in the distance, behind this uncommon Earthly vista, is a more common sight -- a Belt of Venus that divided a darkened from sunlit sky as the Sun rose behind the photographer.

18.01.2022 Large Explosion Seen on the Moon! Watch this video of the large, bright explosion seen on the moon on March 17, 2013. The explosion was caused by a boulder-sized meteoroid impacting the lunar surface. Meteors were also observed in the Earths atmosphere at about the same time, and scientists think the two events are related. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KemsoEwD_Ks

15.01.2022 Spitzers Orion: Few cosmic vistas excite the imagination like the Orion Nebula, an immense stellar nursery some 1,500 light-years away. This stunning false-colour view spans about 40 light-years across the region, constructed using infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope.

13.01.2022 The Seagull Nebula: A broad expanse of glowing gas and dust presents a bird-like visage to astronomers from planet Earth, suggesting its popular moniker - The Seagull Nebula. This portrait of the cosmic bird covers a 1.6 degree wide swath across the plane of the Milky Way, near the direction of Sirius, alpha star of the constellation Canis Major.

12.01.2022 A Green Flash from the Sun! Daniel Lpezs fantastic image shows a green flash from the sun. Just as the setting sun disappears completely from view, a last glimmer appears startlingly green. The effect is typically visible only from locations with a low, distant horizon, and lasts just a few seconds. For more information visit http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

12.01.2022 What would it be like to fall to Earth from really high up? A new record for the highest jump was accomplished in 2012 by Felix Baumgartner. The below video records his four minutes and 19 seconds of free fall in real time. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYw4meRWGd4#t=222

08.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - Camelopardalids and ISS From a camp on the northern shores of the Great Lake Erie, three short bright meteor streaks were captured in this composited night skyscape. Recorded over the early morning hours of May 24, the meteors are elusive Camelopardalids.

07.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - An Unusual Globule in IC 1396 Is there a monster in IC 1396? Known to some as the Elephants Trunk Nebula, parts of gas and dust clouds of this star formation region may appear to take on foreboding forms, some nearly human. What do you think?

06.01.2022 Comet ISON Rising! This time-lapse video shows Comet ISON captured rising over the Canary Islands just above the morning sun a few days ago. If the comets nucleus survives, the coma and the tails it sheds might well be visible rising ahead of the Sun in the next few days or weeks. http://www.youtube.com/watch

05.01.2022 What would it look like to fly past Triton, the largest moon of planet Neptune? Only one spacecraft has ever done this -- the images of this encounter have been gathered into a below movie. Watch it here: http://youtu.be/b7sKqDAEndE

03.01.2022 Whats that approaching? Astronauts on board the International Space Station first saw it in early 2010 far in the distance. The object revealed itself to be the Space Shuttle Endeavour, and it soon docked as expected with the Earth-orbiting space station. Pictured below, Endeavour was imaged near Earths horizon as it approached, where several layers of the Earths atmosphere were visible.
