17.01.2022 As a lead up to Templin Museum's Retro fabric Sale day on 22 November 2020, we will be post some fun sewing facts over the next few posts. Hope you all enjoy and be inspired!! This manual table model sewing machine with wooden carry case was made by Frister and Rossmann, Germany. Given to Rose House [1906-1968] in England, the sewing machine was amongst the personal possessions Mrs House brought to Australia when she migrated here with her family in 1950. After a brief stay a...t the Dundas Migrant Hostel, the family made their way to Kendall and finally settled at Port Macquarie. Mrs House used the sewing machine to make garments for her three daughters as well as hemming sheets and curtains and mending tasks. The first practical sewing machine was invented by Isaac Merrit Singer in 1850 and revolutionised household labour. It enabled tedious hand sewing to be completed relatively quickly and the sewing machine enabled enterprising middle class women, who could afford to purchase their own machine to take in sewing to earn extra money. This sewing machine dates to a time when women owned and used sewing machines frequently. Home dress making was a skill common to women engaged in home duties and during the 1950s household budgets still did not extend to the purchase of expensive store bought clothing, particularly for children. Frister and Rossmann produced a large number of sewing machines from 1864, winning medals at various international exhibitions during the 1880s. It was Germany’s largest sewing machine manufacturer until 1902 and in 1903 the company produced their one- millionth machine. The company exported their sewing machines to England from around 1870 with their machines sold through agents and at leading drapers and stores including Harrods and in this case W. Pierssene of London. The machines were also sold in Australia with Anthony Hordern & Sons Department Store the sole agent. Sewing machines made by Frister and Rossmann were quite decorative, this one features silver and gold oak leaf decals and its wooden carry case a decorative inlay although its original brass handle is missing. A large number of Frister and Rossmann sewing machines were made and many of them were used throughout the United Kingdom and Australia. This one made its way to Australia with Rose House, a British immigrant who used it to cloth her family and make soft furnishings for her new home at Port Macquarie. ‘ Next to the plough, the sewing machine is perhaps humanity’s most blessed instrument..’ Louis Antoine Godey, 1856 Anne Oud 27 January 2015 Photograph and Information Courtesy of Port Macquarie Historical Society. 11.01.2022 Apart from our Virtual Museum Project, we have also been working hard on improving our colourisation process. We shared this popular post about the Titcomb family of Cannon Creek a couple of weeks ago. At the time we were only able to share the original Black and White photograph. However, we are pleased to now include a colourised version of it, using our new enhanced colourisation methodology. What the new method means is that not only do we get vivid realistic colours, but also very clear images, including clearer facial features! 08.01.2022 From the 1940s and for decades after, the milk bars and cafes often run by Greek immigrant families, provided a taste of exciting food and a glamorous retreat f...rom ordinary life. They had names like the Paragon, the Niagara, the Astoria and the California cafe and they graced the main streets of cities and country towns around Australia with their iconic art deco style interiors and their offer of 'exotic' American style meals. Effy Alexakis and Leonard Janiszewski spent 30 years researching their book, "Greek Cafes & Milk Bars of Australia", Some served neither American or Greek food but typical Australian fare of the time - steak and eggs; mixed grill and chips with lettuce, tomato and beetroot, tinned spaghetti on toast, sliced white bread and butter, tea and milkshakes.
