25.01.2022 Little update, well it must be getting closer to be allowed to Open nursery, we have plenty potted fruit trees many with flowers & fruit on already, this summer looks fantastic to plant ( certainly up to xmas) with such good soil moisture, we have a supply of local grown feijoas (seedlings only) plus in winter we sold out of all Dwarf peach, apricot & cherries but expect to have some ready of dwarf peach & dwarf Apricot potted in 2-3 weeks but sorry no cherry, we have a few old varieties on Colt with fruit on them instock, nice clean straw will fill up again in shed before we open too (1st nov aprox)

21.01.2022 Now is Macadamia flower time in Victoria, in 1996 I planted 2 species of macadamia first was the macadamia integrifolia this is the smooth leaf one and Macadamia tetraphylla has the spiky leaves. my Tetraphylla finally had flowers & nuts after just 18 years but this is the very first year we have seen flowers on the Intergrefolia after 24 years, these 2 species have either a white flower or a cream one, thankfully now the trees sold over last 10 years have been the hybrids ...mostly developed in Hawaii such as A4, A268, A16, A2 ( we have planted about 12 hybrids & sold these in nursery last 10 years, these also take on varied shapes from their parents one being a broad canopy shape and one being tall & columnar. Then in Australia there is Pinkalisious, this one has 6 weeks of pink flower racemes (only one in the world) then a smooth round nut in autumn, all of the hybrids can fruit in just 2 years if above Sydney but for us in Vic its about 5 years to flower. Be aware some nurseries still sell seedlings which will normally produce species or genetically diverse ones that take 20+ years to fruit, the hybrids are mostly grafted or are cutting grown clones so you get exactly the one you are after. Being Sub tropical they need great drainage so in clay do a mound, they are an understory trees so don't need huge light to do well but ours doubled in height in one year when the oak protected them fell over, so in Vic hills they can have full sun and handle much more wind than other sub tropical such as Avo with it's no tolerance to any winds. I have used them as a huge wind break to South in a design but we used cheap seedlings first then interspersed the more expensive hybrids. See more

21.01.2022 We are open this Friday 31st July @Monbulk with our bareroot trees, but will close for 2 weeks (so 7&14th Aug) still plenty trees except for cherry, Dwf peach & Dwf apricots now sold out until 2021, we are available Sat by appointment too on 0418 665 880 and Sunday morning @ Eltham Market www.petethepermie.com , scion is still available ( sent late Aug) for grafting as we only begin to graft our apples, pear, nashi, cherry in August, list is on our website in the fruit tree file to download.

19.01.2022 Feijoa trees have been in very short supply lasts 2 years so when a friend had some I could get for the nursery I was happy, these are 90cm tall seedlings that will grow fast in this coming season so Ideal for creating a hedge or a specimen tree, seedlings are a bit varied in how long they take to flower some just 2 years some a little longer, great thing is they have deep green leaves all year and can handle wind, frost, snow and salt winds down the coast to protect trees su...ch as Avo, I like eating the pink sepals as the crimson flower comes out they taste like a really nice sweet lolly and it does not affect the pollination either, fruit are then ready may-july, when not much else is around fresh to eat, one trick is that you DO NOT pick feijoa, you PICK THEM UP, this is when they are perfect ready, so mulch under them with straw so you see easy the green fruit, no need to net as green fruit hides very well from birds too, so use bushes for screening and wind breaks closer in the garden, these can he trimmed to shape with hedge trimmer or just leave them alone , very easy to "not manage". they are PSF partially self fertile so one has fruit but as with most things if multiple round then they do even better. these are $30 ea but grafted ones when we can get them every 3 years maybe are triple this price as very hard to do, we have supplied our friend 5 vars of scion to try grafting for maybe some in 2021 to sell. if doing a hedge then plant mostly seedlings and add just a few grafted ones or you can mix and match with red cherry, yellow cherry or strawberry guava, all with similar foliage but these 3 only grow 1.5mtr tall so trim feijoa to similar size in the hedge. 19.01.2022 Well yes its Avocado tree planting time now ( same time as you would plant tomatoes) or April May is optimum too , but if you go looking for a tree now you wont get them ( until april each year) or if you can find them they are small grafted ones and take 5-6 years to fruit or rouges sell seedlings ( of no use to you for fruit) but could be a good sacrifice tree if you have too much land to waste. Avo trees for Vic must be grafted to Zutano a good cool climate rootstock then ...16 vars have been available at times over last 25 years in Vic, I have found these no worries to grow in as bad as Olinda conditions with 1-5 snows per year as long as you give them protection from the 2 things that will kill then that's 1. very good drainage ( we build a 1 sleeper box mound in all soils to be safe now) and 2. protect from all winds first 2 years so fences, shade cloth, hessian or tree cover will all do this then expect 80-100 fruit of a single tree ( A or B) but once you or 2 neighbour's have both an A & B then expect 250-400 per tree with 5months to pick fresh avo weekly each tree, 2 would cover the year but 3 is excellent and gives overlap for each vars ripening. in April we sell advanced trees ready to flower of Hass (A) Reed (A) Feurte (B) & Bacon (B) See more

