But small, measurable colour differences have been greatly exaggerated to make this telescopic, multicoloured, moonscape captured during the Moons full phase. Dubbed Mount Remarkable, the rolling robot has chanced upon this notable 5-meter tall mound during its continuing journey around and, eventually, up 5.5-kilometer high Mt. Sharp. Unsure of the density of the surrounding layered sandstone, the human team on Earth has instructed the car-sized rover on Mars to drill into a rock on the side of Mt. Remarkable to investigate.

21.01.2022 Sunspot Loops in Ultraviolet: It was a quiet day on the Sun. The above image shows, however, that even during off days the Suns surface is a busy place. Shown in ultraviolet light, the relatively cool dark regions have temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius.

21.01.2022 Astronomy Picture of the Day - Titan Seas Reflect Sunlight Why would the surface of Titan light up with a blinding flash? The reason: a sunglint from liquid seas. Saturns moon Titan has numerous smooth lakes of methane that, when the angle is right, reflect sunlight as if they were mirrors.

19.01.2022 Why would a bright full Moon suddenly become dark? Because it entered the shadow of the Earth. Almost two weeks ago this exact event happened as the Moon underwent a total lunar eclipse. That eclipse, visible from the half of the Earth then facing the Moon, was captured in numerous spectacular photographs and is depicted in a time lapse video covering about an hour. The video, recorded from Mt. Lemmon Sky Center in Arizona, USA, keeps the Earth shadow centered and shows the... Moon moving through it from west to east. Surreal landscapes sometimes result, where common trees become cloaked in white and so appear, to some, as watchful aliens. Far in the distance, behind this uncommon Earthly vista, is a more common sight -- a Belt of Venus that divided a darkened from sunlit sky as the Sun rose behind the photographer.

03.01.2022 Whats that approaching? Astronauts on board the International Space Station first saw it in early 2010 far in the distance. The object revealed itself to be the Space Shuttle Endeavour, and it soon docked as expected with the Earth-orbiting space station. Pictured below, Endeavour was imaged near Earths horizon as it approached, where several layers of the Earths atmosphere were visible.