17.01.2022 our Nursery will open just 3 more Fridays 10-4pm in December for 2020 so 4th, 11th & 18th with cash only sales we have run out of straw now until early Feb too, we have just received some Dwarf Peaches ( the purple Indian- Blackboy one + Angel the White donut one and Apricot Fireball , plus 2 vars of semi Deciduous Blueberry (rabitteye) these extend the ripening season past the normal Highbush ones we have over winter and handle warmer climates too

17.01.2022 well week 3 of the stage 4 lockdowns, we dont look like being able to open until 13th Sept ( if lockdown ends then) numbers going in right direction, farmers Markets had a scare overnight with "Outdoor farmers markets" deemed non essential after being all Ok since March then by 8.30 pm govt changed their mind and they are Ok again, BUT for us thats the end for our markets until after all this is over, we have sold all our fruit which was how we were able to attend, so we have... to wait until Jan now to return with the plums to sell. we hope to open nursery for last 2 weeks of Sept to sell rest of bareroot trees before we pot whats left in Oct. Meanwhile I have a few hundred grafts to do , plant and tend for now, we have lots of farm work to do if the rain every stops, had our 4th snow for the season so far may pass the 5 snows in a year record here as we typically get one in Oct. Hope you are all safe & sane in these times, we look forward to seeing and having a human real conversation in 3 weeks, meanwhile we are responding to emails Cheers See more

16.01.2022 We have closed the nursery until 2nd Sept, for now we can mail out pheromone strips for codling moth meanwhile, we will look at maybe click & collect for those within 5km of us from Sept 2nd and other options for bareroot trees, we hope to open Sept 18 & 25th plus do Spotswood market on Sept 26 and Eltham market on Oct 3rd for straw & to finalise bare root season. Only cherry, Dw peach & Dw apricots are sold out bareroot and we may get the same ones in pots in spring too, still heaps to choose plums, apple, nashi, Nectarine and others left barerooted.

16.01.2022 Nursery can reopen finally so we will open on Friday 30th Oct 10-4pm and Sunday 1st Nov 11-4pm, cash only sales of potted trees and straw , other times just text peter on 0148 665 880 to book a personal time (but PDC starts soon so tues & thurs will be out then)

12.01.2022 with Level 3 restrictions we are still able to open our Nursery (selling our BD cert fruit, Vinegar plus our fruit trees) we will open on Friday 24th july and 31st at this stage, Even if they move to stage 4 in Vic we should be able to go to Markets 25th July @ Spotswood and 2nd Aug at Eltham farmers market, bare root trees have not sold out due to lockdown so still plenty for sale until late Sept as we normally do. Virus free clean scion is now available for grafting, we cut fresh and mail out this season. list is on fruit tree file on my website. www.petethepermie.com see our new facebook page Telopea Mtn Permaculture & Nursery

11.01.2022 well as the covid year draw to an end we will open 3 more Fridays Dec 4, 11 & 18th, we have some additional dwarf potted Peach & Apricots to sell ( not many though, peach- angel & blackboy/ Indian from NZ) , this does well in cool areas too with nice purple fruit inside, plus, Blueberries- Blueberry Burst & Pink Kisses these are the semi deciduous ones ( rabbit eyes) they ripen after the usual Highbush we sell in winter adding to the fresh pick ripening now we can span Nov to May, they can handle hotter weather too and grow as far up as Coffs.

09.01.2022 Feeling like a kid waiting for Santa Claus at Xmas , if only I can be good for the rest of the week "BIG DAN" might give me the present of business viability and we could reopen the nursery and even begin our 2 full PDC classes too, we are about to run out of straw but I have a new truck full come from Steve our farmer late Oct so should be full for all that mulching and compost making this late spring / summer, we have some extra potted trees to collect as we ran out of apricots and peach in winter, so should have at least some of almost all species in pots available, it will be good to plant past Xmas this season from pots as LA Nina will continue to supply great soil moisture., plenty dwarf plums, apples and more are ready to plant many with flowers on them.

03.01.2022 market was bit quiet compared Saturday to June due to people being worried in the west of Melbourne probably, we are open this Friday in Monbulk 10-4 then closed two Fridays, Sunday at Eltham Market, we are also taking appointments Mon to Sat this week for people to come to buy trees, just call Peter on 0418 665 880 cash is preferred with most of range still available (Dwf apricots, cherry, kiwi & dwarf Peaches now sold out) would need to wait for potted ones in spring for those but most others there is still a good selection in bareroot available.
